AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
419 AM PDT Wed May 18 2022
.SYNOPSIS...Breezy conditions will continue through the end of the
work week. Temperatures will continue to warm across the interior
today, while seasonal temperatures continue along the coast. After
a slight inland cool down tomorrow, warmer temperatures are
expected to return by the weekend.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Morning low clouds along the coast will continue to
give way to increasing mid to high clouds across a good portion of
the area today, while breezy conditions persist. Temperatures
will warm into the upper 80s to low 90s in the warmer interior
valleys, while coastal areas generally remain in the 60s. An
upper-level trough and associated cold front will move into the
Pacific Northwest later today and into tonight. Most hi-res
guidance and the NBM continue to keep the forecast area dry, but
some very light rain cannot be ruled out in Del Norte County and
along the North Coast later today. Troughing will continue to
shift to the south and east tomorrow and into Friday, while
ridging builds over the Northeast Pacific. A tightening pressure
gradient between these two features will lead to some brisk
northerly winds tomorrow and particularly on Friday. Drier air
will filter into the region the latter portion of the week and the
combination of the brisk northerlies and lower humidities will
lead to elevated fire weather concerns in portions of Lake County.
Please see the fire weather section below for more details. Some
patchy frost will be possible tomorrow night, but drier air and
breezy winds may help to mitigate the overall threat. Clusters
depict ridging over the Northeast Pacific persisting into next
week, resulting in warmer and dry weather likely prevailing into
early next week.
&&
.AVIATION...Low clouds have developed across the interior
Humboldt and along the Eel River Delta this morning. After a period
of MVFR ceilings at KACV, light offshore wind flow promoted VFR
conditions. However, an approaching cold front will bring increasing
cloudiness across Northern California. VFR to MVFR conditions is
expected at KCEC by mid to late morning as result, this will bring
some drizzles over Del Norte County. HREF model guidance indicates
marine stratus developing along the Redwood coast. MVFR/IFR
conditions will be possible at the coastal terminal through early
Thursday morning, before strongest wind develops and help to mix the
marine layer allowing clearing skies. Meanwhile, prevailing VFR
conditions is expected at KUKI. Lighter northerly winds up to around
10 kts is expected along the coastal terminals today, while breezy
northerly winds with occasional gust up to around 25 kts is
expected at KUKI this afternoon through evening. Also, strong
winds aloft will generate LLWS at UKI this afternoon through
tonight.
&&
.MARINE...Northerly winds slowly weaken across the waters through
this afternoon as a frontal system approaches. This will be followed
by increasing northerly winds, with the strongest winds S of Cape
Mendocino after the passage of the aforementioned cold front into
the Pacific NW. Winds will continue strengthening toward the weekend
as a high pressure over the NEPAC and a thermal trough near the
coast will favor a moderately strong pressure gradient. Gale force
gust winds up to 40 kts and steep to very steep, hazardous seas of 8
to 15 foot are expected across the waters on Thursday through
Saturday. For this reason, a Gale Watch is now in place for all
coastal waters from Thursday afternoon through Saturday. In
addition, a new long-period southerly swell will move across the
waters Friday through the weekend.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Dry air and brisk northerlies will lead to an
increased fire weather threat across the southern interior late in
the work week, particular in eastern and southern Lake County. Gusts
up to 35 mph will be possible tomorrow and Friday, while humidities
dip into the lower teens. However, fuel moisture remains near to
slightly above normal for this time of year in that area. Have
continued to headline the threat. /SEC&JAW
