.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday. Occasional light snow will
remain overnight as another weak wave moves across and tries to
squeeze any snow it can, especially over terrain and where stratus
remains or is forecast to redevelop overnight. With more cloud
cover overall, temperatures will be warmer. Even with a bit of
wind out there, wind chills are not expected to reach -20 or lower
except in a few select spots. For tomorrow and tomorrow night, we
another round of snow is expected...with an uptick in amounts and
wind. Most areas will only see a Trace up to a couple of inches.
Some exceptions are across the Bear River Range where 4-8 inches
could fall, along with enough wind for some pockets of blowing and
drifting snow. We also will be watching the far upper end of the
Snake Plain, where around 4" (if not a bit higher) could fall.
Enough wind with snow (new and currently on the ground) may be
enough for a bigger blowing/drifting snow risk. This would mainly
be from Rexburg to Ashton. Similarly, we could see the same amount
of risk across Island Park, the Big Holes including Pine Creek
Pass, and also from Rexburg to Tetonia. Amounts in those areas
will be in the 2-4" range (locally higher) at lower elevations and
6+" in the mountains. We will NOT issue a Winter Weather Advisory
at the moment, as we have a little of time to iron out the wind
and snow forecast as most of this is later tomorrow and tomorrow
evening. We see a bit of lull tomorrow night, before another
surge brings increasing snow and wind Thursday. Again, most
snowfall amounts will be light, but we will see 2-4" possible
across Island Park, Big Holes and Bear River Range. An uptick in
the risk of blowing and drifting is possible across portions of
the Snake Plain, and eastern/southeast highlands...especially
from Pocatello to Rexburg across to the Teton Valley and back
south toward Swan Valley and the surrounding highlands. Keyes

.LONG TERM...Thursday night through next Tuesday.
A closed upper level low off the southern Pacific Coast will
continue its track further south and then east, driving a series of
shortwave troughs across southeast Idaho. Widespread light to
moderate snowfall is expected Thursday night through Friday
afternoon, delivering an additional T-4 inches below 6,500ft and 6-
12 inches above 6,500ft especially further south and east in the
Bear River Range, Southeast Highlands, and Big Holes. Breezy winds
usher in a more northerly upper flow regime, bringing much colder
temperatures back to our region due to the considerable trough in
the upper atmosphere. Saturday morning lows will be in the negative
double digits in the Central Mountains, Mud Lake Region, and Eastern
Highlands with the warmest locations in the Southern Hills and
Eastern Magic Valley in the low teens. Blowing and drifting snow may
be of concern, but winds as of current guidance are not overly
impressive as gusts look to stay below 25kts. The cold arctic blast
of air looks to only last for Saturday, as this upper level feature
is a fairly narrow channel of cold air in southeast Idaho. For
Sunday, broad zonal flow transitioning to southwest will moderate
temperatures well with highs warming each day through Tuesday as
highs are back in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Long range deterministic
models and cluster analysis solutions are all pointing to a an event
for early to mid next week, with widespread moderate to heavy snow
accumulations. NBM guidance continues to bring this system in a
couple of days earlier than a few operational models, with
substantial uncertainty as to when this system will arrive
precisely.We will continue to track this system through the coming
week for additional more specific details, but the broad consensus
remains a breezy, colder, and widespread snow event at some point
during the first full week of 2022. In the mean time, this New Years
Weekend will stay dry under partly to mostly sunny skies. MacKay

.AVIATION...There are continued lingering impacts following a low stratus cloud
deck that established itself over the Upper Snake Plain this
morning, leading to continuing scattered light snow showers at DIJ
and lower ceilings at both IDA and DIJ this afternoon. Precipitation
impacts remain very low today however, with predominant VFR CIGS/VIS
at PIH, IDA, BYI, and SUN. Slightly breezy conditions exist across
the Snake Plain and Eastern Magic Valley through sunset, with
sustained winds out of the SW/W at 15-20kts. These winds will
gradually quiet down this evening, being replaced with a more broad
northerly component to the winds leading into tomorrow especially
further north in the CWA. DIJ and SUN have returned to normal
diurnal wind patterns with with sustained winds staying around 5-
10kts. An upper level low tracking down the Pacific Coast will bring
scattered snow showers each day to the region through Friday,
beginning early tomorrow in the Central Mountains before
overspreading to all other terminals. Precipitation will again
remain fairly scattered in nature, leading to VCSH with periods of
light to moderate snow. IFR/MVFR CIGS/VIS are expected for much of
tomorrow, with winds again staying slightly elevated. Timing of the
precipitation looks to be around midday through the afternoon hours
