.SYNOPSIS...Dry conditions and above normal temperatures are
expected through Wednesday. Some interior valleys will reach into
the upper 90s and possibly near 100 degrees in southern Mendocino
or Lake counties on Wednesday. Cooler temperatures return Thursday
into the weekend along with a chance of rain mostly north of Cape
Mendocino.

.DISCUSSION...Dry conditions will remain in place through midweek as
an upper level ridge builds over the west coast. High pressure
building over the coastal waters will tighten the pressure gradient
over California as troughing persists over the Great Basin into
Tuesday. This will result in gusty north winds along the coast and
some offshore flow across the southern reaches of the county warning
area in Lake and Mendocino counties. The tightest pressure gradient
will likely occur on Tuesday as the ridge builds with particularly
dry conditions in Lake County. This will result in fire weather
concerns which are detailed more in the fire weather discussion
below. Otherwise the main impact will be much above normal
temperatures with 80s and 90s across the interior and possibly a
couple locations touching 100 degrees in the far southern areas of
Mendocino and into Lake counties.
The ridge will break down Thursday into Friday bringing much cooler
temperatures and a return of rain chances, primarily for areas
north of Cape Mendocino into the interior mountains. Total
rainfall isn't expected to be substantial but may be enough to
get the ground wet once again north of the Cape. Besides the
rainfall forecast, the other challenge is just how much
temperatures fall from Wednesday to Thursday. The good old MEX
guidance was showing a nearly 20 degree drop from the upper 90s to
the upper 70s, but has since backed off to only a 13 degree drop
to the lower 80s. The more reliable NBM is much more reasonable
with around a 10 degree decline followed by another 10 degrees on
Friday. However it plays out, temperatures are likely falling back
to either normal or slightly below normal for the late week
period into the weekend. /RPA

.AVIATION...Afternoon visible satellite showed a thinning coastal
stratus segment from CEC to ACV. A hybrid spring/summer pattern is
developing with overnight back-filling stratus sent on a poorly
modeled journey north along the coast in light southerly return flow
eddies. Expecting more of the same overnight with hints of pockets
of lower VIS and maybe fog in some valleys and in the mix over the
ocean. Best confidence is for mostly MVFR CIGS around 1000 ft MSL to
start, with chances for lowering as the morning progresses. JJW

.MARINE...Small Craft Advisory winds and seas persist this
afternoon. An isolated swath of stronger wind gusts near 35 kts can
be expected south of Cape Mendocino through this evening. Winds will
begin to temporarily ease overnight before the northerlies
strengthen to gale force Monday afternoon and evening. Gale Watches
have been hoisted for the outer zones. High pressure over the NERN
PAC is then expected to weaken Wednesday into Thursday which will
aid in a substantial decrease in wind speeds. JJW

.FIRE WEATHER...A very warm air mass will build over Northwest
California early this week, with north-easterly flow developing as
the pressure gradient tightens between high pressure over the
Pacific and low pressure in the Great Basin. Though winds are
not expected to be particularly strong, they will still become a
bit gusty on the ridge tops of Lake and Mendocino counties,
particularly Tuesday morning. The offshore flow will bring low RH
to southern Lake County where single digit RH will be possible
Tuesday afternoon. With fuel moistures beginning to fall once
again the threat of fire is increasing but once again, the fuels
aren't to critical levels at this time. So, for now, maintaining
just a headline in the fire weather forecast and no need for
watches or warnings. However, unless more rain is seen in Lake
County and southern Mendocino, it might not be long until fuels
are to critical levels.
Conditions will rapidly change Thursday with temperatures cooling
sharply as a trough moves into the area. Light rain may return
north of Cape Mendocino late in the week. /RPA
