northeast and east-central New Mexico.

evening. Areas of blowing dust may remain suspended in the air and
areas of smoke from area wildfires may reduce downstream visibility
around KLVS and KSRR. Strong west to northwest winds will return
shortly after sunrise Wednesday area wide. Wind gusts between 40 and
50kt will be common along and east of the Central Mountain Chain,
with gusts up to 30kt elsewhere. Again, areas of blowing dust and

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong winds and very dry conditions will continue the threat for
dangerous fire weather through Wednesday. Winds will not be as strong
as today but gusts of 45 mph to 55 mph are still likely across the
high plains of eastern NM. Cold air moving into the area tonight will
also bring widespread freezing temperatures Wednesday morning and
Thursday morning. A strong warming trend will begin by Friday with
above normal temperatures, more wind, and the risk for critical fire
weather through Sunday. A back door cold front will enter eastern NM
on Monday with briefly cooler temperatures.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT)...
As the upper low/trough moves into southeastern Montana and
northeastern Wyoming this afternoon it will continue to slowly turn
more negatively tilted with a tenacious jet streak left bisecting
NM. The deep surface low over western KS will continue to race
eastward this evening, but the surface gradient will be slow to
relax. Cold air advection will continue overnight, and the 40 to 50
kt that is still modeled to be over the southern high terrain of the
forecast area will likely lead to a continuation of high winds
through at least midnight. Otherwise most areas should see a
downward trend in speeds this evening, but still gusty conditions
last into Wednesday morning. Tonight’s colder temperatures behind
the Pacific front will include freezing temperatures in the middle
Rio Grande valley (including Albuquerque), and a Freeze Warning will
be issued.

Much of the central to southern Rockies will remain under stiff west
flow into Wednesday with speeds of 30 to 45 kt modeled at 700 mb
through the day, and speeds at 500 mb look much higher at 65 to 80
kt. While most areas may not mix quite that high in the wake of the
Pacific front, a large majority of the forecast area should mix up
to 600 mb. The surface low will be less optimally oriented, but
still vertical mixing should yield windy conditions across many
areas, especially central to eastern zones. Also of note, the air
streaming in from the west will be extremely dry with surface
dewpoints progged to plummet below zero with many areas likely
dropping below -15 F or lower Wednesday afternoon. Daytime high

LONG TERM...(THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY)...
Spring winds will "relax" by Thursday as NW flow aloft becomes zonal
and trends weaker. That said, widespread breezy west and southwest
winds are expected with lcl gusts up to 40 mph over parts of eastern
NM. Patchy cirrus is also expected to move across far northern NM
with filtered sunshine most of the day. Min temps Thursday night will
trend several degrees warmer with more mixing from increasing zonal
flow aloft. Widespread breezy conditions are likely again Friday and
downslope flow will really trend max temps above normal, especially
eastern NM.

A strong surface high building down the Front Range Friday night
will force a gusty back door cold front thru eastern NM by Saturday
morning. Winds will take some time to veer around to the south and
southwest so max temps will trend cooler out east. Breezy west and
southwest winds across the west will keep temps above normal. Another
day of widespread breezy west winds is expected on Sunday with even
warmer temps.

.FIRE WEATHER...
...PROLONGED PERIOD OF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE
WEEK...

Ongoing strong to severe winds will keep critical to extreme fire
weather going through the evening, mainly over the central to
eastern zones. The Red Flag Warning remains in effect through this
evening for the middle Rio Grande valley, the central to northeast
highlands and the eastern plains. While wind speeds will decrease in
speed after sunset, gusty conditions will be stubborn through the
overnight while colder temperatures spill into New Mexico from the
west.

The Red Flag Warning for Wednesday remains in effect, as westerly
winds aloft will remain quite strong and these are expected to mix
down to the surface into the afternoon. Gusts will not be as severe
as what was recorded today, but gusts of 45 to 55 mph will still be
common in the central highlands and adjacent east central plains.
Despite the cooling effects of today’s Pacific front, a pronounced
dry slot will bring in very low dewpoints to NM, and humidity will
plummet Wednesday afternoon due to such dry air streaming in from
the Great Basin. This should create several hours of critical
conditions.

Wind speeds will reduce into Thursday, but breezy to windy
conditions will still be found across most areas. The strongest
speeds appear to be along and east of the Sangre de Cristo
mountains, and between the earlier arrival of such dry air and
warming temperatures, humidity values should plummet to single digit
values on a widespread basis Thursday afternoon. This will pose
increased concerns for critical fire weather conditions Thursday and
the Fire Weather Watch will remain in effect for northeastern zones.

Friday’s wind speeds do not appear to be quite as strong as previous
model runs were suggesting, but still breezy. This could keep an
isolated or spotty threat for critical conditions, mainly in the
northeast highlands. A backdoor cold front could disrupt the flow
and wind direction for eastern NM Friday night into early Saturday,
but regardless wind speeds seem to increase into the weekend with a
rising threat for at least scattered areas of critical fire weather.
