Our post fropa winds will keep gusts for several hours this evening and slack to 5-10KT around midnight to dawn, all while increasing aloft with speed shear of 30-40KT by two thousand feet from 09-15Z with surface gust resuming with early heating and mixing. NW16G29KT for TX terminals and NW15-25KT elsewhere all afternoon as a strong upper low moves from the plains to across the MS river valley. /24/ && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 222 PM CST Thu Jan 14 2021/ SHORT TERM.../Tonight through Friday Night/ Cold front continues to make steady SE progress across the region this afternoon with gusty NW winds following fropa and continuing through sunset. Clouds are limited to some thin cirrus both ahead of and behind the front, very sparsely noted on visible satellite. Thus, expect mostly clear skies overnight with low temperatures falling into the lower to mid 30s as W/NW winds drop off sharply later tonight. The main weather theme on Friday will center around the return of gusty NW winds due to an enhanced pressure gradient, resulting in sustained speeds from 15-25 mph with higher gusts in excess of 30 mph. Expect a Lake Wind Advisory to be issued for the entire area given these expected wind speeds. In addition, the winds combined with very dry air in place behind the cold front will also result in very low RH values on Friday, generally in the 15-25% range as temperatures gradually warm into the lower to mid 50s by Friday afternoon. Wind speeds will gradually drop off after sunset with temperatures falling into the upper 20s to lower 30s for overnight lows. /19/ LONG TERM.../Saturday through Thursday Night/ We begin the long term portion of the forecast on Saturday with strong northwesterly flow aloft as we will be along the backside of a vigorous upper level storm system across the Ohio Valley with ridging noted aloft across the Pacific Northwest. There will be a weak disturbance in this flow across the Intermountain West that will quickly move into the Plains Sat Night into Sunday, bringing with it another shot of colder/drier weather before that trough quickly exits the Eastern Seaboard on Monday. Our next storm system will be diving into the Pacific Northwest Sunday Night into Monday and will become cutoff from the very progressive westerlies to begin the upcoming work week. Nearly zonal flow across the Southern Plains/Lower Miss Valley will eventually become southwesterly aloft as the cutoff low/trough across Baja California begins to slowly fill and eject out towards the Four Corners Region of the Country late Tue into Wed. Once our flow aloft becomes southwesterly, we should begin to see increasing Gulf and Pacific moisture and this will result in increasing chances for showers and a few thunderstorms beginning late Monday Night but especially Tue through at least Thursday of next week. A weak cold front will try to move south and east towards the I-30 Corridor during the day Tue but it will not make it and will likely even return back northward on Wednesday, likely awaiting the arrival of the longwave trough passage which does not appear to take place across our region until sometime on Thursday. Will need to watch for the possibility of locally heavy rainfall with this system and a prolonged period of rainfall Tue thru early Thu of next week. Our area has very saturated soils not to mention most tributaries being elevated from previous rainfall.
