What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Eureka, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale warning went out at Sep 6, 4:53 AM PDT, 10 hours 24 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Sep 6, 4:53 AM PDT, 10 hours 24 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
453 AM PDT Tue Sep 6 2022

.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will peak today across the interior with
highs of 105 to 115. Much cooler temperatures and some late night
and morning low clouds and fog will still be found along the
coast. Temperatures across the interior will slowly cool through
the remainder of the week, followed by a more robust cooling trend
starting this weekend. There is a chance for thunderstorms for
the interior on Wednesday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Today will be the peak of the heatwave as high
pressure remains parked over the Great Basin. 850 mb temperatures
are expected to exceed 31-32C over the interior, fully supporting
record high temperatures and potentially all-time record high
temperatures for some areas. The forecast for today calls for 115F
at Ukiah, which would tie the all-time record set back on September
3rd, 1955. Needless to say, excessive heat warnings are in effect
for nearly the entire interior today and everyone should be
extremely careful in this heat. Coastal areas will also be warm
today with little fog seen on satellite this morning. However, the
sea breeze should kick in keeping temperatures in the 70s for highs.

Increasing moisture and cloud cover tomorrow will likely result in a
a drop in temperatures by a few degrees. A weak system aloft may
have just enough moisture to support elevated thunderstorms as early
as Wednesday morning across interior areas, and possibly even at the
coast. Steep low level lapse rates could bring a threat of gusty
winds if storms develop. Storm chances will continue into Wednesday
evening.

The heat will persist through the end of the work week with highs
still above 100 degrees for many interior areas. Though excessive
heat warning criteria may end after today for most areas, heat
advisories may need to continue for several days. By the weekend
additional moisture spilling into the region from the south will
again bring the potential for more cloud cover. In addition, a
shortwave trough will lower heights and temperatures will cool back
to more typical temperatures for this time of year by early next
week. The tropical moisture may also bring another shot for
showers or storms over the weekend. /RPA

&&

.AVIATION...Marine stratus is expected to linger off the North Coast
until about mid morning. Until then, there could be pushes of
stratus into coastal terminals causing MVFR or maybe IFR conditions.
But, for the most part, marine stratus will be just off the coast
leaving ACV and CEC at MVFR/VFR conditions. Any marine stratus is
expected to burn off by mid to late morning or into the early
afternoon. VFR conditions will prevail at UKI throughout the TAF
period. /JLW

&&

.MARINE...Northerly winds will diminish throughout the coastal waters
of the North Coast as a low pressure system way to our north helps
disrupt the steep pressure gradient along the coast throughout today.
However, once that low pressure system moves inland at British
Columbia, the Pacific High will again push east and create an even
steeper pressure gradient along the North Coast bringing even
stronger northerly winds to the coastal waters by early Wednesday.
From Wednesday through early Friday morning, gale force gusts are
expected in the northern outer waters, with localized strong gale
gusts on Thursday afternoon and evening. Gale force gusts are also
expected to spread to the southern outer waters on Thursday, so a
gale watch/warning may need to be extended to this area as well.

Steep and elevated seas along with small mid period northwest swell
and long period southerly swell are expected through the end of the
work week. Late Wednesday night through very early Friday morning,
steep and especially elevated seas are expected with peak seas late
Thursday night at 16 to 17 feet in the northern outer waters and 14
to 16 feet in the southern outer waters. By late this weekend, a low
pressure system moving out to sea to the north of our CWA will
diminish the northerly winds significantly and may help end the hold
that the Pacific High has on our coastal waters. /JLW

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...The peak of the heatwave will occur today with all-
time record high temperatures possible in some interior areas. Some
gusty onshore winds will be possible as the sea breeze pushes inland
this afternoon. Temperatures will gradually decrease over the next
several days but remain well above normal through the end of the
week. In addition to the heat, a quickly passing system on Wednesday
may have just enough moisture to trigger isolated storms across the
region. Steep low level lapse rates would support strong wind gusts
if storms develop. There is still significant uncertainty as to
whether storms form at all and where the greatest threat could
occur. For now, slight chances have been included in interior Del
Norte, interior Humboldt, Trinity, and northeastern Mendocino
counties beginning Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.

Last, as a weak system moves inland into the Pacific Northwest on
Thursday, north-easterly winds will increase over the ridge tops
of northern Del Norte County into southwestern Oregon. With the
heat still in place, this will result in an enhanced fire weather
threat Thursday into Friday morning as relative humidity values
could drop down into the teens or single digits while the winds
increase to between 15 and 25 mph. At this time the threat looks
too be very isolated to only areas primarily north of Highway 199,
but this will be looked at closely the next couple of days. A
headline will be included in the FWF to mention this potential.
