KEY MESSAGES:
1. A busy upcoming three days is expected across the region.

THIS MORNING: Narrow corridor of light rain or sprinkles continues
to move east. Moisture continues to be an issue this morning and
likely contributing to the meager development so far this
morning. That said, there is a thin layer of instability over
portions of SW Minnesota and northern Iowa, so can't rule out an
isolated lightning strike through daybreak. Further west, we've
seen some healthy wind gusts at times, with near advisory winds in
a few locations.
TODAY: As low-lvl winds begin to veer this morning and surface low
pressure move into northeastern SD, we should begin to see a bit
more enhancement of gusts in the Buffalo Ridge areas, with weakening
winds further west. That aforementioned sfc low will push a frontal
boundary east through the CWA by mid-day. Models are in good
agreement that a secondary area of light rain will develop over
central SD and move eastward into Minnesota by early afternoon.
This precip will be tied to a stronger vorticity maxima extending
across Montana this morning. Again, a slight corridor of elevated
instability ahead of this wave, could lead to isolated lightning
along and east of I-29 by mid-day. We'll then watch a deeply mixed
boundary layer advect eastward off the High Plains. Surface obs
already showing sharp drying across eastern Wyoming as downsloping
begins. The western half of the CWA will be the most susceptible
to deep mixing AOA 650 mb. This will push dew points much lower
and bring strong gusts downward. Have issued a wind advisory
through portions of the Missouri and James River valleys. The fire
danger risks will be covered in the fire weather section of this
discussion.
TONIGHT: Overnight, we'll begin to see the upper lvl low really
begin to deepen over the Western Great Lakes. The increasing surface
pressure gradient will keep a persistent strong sustained wind in
the area, however we should begin to see renewed strong wind gusts
arrive by mid-night as a channel of enhanced 850 mb winds
approaching 60 knots develops through central and western SD. It's
possible that current wind advisory may need to be extended through
the overnight hours. As another lobe of vorticity drops southward,
scattered rain/snow showers could move into the CWA overnight, the
combo of wind and snow potential could lead to tricky travel into
Wednesday morning.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

WEDNESDAY: The morning hours will likely see a mixture of
rain/snow showers throughout the area with the continuation of
strong gradient winds and near advisory gusts. Some snow
accumulation (1-2 inches) may be possible along and north of a
Huron to Madison to Worthington line, though most accumulations
elsewhere should remain light and melt with ground contact. Wind
concerns begin to grow by mid- day as models are showing a channel
of dry air AOA 5K ft AGL rotate around the backside of the upper
low. While we may dry out precipitation by mid-day, this opens the
area up to greater chances to transport strong gusts down to the
SFC in the afternoon. Soundings west of I-29 show potential for 50
knot gusts by early afternoon, with the depth of mixing
suggesting potential for 55+ gusts in the James River valley by
late afternoon. As a result, will issue a high wind watch, with a
high likelihood of wind advisory headlines needed further east as
well.
THURSDAY: Strong gradient winds and persistent high wind gusts may
only temporarily subside Wednesday night. Populated NBM guidance
continues to be too low, and have adjusted much higher towards the
experimental NBM and raw max gust guidance. A cold, raw, extremely
windy day is expected for Thursday. There will likely be several
bands of light snow moving through the region by daybreak, and
this could lead to some travel difficulty over eastern South
Dakota and western Minnesota. Soundings again show high potential
for at least advisory level winds through the day, with some
potential for warning level winds at times in the afternoon. This
falls in line with ensemble guidance which shows an increased
potential for 40-50+ knot gusts. Soundings also indicate an
increased potential for convective snow showers westward towards
central South Dakota by the afternoon, and these could lead to
some messy travel at times, especially north of I-90.
FRIDAY-MONDAY: The upper low migrates eastward on Friday, with winds
slowly decreasing from west to east in the morning. Temperatures
warm back into the 50s in most locations. By Saturday, mid-lvl
ridging increasing with lee side troughing already allowing
stronger southwesterly winds to develop. It's likely that Saturday
afternoon will feature very high to extreme fire danger potential
across the Plains again as winds crank back up. A dry front moves
through the area by Sunday, but won't cool off temperatures all
that much. With troughing likely to develop over the western CONUS
by early next week, this could spell a more active period of
weather next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

Periodic rain showers will continue through the period. Snow may
mix in overnight into early Wednesday, along and north of I-90.
Could see some light accumulations. This rain and snow reduces
both visibility and ceilings to MVFR or lower. MVFR stratus
expected to prevail Wednesday morning into early afternoon.
The other focus for TAFs remains the strong winds. Cold front
swings through this afternoon and evening, with winds quickly
shifting from southerly ahead of the front to westerly immediately
behind the front, becoming northwesterly. For most of the area
(the exception being overnight in northwestern IA), expect
sustained winds over 20 knots with gusts 35 to 40 knots. The
strongest winds are expected toward the end of the period. Brief
LLWS is possible across portions of northwestern IA this evening
into tonight as the low level jet increases; however, not
expecting this to impact KSUX.

.FIRE WEATHER...

TODAY: Biggest concerns today revolve on just how quickly the
deeply mixed airmass moving off the western Plains can slide
eastward. High resolution guidance is a little bit slower this
morning pushing this air eastward. Any rain that falls this
morning may not limit fire danger given the 1-hr fuels won't take
long to dry out. There is also some potential that temperatures
may struggle to warm with the delay in arrival of dry air, and
increased potential for CU to develop. This could lead to higher
RH in the current RFW areas. That said, strong winds should negate
the increased RH potential and still lead to extreme danger.
Given the slower and shortened duration of dry air advecting
eastward, will hold off on any expansion of the current RFW but
monitoring observations will be critical today.
WEDNESDAY: Some light precipitation and cooler temps moving in
Wednesday morning may lower fire danger risks slightly. However, I
do have some concerns that we'll see very strong gradient winds and
some high end gusts. If mixing is deeper than expected and we can
tap into a dry layer aloft, then dew points and RH could drop
further than forecast.
