.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will bring dry and milder weather today. A storm
system passing to our northwest will bring a period of rain and
strong winds tonight and Saturday. Colder conditions will
return for the end of the weekend with some minor lake effect
snow east of the lakes.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Northern periphery of a high pressure system centered over the Mid
Atlantic will provide dry weather today, while supporting warm
advection in a developing southerly return flow. This will send
temperatures into the mid 40s to around 50 at most locations,
except the eastern Lake Ontario region where readings will top
out in the lower 40s. The return flow will also bring in mid
level clouds through the day.

Tonight, a deepening surface low will track from Lake Superior to
northern Quebec. A strong, deep jet will develop in the vicinity of
a developing thermal gradient over the plains, which will then
extend into the Great Lakes, characterized by 850 mb winds of 55-65
knots. An area of rain will develop rather quickly from west
to east as the nose of the jet reaches the area by mid to late
evening. Rainfall amounts do not look very impressive and will
likely be under a quarter inch. The main weather impact with
the extension of the jet over western New York will be
increasingly windy conditions. Southwest flow advecting warm
air aloft will reinforce a low-level inversion which will limit
mixing depths and thus surface gust potential. Latest profiles
supports mixing depths to no more 1.5 kft which would hold gusts
below 40 mph for the most part. The exception would be for
areas of Chautauqua and Southern Erie counties along the Lake
Erie shoreline and perhaps the Black River Valley east of Lake
Ontario, where favorable downslope flow could enhance gust
potential.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
A strong cold front tied to a surface low just east of James Bay
will cross the lower Great Lakes from west to east Saturday. While
this will bring widespread rain to the region as it passes through,
main focus for this event will be on the strong wind potential just
behind the front. Strong post-frontal 850H winds of about 55-60kts
should be able to mix downward with rapid cold air advection in the
wake of the front. With a concurrent wind shift from SSW to W,
surface wind gusts potentially up to 60mph will be possible across
portions of Western NY by mid-morning Saturday, spreading eastward
across Lake Ontario and into Lewis County by late morning. This
window for strong wind gusts looks to be rather brief, perhaps only
lasting an hour or two at any given location as the front marches
eastward. In addition, model guidance (with the exception of the
GFS) has backed off the strong wind potential a bit, with model
soundings indicating slightly weaker boundary layer mixing
along/just behind the front. That being said, will continue to
maintain the High Wind Watch for Saturday with this update.

Outside of the rain and strong wind potential, much cooler air will
pour into the region behind the cold front. High temperatures
Saturday will likely be reached in the morning with widespread upper
40s and low 50s, dropping down well into the 30s by late afternoon.

While much of the area will be drying out by Saturday evening, the
continued CAA will also lead to the development of lake effect snow
east of the lakes Saturday night. Surface high pressure quickly
building across the Ohio Valley and limited synoptic moisture in
place should help limit activity off Lake Erie, though upstream
connections will allow for more favorable setup off Lake Ontario. In
any case however, this lake effect activity should be notably weaker
than that seen behind the cold front just this past Wednesday.

Sunday and into Sunday night, winds will begin to shift
southwesterly and direct any lingering lake effect snows northeast
of the lakes. Daytime highs will only top out in the 30s, with lows
Sunday night down into the 20s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A broad longwave troughing pattern will remain over the eastern half
of the CONUS through much of the new workweek. Surface high pressure
shifting northeast from the Mid-Atlantic coast to the Canadian
Maritimes Monday will provide fair dry weather. Southerly return
flow will boost temperatures back to more seasonable readings in the
upper 30s to low 40s by the afternoon.

A northern stream shortwave rounding the base of the main trough
will pivot through central Canada and the Northern Plains Monday and
Monday night. This feature will lead to the development of a surface
low across southwestern Ontario Province which is progged to shift
east and eventually northeast into northern Quebec Province. This
will initially lift a warm front through the Lower Lakes Monday
night into Tuesday morning, before another cold front crosses the
region Tuesday. Strong northward moisture transport will lead to a
round of rain showers during this period, though with marginal
surface temps in the 30s Monday night can't rule out a rain/snow mix
at this range.

Uncertainty then grows as long range guidance continues to struggle
to come to a consensus on the evolution of the synoptic scale
pattern behind this system...Thus will maintain NBM Chc PoPs for
Wednesday and sChc for Thursday. Otherwise, expect warmer temps for
Tuesday through Wednesday before a cooldown near the end of the week.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
VFR conditions will persist through today with a mix of sun and
mid-level clouds.

A strong low-level jet will move across the region tonight. LLWS and
gusty southerly to southeasterly winds are expected across western
and north central NY including all the TAF sites. LLWS is less
likely at KART overnight. Rain showers will move into western NY
this evening and spread eastward overnight through Saturday. Flight
conditions will likely remain VFR until late tonight. A strong cold
front will move across the region from west to east Saturday
morning to early afternoon and winds will shift southwesterly
to westerly and very windy conditions are expected northeast of
the Lakes.

Saturday...VFR/MVFR and very windy with rain showers
likely.
Sunday and Monday...Mainly VFR.
Tuesday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of rain showers.
Wednesday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of rain showers.

A brief quiet period is expected today as high pressure slides
across the lower Great Lakes. Southerly winds will ramp back up to
15-25 knots by late today or early tonight, becoming southwest and
strengthening potentially to gale force by Saturday as a cold front
crosses the lower Great Lakes. A Gale Watch remains up for Lake Erie
and Lake Ontario.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
West gales of 35-40 knots will develop on Lake Ontario Saturday
into Saturday evening in the wake of a strong cold front. The
combination of onshore winds and wave action will bring a very
low chance of limited lakeshore flooding in low lying areas at
the east end of Lake Ontario. Lake levels are below normal,
which will mitigate flood potential.
