.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

A large trough is setting up in the western parts of the nation
which will be the setup for the upcoming winter storm for the
middle portions of this week. A cold front is currently moving
through and we should see breezy northeast winds across the region
today ushing in the first round of cold air advection. A surface
low will continue to move into central Oklahoma and intensify as a
700 mb shortwave goes into south central Kansas this afternoon.
This wave should provide lift along the cold front draped from
central Oklahoma into south central Kansas. As a result we could
see some light rain showers develop in our far southeast counties
close to sunset.  Highs should reach into the 40s.

Tonight arctic air will sweep across the area quickly dropping us
below freezing. This quick temperature change should ensure that
any liquid precipitation should change quickly to snow with no
real mix phased change of sleet or freezing rain. Isentropic lift
will start to increase after midnight and we should see the
dendritic growth zone quickly saturate that mesoscale band of snow
will develop and expand across southwest Kansas during the night.
We should see a quick 1 to 2 inches of snow by morning with
heavier bands coming into play by sunrise. Winds at this point
should be in the 15-30 mph range and with the light fluffy snow
visibilities will also quickly reduce with blowing snow. Models
and NBM guidance are all suggesting snow ratios at 15-17/1 so it
should be a drier snow event which will lead to easy drifting.
Lows will fall into the single digits and teens.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)

Cold advection continues across the forecast area into Tuesday night.
The Pacific Northwest wave will continue to dig southeast into the
Four Corners region by Tuesday evening carving out a deep long wave
trough over central North America Tuesday night. This will set the
stage for even colder air spreading into the central High Plains
Tuesday night and Wednesday. In addition, low/mid level forcing will
increase across the area in advance of the Four Corners shortwave.
Light snow will develop Tuesday night. A light rain/snow mix is
expected over the south central KS counties before colder air changes
the precipitation over to all snow. The snow is expected to continue
into Wednesday before gradually tapering off Wednesday night into
Thursday morning.

The models show a broad area of isentropic upglide developing late
Tuesday into Tuesday night with the atmosphere saturating up through
the 600-500 millibar layer by late evening. Expect snow to begin
in earnest by then and continue through Wednesday morning. By Wednesday
afternoon, wind vectors become more parallel to the pressure gradient,
suggesting decreasing upward vertical motion through the dendritic
growth layer. However, we should continue to see light snow into
Wednesday night into Thursday as the main shortwave ejects out
across the southern/central Plains.

Total snowfall amounts have been increased today with a fairly widespread
area of 5-7 inches across the forecast area. Think this is reasonable
given forecast QPF amounts and the potential for at least a 15:1
liquid to snow ratios. Central Kansas counties along I-70 should
see the least amounts with 3-5" expected there. A winter storm
watch is currently in effect for all of the area except for Trego
and Ellis counties and this looks good for now.

In addition to the snow, much colder air is still on tap to spread
down into the forecast area on Wednesday into Thursday. Strong
northeast winds combined with temperatures falling into the
single digits (above and below zero) both Wednesday and Thursday
night will bring dangerously cold wind chills at -15 degrees F or
colder to the area which will likely require wind chill advisories
to be put in place.

By Friday into the weekend, we should see quieter weather
returning to the area. Temperatures will be slow to warm given the
expected snow cover.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night)

A cold front will move through western Kansas from 06Z through 09Z
shifting the winds to the north to northeast and increasing to
15-25 kts. Through the day on Tuesday winds should continue in
this range and with increasing clouds we will see the skies become
cloudy. We should stay in VFR flight conditions through most of
the period. By the evening between 04-06Z we will see light snow
develop across western Kansas and cloud ceilings falling to
MVFR/IFR range. Visibility with snow should initially stay 3 SM or
greater but this will quickly decrease after 06Z and that will be
described more in the next aviation update.
