The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
  Northwestern Edgecombe County in central North Carolina...
  Central Halifax County in central North Carolina...
  Northeastern Nash County in central North Carolina...

* Until 730 PM EDT.

* At 337 PM EDT, Local law enforcement reported flash flooding 
  across the warned area. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have 
  fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible 
  in the warned area.

  HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by heavy rain.

  SOURCE...Law enforcement reported a neighborhood in Whitakers,
           NC has been evacuated due to high water.

  IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban
           areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as
           other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
  Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, Halifax, Dortches, Enfield, 
  Sharpsburg, Weldon, Whitakers, Battleboro, Tillery, South Weldon 
  and Tar River Reservoir.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood 
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.

Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law 
enforcement and request they pass this information to the National 
Weather Service when you can do so safely.

CENTRAL HALIFAX AND NORTHEASTERN NASH COUNTIES...

Flood waters have begun to recede. The heavy rain has ended. While 
flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat, there could be some 
lingering ponding on roadways. Please continue to heed remaining 
road closures.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 600 AM EDT Friday for a 
portion of central North Carolina.
