.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will lift across our region tonight into Sunday,
bringing some showers along with much warmer temperatures and the
potential for strong winds. A cold front crossing the region late
Sunday will bring temperatures back closer to normal to start the
new week. The next round of rain arrives Monday and Monday night and
could combine with snowmelt to cause river and creek rises. Some
wintry mix is possible for areas east of Lake Ontario.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A surface warm front currently pushing north through the Ohio Valley
will cross the region from southwest to northeast tonight.
Temperatures for most areas will rise through the overnight hours,
with most of far western New York into the 50s by Sunday morning.

Broken line of pre-frontal/warm advection showers arrives into
western New York late tonight/early Sunday morning then expands
quickly eastward through Sunday morning, but this activity will
quickly end as the warm sector and mid level dry slot move into the
region. This will leave mainly dry conditions the rest of the
day, although there may be band of low topped convection that
may develop during the afternoon and early evening along the
cold front. Temperatures within the warm sector will surge to
record or near record levels with most highs in the mid to upper
60s with even a few 70s.

Main concern for Sunday remains the potential for strong and
potentially damaging winds.

Aggressive 6 hour 500 mb height fall center on track to move
through western New York around mid day Sunday, with a ~995 mb
surface low tracking north of the area. Low level wind fields
remain very impressive with 850 mb winds near 80 knots and 925
mb winds of 50-60 knots. Biggest question remains as to how
much mixing will take place within the warm sector ahead of the
cold front, as this is normally a less efficient environment to
mix stronger winds to the surface. Sunshine, how much and how
long will play a crucial role in how much of the wind aloft can
get to the surface. Momentum transfer profiles suggesting that
we are likely looking 50-55 knots being able to mix to the
surface generally from a corridor from Buffalo to Rochester,
maybe as far east as Oswego county and potentially as far south
as portions of the Finger Lakes and Southern tier. Of course,
less sunshine would limit this amount of wind while more
sunshine could bring even higher gusts along with a larger
coverage area. Will maintain the high wind watch for the entire
area and try to pin down a more confined area for the greatest
wind threat in later forecasts, but it should be noted that this
event could be a significant if greater mixing depths can be
achieved.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Post frontal winds will remain breezy through the evening hours
Sunday night, but with a short wave ridge axis passing over our
region along with a small area of surface high pressure wind gusts
will rapidly diminish after midnight.

This surface high is weak...passing to our east by Monday morning
such that the next system to the west will begin to impact our
region late Sunday Night and into early Monday morning. A shortwave
trough will drive a surface low through the Ohio Valley...with a
warm front from this low pushing into our region. Mainly rain along
and ahead of the warm front will slide into our area Monday morning.
A little snow may start at the onset before warmer air pushes over
the region changing precipitation to then just plain rain. Snow
accumulations of an inch or so possible east of Lake Ontario
through midday Monday.

The challenge with this event is the track of the surface low. The
12Z NAM brings the deepening low just by to our west and
north...such that a much milder airmass flows into our
region...along with a gusty afternoon wind. While this scenario is
also supported by a few 00Z GFS and 00Z ECMWF ensemble members...the
12Z GFS, Canadian and 00Z ECMWF continue to track the low to our
south. This would result in a cooler forecast...and less wind.

The other concern for Monday and beyond will be river flooding.
With a +2SD PWAT anomaly, rainfall amounts could reach an inch
across the Southern Tier (just to the NW of the forecasted
surface low) with a good half to one inch elsewhere across WNY.
This, combined with snow melt may bring a few creeks and river
back to near bankfull. Confidence for a flood watch is not high
enough at this time, but will mention it in the HWO product.

Some accumulating snow, generally less than an inch, Monday Night
will be possible across the region along the cold conveyor belt
behind the departing surface low.

Later Monday Night and Tuesday, a much colder airmass will advance
into our region with temperatures at 850 hPa dropping into the low
negative teens. This will be marginally cold enough for a lake
effect response, with limited lake effect snow expected. Model
forecast soundings display the bulk of the moisture beneath the snow
DGZ by Tuesday which will limit the overall snow accumulations.

Though cold aloft, the higher elevation sun will help to push
temperatures past the freezing mark for much of the region Tuesday.
There could be sunny breaks through the afternoon as a broader
surface high pressure pushes towards our region. Limited lake snows
on a northwest flow Tuesday will end through the day as the surface
high nears. Tuesday night will generally be dry and cool...with
overnight lows in the 20s across WNY...and teens east of Lake
Ontario.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
During the first part of the period, weak high pressure will remain
in place over our area, sandwiched in between one area of low
pressure moving by to our north and one moving by to our south. The
southern system will pass closer to our area, however any precip
associated with it looks to remain to our south at the time of this
package, keeping mainly dry weather in place for Wednesday and
Thursday.

Robust shortwave diving south across the northern Plains will help
to carve out a deep upper level trough across the central CONUS on
Friday. This will allow for another warm up to close out the work
week owed to deep southwesterly flow setting up downstream of the
deepening trough to the west. As is typical when we warm up this
time of year, there will also be an uptick in available moisture,
which will allow for an increasing chance for some rain showers on
Friday to accompany the warm up. A strong cold front will then be
poised to cross the region bringing the likelihood of precipitation
sometime Friday night into the start of next weekend. As to be
expected there are timing differences this far out in time as to
when exactly the front plows across the region. At this point,
timing appears to be sometime between late Friday and Saturday
morning. Much colder air will pour across the area in the wake of
the FROPA with rain changing to snow, with some lake effect snows
expected to develop downwind of the Lakes.

Otherwise, expect above average temperatures for Wednesday and
Thursday, with much above average temperatures by Friday, before
much colder air allows readings to plummet back below normal by the
start of next weekend.

.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
For the 18Z TAFS VFR flight conditions around the region will
continue for the next 12 to 18 hours.

Low pressure tracking across the northern Central Great Lakes
Sunday morning will begin to spread clusters of rain into our
region from the west. Ceiling heights may lower to near MVFR
range with this activity.

The biggest concern the last 12 to 18 hours of the TAF cycle
will be strong winds. A LLJ of 40 knots at 2k will reach WNY
this evening, and strengthen to 50 knots Sunday morning. This
will bring LLWS to all TAF sites...and with the jet even
stronger aloft (near 70 knots at 4K to 5K feet) strong wind
gusts are likely to mix to the surface...especially as clouds
decrease through the late morning and afternoon hours. These
stronger southwest winds to the surface will negate the LLWS to
close out the 18Z TAF package.

Outlook...

Sunday Night...Winds diminish. Mainly MVFR/VFR to start,
lowering to IFR late through the night.

Monday...IFR/LIFR with rain/snow mix.

Tuesday...MVFR/VFR with a chance of snow southeast of the Lakes.

Wednesday...VFR.

Thursday...MVFR/VFR with a chance for rain or snow.

High pressure nearby will maintain winds that should stay in the
moderate breeze range through early tonight.

As a deepening storm systems center passes by to our north, south to
southwesterly winds will increase late tonight and into Sunday,
becoming westerly later Sunday behind a cold front passage. A
strengthening pressure gradient with the deepening low passing by
north of Lake Ontario will likely produce sustained winds to 35
knots on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. A Gale Warning has been issued
