Unseasonably warm weather will continue across central and southeast
Illinois for the next couple of days as high temperatures soar
well into the 70s. Winds will be on the increase as well...with
southerly gusts reaching 20 to 30 mph today, then 30 to 35 mph on
Friday.

High pressure ridging aloft and warm southerly flow remain
dominant over central IL, providing mostly sunny skies and warm
breezy conditions. Highs still look to reach the mid 70s at most
locations, and winds should gust as high as 30 mph west of I-55,
but generally only 20-25 mph to the east, with the least wind
south of I-70. Have nudged winds up slightly for the rest of today
given some gusts already over 20 mph and sustained winds
registering around 15 mph, along with model consensus suggesting
slightly higher.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

As the pressure gradient tightens between a departing high and an
approaching cold front, southerly winds will increase to 10-20mph
with gusts reaching 20-25mph today. Thanks to ample sunshine and
strong WAA, high temperatures will climb into the middle 70s. As
southerly winds persist and mid/high cloud cover increases from
the west, lows tonight will be considerably warmer than they have
been in recent nights...ranging from the middle 50s near the
Indiana border to the lower 60s in the Illinois River Valley.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)
ISSUED AT 311 AM CDT Thu Nov 3 2022

Cold front across the Plains will hit the brakes as it encounters
a prominent upper ridge extending from the Gulf Coast to the
eastern Great Lakes...stalling from Wisconsin southwestward to
near Kansas City on Friday. While most of the showers associated
with the front will remain W/NW of the KILX CWA, will carry high
chance to likely PoPs along/northwest of a Rushville to Minonk
line...with only slight chances as far southeast as I-55. Main
story on Friday will be the strong southerly winds, which will
gust as high as 30-35mph during the afternoon. High temperatures
will be held in the lower 70s across the far N/NW CWA where clouds
and showers will be most prevalent, but will soar into the middle
to upper 70s elsewhere.

Vigorous short-wave trough noted on 07z/2am water vapor imagery
digging southward across Nevada/California will be the primary
weather-maker across central Illinois Friday night into Saturday.
As has been noted by the past several model runs, this feature
will drop into the 4-corners region today...then will lift
northeastward into the Great Lakes by Saturday. The exact speed of
this process has previously been in question: however, excellent
model consensus now suggests it will track W/NW of central
Illinois late Friday night. While models still do not indicate
much instability within the pre-frontal airmass, the 00z Nov 3 GFS
does show MUCAPEs of about 100-200J/kg. In addition, a powerful
low-level jet streak developing in advance of the wave will
contribute to 50-60kt of 0-6km bulk shear. The end result will be
one or more lines of convection forming ahead of the approaching
cold front and sweeping across central Illinois late Friday night
into early Saturday morning. While widespread severe weather is
not likely, there will be more than enough wind energy in the
environment to support the risk for scattered damaging wind gusts
with the showers/storms. Later shifts may need to issue a Wind
Advisory from about midnight Friday night to midday Saturday as
wind gusts potentially reach 45-50mph. Latest model consensus
brings the convection into areas west of I-55 before
midnight...then pushes it to the Indiana border shortly after dawn
Saturday. While this main band of convection will rapidly depart,
additional showers will still be possible as the actual cold
front passes. After that, any lingering showers will quickly end
from west to east by early afternoon. Strong southwesterly winds
will linger through the remainder of the day before dropping
considerably by evening.

Despite cold FROPA, temperatures will remain quite warm as a
zonal flow pattern develops across the CONUS early next week.
Highs will reach the middle to upper 60s on Sunday. After that,
another western CONUS trough will create downstream ridging over
the Midwest/Ohio River Valley which will likely push readings
back into the 70s by next Wednesday.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)

Scattered showers and some isolated thunderstorms will be possible
after 12Z from KSPI-KBMI westward after 12Z. TAFs do not have vcts
or tsra mentioned at this point due to isolated/low probability.
Additionally, strong winds aloft at the 2000 ft level will lead to
low level wind shear overnight, from around 03Z-16Z. Otherwise,
generally VFR conditions are expected through the forecast period,
with cloud heights lowering overnight, and perhaps some very isolated
MVFR with any thunderstorms after 12Z. Surface winds S 12-18 kts
with gusts 20-26 kts through tonight, increasing to 15-20 kts with
gusts 25-30 kts after 16Z.

Gusty winds are expected across much of central Illinois Friday
night into Saturday. Southwest wind gusts are expected to peak in
the 40 to 50 mph range.

Heavy rain and a few thunderstorms are expected Friday into Saturday
morning as a storm system moves across the region. Areas west of the
Illinois River could see up to around 0.75 inches of rain. Severe
thunderstorms are not expected at this time, but with widespread
strong gusty winds Friday night and Saturday, any storms could
produce wind gusts approaching severe thresholds.
