Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 245 PM PDT Wed May 12 2021 .SYNOPSIS...A weak system will move exit the region this evening with a weak trough over the area again Friday. An upper ridge will build over the weekend. The ridge will break down Monday allowing a series of weather systems to move into the area next week. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...A weak upper short wave will push east of the area tonight with isolated showers ending early this evening. Dry west to northwest flow aloft will prevail on Thursday. Low level onshore flow should bring low clouds in the morning then afternoon sunshine after they burn off. A weak upper trough will carve out over the area on Friday with an upper low spinning up well to the south but it looks dry this day as well. Low level onshore flow will continue but be a bit weaker on Friday. That should translate into less low clouds in the morning and plenty of sunshine later in the day. An upper ridge will build in from the west on Saturday for another dry and mostly sunny day after patchy low clouds in the morning. High temperatures will creep up a few degrees each day with lower to mid 70s for much of interior by Saturday. Schneider .LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...An upper ridge over the area will weaken and flatten on Sunday as a weather system passes well to the north. Nonetheless, highs will be in the 70s for much of the interior. An upper trough will carve out over the Eastern Pacific then move over the Pacific Northwest Monday through Wednesday. This will bring cooler and showery weather, especially Tuesday and Wednesday. There could even be a little snow over the higher elevations by midweek as snow levels lower to 4000-4500 feet. Highs will go from a few degrees above normal on Monday to a few degrees below normal Tuesday and Wednesday. Schneider && .AVIATION...Western Washington skies are continuing to improve this afternoon as a weather system well to the north moves eastward. While we are expecting VFR conditions to continue for much of the area this afternoon, the nightly round of marine stratus is expected to come in and decrease ceiling heights later tonight. The extent of that degradation will be very dependent on the terminal location. KHQM, KCLM and KPWT which are close to the area waters and prone to low ceilings and fog will likely see IFR to LIFR ceilings and potentially some fog reducing the visibility during the overnight and early Thursday morning. KOLM, KPAE, and KBFI are more likely to only reduce down to MVFR during the overnight. KBLI will likely remain in VFR into tomorrow. As the morning progresses, stratus is expected to lift and scatter out through the morning. Bringing the terminals back to VFR by afternoon. Wind wise, we are starting to see W/NW winds increase slight this afternoon with sustained speeds generally remaining 8-12 knots with the occasional gust 15-18 possible. The exception to this being KHQM where onshore flow is a bit stronger, so expect sustained closer to 15 knots with the occasional gust up to 20 certainly possible. Winds will begin to ease starting around 08-10 UTC but will begin to turn northerly during the early morning hours. By 18 UTC Thursday expect northerly flow of 5-8 knots at the W WA terminals. KSEA...Currently the terminal is experiencing scattered to broken skies with northerly winds around 10 knots, with the occasional gust around 15 knots. While skies will continue to clear out this afternoon we anticipate stratus returning during the overnight. This will be a result of the nightly push of marine air inland. The stratus will gradually move into the terminal around 12 UTC and will likely bring conditions down to MVFR until around 16 UTC. During this time winds will have eased down to 3-5 knots and are likely to become a bit variable. As the sun rises the stratus will gradually scatter out and a return to consistent northerly flow at 5-8 knots. Butwin && .MARINE...The weather system that brought some scattered light rain and increased clouds has moved eastward. Typically behind these systems a westerly push down the Strait of Juan de Fuca occurs resulting in a small craft advisory. While high resolution models have this occuring with SCA winds, the pressure gradient is just not there. As a result we believe the most likely scenario is that the winds will remain closer to 15-20 knots with the occasional gust above the SCA level. Winds will ease slightly through the Strait on Thursday before another diurnal push Thursday night. This push will likely be a bit stronger due to more NW flow at the west entrance that will help it along. A SCA is expected to be issued for this one. With general NW flow starting Thursday afternoon, all the area waters will likely be experiencing some breezier conditions, particularly the Northern Inland waters. Currently we do not expect the wind to reach SCA levels for this area Thursday night. Looking at ocean conditions, westerly swell will continue into early next week. Combined seas will remain 3-5 feet through Friday afternoon, where they may increase slightly (5-8 ft) over the outer coastal waters due to increased winds.
