The nearest sounding before it

Minneapolis, MN (KMPX), launched 12:00Z, 4.6 hours before the alert went out and 187 km from the middle of its area. This is the routine balloon launch nearest before it, the air the forecaster had in hand, not a measurement taken for the alert.

Mesoscale Discussion 0923
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1134 AM CDT Fri Jun 11 2021

Areas affected...parts of far southeast Minnesota into central
Wisconsin

Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely

Valid 111634Z - 111830Z

Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent

SUMMARY...A couple damaging gusts or severe hailstones are possible
with the stronger storms through the afternoon hours. The severe
threat is expected to be too isolated to warrant a WW issuance.

DISCUSSION...Isolated to widely scattered thunderstorm development
has been underway over the past hour or so as diurnal heating has
fostered enough localized lift along multiple diffuse baroclinic
zones. Continued surface heating may promote up to 2000 J/kg MLCAPE
given the presence of upper 60s to near 70F dewpoints, overspread by
6-6.5 C/km mid-level lapse rates. Nonetheless, deep-layer shear is
expected to remain weak given weak upper flow due to the presence of
mid-level ridging. As such, most of the storms are expected to be
relatively short-lived. Any damaging gust/large hail threat that
manifests would be associated with the more isolated, intense
downbursts. Given the isolated, brief nature of the severe threat, a
WW issuance is not expected.
