Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 356 PM CST Sun Feb 20 2022)

Tonight through Tuesday:

A cold front will drop southward through the forecast tonight.
Temps will be colder in the north overnight where the colder
airmass will arrive sooner. The colder airmass behind the departed
cold front will largely remain in place through early this week.
Meanwhile, temps aloft will increase during this period as an 850
mb low tracks across the forecast area and a 700 mb low tracks to
the north. With the associated surface low still expected to move
by the south, it is still looking like a period of wintry mix from
later Monday through Tuesday. This includes an extended period of
freezing rain and sleet, with the bulk of snow still expected to
pass by to the north. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued as
a result, with travel impacts likely from this system.

A few thoughts and concerns about this system. Models have come
into better agreement with the track of the surface low, leading
to higher confidence in the wintry mix across southern Wisconsin.
There is also higher confidence in the precip starting out as rain
in the southeast, thus the advisory starts later there than it
does for the rest of the area. There still remains uncertainty
with freezing rain vs sleet. Model soundings do show differences
with the strength of the warm layer and depth of the low level
sub-freezing layer. Changes to the temperature profile through
these layers could lead to variations in ice vs sleet amounts.
Also still seeing a decent spread in total precip amounts among
models, which will obviously impact how much freezing rain and
sleet ends up falling across southern Wisconsin.

Overall though, confidence is high for a wintry mix for much of
the forecast area. This may impact the Monday and Tuesday evening
commutes, with a good chance of impacting the Monday morning
commute.

Wednesday through Sunday:

Quiet weather and below normal temps are expected Wednesday under
the influence of high pressure to the west. Attention then turns
to the next low pressure system progged to move by well to the
south Thursday into Thursday night. Much of the forcing and deeper
moisture from the surface low will remain south tied closer to
the low. There is increasing confidence that southern Wisconsin
will see a shot of snow as the upper trough swings through though.
Models are still varying with potential amounts, but overall
looks like some accumulations will be possible if models continue
down this path. Might see some lake effect/enhancement as well
with east/northeast winds likely as the low passes by to the
south.

Quiet weather is likely to return for Friday and Saturday as high
pressure moves back into the region. A shortwave and cold front
may then push through on Sunday and possibly bring a little light
snow to the area. Kept the forecast dry for now given lower
confidence in this system. Below normal temps are expected to
continue through the weekend.

Gusty winds will continue to wind down this evening into tonight.
VFR conditions will persist into this evening. Lower clouds will
then likely develop behind a cold front overnight, persisting
through Monday as low level moisture increases ahead of an
approaching low. It looks mainly dry through Monday morning, with
increasing chances for a wintry mix of precipitation Monday
afternoon into Monday evening. The precip will likely be
drizzle/freezing drizzle at the most Monday afternoon, with the
widespread wintry mix likely to move in by evening.

Low pressure near the Ontario/Quebec border this afternoon will
continue to pull away to the east, allowing winds to ease into
this evening. A trailing cold front will drop south across the

A Small Craft Advisory may be needed tonight through Tuesday as
a result.

Tuesday, which will likely include freezing rain, sleet, and some
snow. This will likely impact travel through this period, thus a
Winter Weather Advisory has been issued.

Light snow accumulations are possible later Thursday into early
Friday as low pressure moves through the region.
