.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will cross the region today. Another strong cold
front will cross the region on Saturday followed by another front on
Monday. High pressure returns for Tuesday and Wednesday with another
cold front arriving on Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Rain continues to increase in coverage and wind continues to
increase this morning ahead of a strong cold front as it moves
eastward across Pennsylvania. Temperatures are surging into the low
60s across the region as the warm front moves northward and WAA
overtakes the area. In fact, the temperature has neared 70
degrees across portions of central and southern Delaware this
morning, before the sun has even risen! Overall, there hasn't
been much change from the afternoon and evening forecast
yesterday with the hi-res guidance continuing with a faster
fropa solution, bringing the front through the urban corridor
around 11 am. Rain has been a little slow to move into the
region, especially southern New Jersey, but it is quickly
entering the region from the west currently.
One trend that has been noticed has been the dry slotting that has
occurred early this morning with showers and increased low cloud
cover ahead of the warm front lifting to the north, leaving much of
our region in a gap between showers to the north and south. This
will quickly come to an end, especially for the southern and western
portions of the forecast area as rain overspreads the region.
Synoptically, a closed low currently sits over the western Great
Lakes with an extensive occluded front draped across the Great Lakes
meeting the triple point with a warm front then extending eastward
from near Buffalo, New York and over our region. A cold front
currently sits over the west-central portions of Pennsylvania. A
strong low-level jet with southerly winds near 50 knots currently
continues to develop ahead of this front, maximizing in strength
over New Jersey as it shifts north and east later this morning and
into the early afternoon. Winds are actually a little weaker behind
the front and the parent surface low and long-wave trough will
weaken into the overnight as another shortwave impulse pivots across
the Great Lakes. This leads to a disrupt in the upper-level flow near
and above 500 mb, spreading out the impact of the system into the
weekend as a series of shortwaves pivot beneath the long-wave
trough.
The good news is that the heavy rain really should move in and out
quickly this morning, largely making its way east of the urban
corridor into the afternoon, though a few showers may persist
through the 1 to 2 o'clock timeframe to the north and east.
Mentioning the overall weakening trend of the system above, this also
translates to the strength of the front this morning. Hi-res
guidance has been suggesting more rain and downpours ahead of the
front and main line of showers and thunderstorms late this morning
in more of a two-punch setup. This may result in a slightly weaker
frontal passage than if all the energy was focused in a single line
of more intense low-topped convection. Still, with the substantial
850-mb jet just overhead, any of the stronger downpours (I struggle
to say thunderstorm as lightning is expected to be quite absent with
this system) can easily mix these wind downward with some gusts up
to 30 mph or locally maybe even higher. The increased forward speed
of the front, bringing it through in the morning with less daytime
warming than in the later afternoon also works against this
mixing...just another limiting factor, but not ruling out locally
damaging strong wind gusts.
Rainfall totals haven't changed all too considerably either with a
good soaking but not overwhelming rainfall given the drier past week
we've seen. Looking at a good half to one inch of rainfall over most
of the area, especially from Philly south, with amounts closer to
one to even one and a half inches across the Poconos into Sussex
County, NJ. We may seem some river response in the Passaic and
Raritan basins, but nothing over action stages are expected.
Highs today will likely be around the 11 am to noon time frame just
ahead of the front, making for a humid morning by November
standards. Temperatures wont drop off too drastically this afternoon
making their way slowly into the 50s by sunset. Much drier air will
quickly work into the region, perhaps being the more notable feature
behind this front. Lows tonight will sit in the low 40s across most
of the region and the upper 30s across the Poconos and Sussex
County, NJ.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
There is no real rest between systems as we stay pretty active
through Saturday. The upper trough starts to push eastward and has a
very strong shortwave rotating through the flow and crossing the
region Saturday afternoon into the early evening. Additionally,
there will be another surface cold front which should cross through
the area earlier in the day. As has been the case through the past
several days worth of model runs, we continue to see a lack of
moisture with this system as dry air ahead of the front has too
little time to rebound after Friday's event. However, the strength
of the boundary and the wave will provide more than enough lift and
showers will develop and move through the forecast area. With the
boundary moving through during he day and temperatures generally
into the 50s to lower 60s, we will see mostly rain fall, though a
few snow flakes may fall across the higher elevations of the
southern Poconos as the precipitation comes to an end and colder air
starts to arrive.
Another thing we continue to monitor are the winds as the front
crosses the area. Soundings show we could mix pretty well with winds
around 20 to 30 mph for a period of time on Saturday. Gusts could
potentially reach around 30 to 35 mph, mainly during the afternoon
when the gradient is the tightest and the jet is passing by.
The colder air makes its way into the area on Saturday and we will
definitely start to feel it through the day as the front moves
through. Highs should reach into the 50s to lower 60s across the
area but will fall quickly as we head into the afternoon, which is
definitely helped by the fact that the sun sets earlier and we lose
any residual heating.
Skies clear but winds stay up for quite a while overnight, possibly
dropping off towards daybreak. With cold air moving air, overnight
lows will drop into the 30s with some 20s expected across the higher
elevations.
High pressure will ridge northward into our area on Sunday, which
should give us a nice crisp fall day across the region. Highs will
be cold for mid-November and may struggle to reach the 50s through
much of the region, though closer to the coast lower 50s are
likely. On average, highs will be 5 to 10 degrees below normal.
Increasing clouds late Sunday through the night will help to keep
the temperatures from really bottoming out overnight. Overnight lows
will be in the 30s across the region. As the next system starts to
make its way towards our area, we could see some showers develop by
Sunday night, though chances for precipitation are much more likely
as we head into Monday.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The next shortwave/cold front combo arrives in the area on Monday.
This shortwave looks stronger on recent model runs and should pack
another punch across the region. Like the previous wave, it looks to
lack a good deal of moisture but with a southwest flow ahead of it,
we should have enough moisture in the area to allow for some showers
to develop. With the cold air entrenched across the region, expect
that there will be snow mixed in with the rain as the boundary
crosses the area. Precip should quickly end by Monday evening with
mostly dry conditions expected thereafter. With a strong northwest
flow across the region we may continue to see some flurries or very
light snow showers across the higher elevations into Tuesday
morning.
The cold air is reinforced by this frontal passage and expect
Tuesday to be just as cold as Monday across the region, though the
bright shining sun may give a false sense of warmth.
High pressure builds in for Tuesday and should continue to remain
across the region through Thursday. The airmass should be able to
modify as it starts to push to the east and warmer air will start to
return to the region. Highs on Wednesday will be much more
seasonable and near normal with Thursday rising into the 50s to
lower 60s.
Another front may move into the region on Thursday, bringing more
showers and quick change in temperatures for the end of the
week.

.AVIATION /12Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Today...Generally MVFR this morning as heavy rain moves across the
terminals ahead of a cold front. Conditions have been a little
slow to drop to MVFR across some of the Philly terminals this
morning, but rain and lower CIGs are very close to moving into
the region from the west. VSBY restrictions are likely as well
with the stronger downpours down to 2 to 3 miles at times,
especially from 11 through 15Z. IFR CIG restrictions are likely
to be from 12 to 16Z as a broken line of downpours with some
embedded thunder moves along the cold front from west to east
over the terminals. Southerly winds will be strong ahead of the
front from 15 to 20 knots with gusts from 25 to 30 knots,
quickly turning westerly to west- northwesterly after the front
passes east around 15-16Z across the Philly terminals. Winds
will subside quite a bit behind the front from 5 to 10 knots and
gusting to 15 knots. A return to MVFR behind the front as well
after 16Z and back to VFR generally after 20Z. Moderate
confidence overall, with some uncertainty in the finer timing
details.
Tonight...Generally VFR with light and variable winds. High clouds
will be on the increase by early Saturday morning. High confidence.
Outlook...
Saturday...Mainly VFR expected. Southwest to west winds 10 to 15
knots increasing to 15 to 20 knots with gusts up to 30 knots
possible during the afternoon and evening. Chance of showers. High
confidence.
Sunday...VFR expected. West-southwest wind around 10 knots. High
confidence.
Monday...MVFR or lower possible in rain/snow showers. Otherwise, VFR
expected. West winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts of 20 to 25 knots.
Moderate confidence.
Tuesday...VFR expected. West-northwest winds 10 to 15 knots with
gusts up to 25 knots possible. High confidence.

.MARINE...
SCA conditions on all the waters through 11 am, then across the
Atlantic waters through 2 am, dropping to only the northern three
Atlantic zones after 2 am and lasting through the evening.
Southeasterly winds from 10 to 25 knots gusting to 30 knots this
morning turning southerly after 8 am. A few gale-force gusts are
possible, but will primarily be associated with the convective line
of showers and thunderstorms as a cold front crosses the area, which
may lead to a few Special Marine Warnings. Winds subside behind the
cold front this afternoon from 10 to 15 knots. Seas from 5 to 8 feet.
Tonight...SCA conditions continue across the Atlantic waters with
seas remaining from 4 to 6 feet. Light northeasterly winds from 5 to
10 knots.
Outlook...
Saturday and Saturday night...The SCA has been extended on the
northern and central NJ waters through Saturday. There is along
enough lull on the southern NJ and DE waters that the SCA was not
extended into Saturday at this time.
South winds around 10 to 15 knots will become southwest by midday
increasing to 20 to 25 knots. Winds will gust around 25 to near 35
knots, especially for a period of time late afternoon/evening. Seas
will remain around 5 feet across the northern and central NJ waters
and build through the day. Seas on the southern NJ and DE waters
will build from 2 to 4 feet to 5 to 7 feet by Saturday night. Both
winds and seas are expected to subside overnight. A SCA will likely
be needed for Saturday. Confidence in widespread gales is low at
this time but can't be ruled out.
Sunday and Sunday night...Sub-SCA conditions are expected on the
area waters.
Monday and Tuesday...Seas will build and near 5 feet Monday night
into Tuesday. West-northwest winds 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to
30 knots by Monday afternoon and continuing into Tuesday. A SCA will
likely be needed.
