Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 806 PM EDT Wed Sep 15 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A cold front will drop down into the region this evening, then stalls nearby Thursday before washing out on Friday. A coastal low may bring some unsettled weather to the region Friday before moving away on Saturday. High pressure will build in on Sunday, eventually settling over the waters off of New England through mid week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/... A fast moving mid-level trough will pass north of the area tonight providing forcing for showers and thunderstorms through much of the period in the vicinity of a slow moving frontal boundary, which will move into the area overnight. The remainder of the daytime is expected to be mostly rain-free, although storms developing and intensifying across central PA will continue moving eastward into the evening hours. The wind should favor the south with speeds increasing to 10 to 15 MPH and gusts reaching 20 to 25 MPH. Thunderstorms have moved through the western portions of the CWA from the Poconos and now into the Lehigh Valley with a very slow eastward motion. The environment remains supportive of marginally large hail and convective downbursts with DCAPE values from 1000 to 1100 J/kg. Given weaker low-level shear values below 30 knots, storms have been more on the pulsy nature, going up and quickly collapsing on themselves. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 PM for portions of northwest NJ and also includes the portions of eastern PA. This is to highlight the threat of damaging winds with any stronger storms that move into the area late this afternoon and through evening. For now, removed Carbon and Monroe Counties from the watch as storms have moved east of the Poconos and stable air has overspread these areas. Based on the somewhat late arrival time of the thunderstorms, they should begin to slowly weaken during the evening hours as they move toward and into the Interstate 95 Corridor. All the guidance suggests this trend, but there are differences in how quickly the decrease in convective activity will take place. We will forecast a very gradual weakening between 8:00 PM and midnight, with only some lingering showers after that time. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch may need to be extended in time or expanded slightly in area in a future update based on the latest trends, but this seems unlikely at this time. The CAMs have been consistent in indicating another round of showers and thunderstorms developing across Delmarva and moving across the coastal plain and Philly metro overnight. I have adjust the PoP forecast up slightly for this period in these areas. As deep moist return flow continues, precipitable water values will rise into the 1.6-1.9" range, resulting in a heavy rainfall threat. The potential for locally heavy rain also seems confined mainly to the Poconos, Berks County, the Lehigh Valley, and northwestern New Jersey where the stronger convection is most likely to be located. The threat does not appear widespread enough to warrant a Flash Flood Watch though. The wind is expected to shift from the south to the north and northeast in the wake of the cold front. Low temperatures are anticipated to be mostly in the 65 to 70 degree range, with some readings in the lower 60s up north. Despite ridging building to our north on Thursday, an east to northeast surface flow (5-10 mph) will keep high temperatures near normal values in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees. However with the stalled front beginning to wash out across the area along with continued moisture return flow overrunning the boundary, a gloomy and showery day is expected. The high-res guidance continues to focus much of the shower activity along the I-95 corridor, mainly into the afternoon hours as more surface based instability builds. With the continued high PWat values, localized heavy rainfall will be a threat with this activity, especially in the typical trouble spots in the urbanized areas. No severe weather is expected however. && .SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... As we head into the end of the week, we turn our eyes to the potential coastal system, which looks to remain largely offshore. While the storm itself looks to remain far enough away to have much impact across the area, there is still the possibility that there may be some showers that move in on the east to northeast flow. This flow should help to keep us more stable so expect it will remain more showery than thundery as we move through Friday, though some isolated thunder cannot be ruled out. Additionally, the pressure gradient will tighten up and it may become quite breezy in the northeast flow, especially along the immediate coast. With sufficient cloud cover, we won't be nearly as warm as it has been of late. Daytime highs will only rise into the 70s to around 80, though it may feel cooler with the winds blowing. The cloud cover will remain through Friday night, keeping temperatures from really bottoming out and they will likely remain the mid to upper 60s across the region. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... The coastal low will be pulling further away from the area moving towards the Canadian maritimes on Saturday. A weak boundary may drop down through the area later Saturday with some low chances for showers or thunderstorms. Coverage looks to be limited at best as the energy is fairly week as it cross the region. Highs will rise into the 70s to lower 80s across the forecast area during the day with overnight lows dropping into the 60s. Things really start to look up for the region as we move from Saturday night into Sunday with surface high pressure slides across eastern Canada and moves across New England. The high will push southward into the Mid-Atlantic before starting to shift to the south, settling off the New England coast through at least midweek. Meanwhile, we will see substantial ridging develop on Sunday with the mid level high cresting overhead on Tuesday. Essentially, this means would should have dry conditions with seasonable temperatures across the region. High temps Sunday through Wednesday will generally be in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Overnight lows will be in the upper 50s to mid 60s, though it may remain closer to the upper 60s at times along the immediate coast. && .AVIATION /00Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight...Ceilings increasing in coverage and lowering to MVFR after 00Z at RDG/ABE and near or after 04Z at the I-95 terminals south. Showers and thunderstorms will accompany the arrival of lowering ceilings, and a few additional rounds of showers or possibly thunderstorms are expected through 09-12Z. Winds initially southerly, then becoming variable before settling out of the east to northeast around 5 kts by 09Z. Moderate confidence overall. Thursday...Initially MVFR ceilings with patchy fog possible. Ceilings are expected to scatter out around 18Z as additional showers and thunderstorms develop, especially along the I-95 terminals. Winds easterly around 5-10 kts. Moderate confidence. Outlook... Friday...Mostly MVFR or lower. Scattered showers and thunderstorms possible. East-northeast winds around 5 to 15 knots. Moderate confidence. Saturday...Mainly VFR. MVFR possible in isolated showers or thunderstorms during the afternoon. North to northwest winds less than 10 knots. Moderate confidence. Sunday through Monday...VFR. North winds around 5 to 10 knots becoming easterly on Monday. High confidence. && .MARINE... SCA conditions will continue through much of the evening with seas around 3-5 feet and southerly winds 20-25 kts. These will diminish overnight, with winds becoming easterly around 10 kts for Thursday and seas around 2-4 feet. Outlook... Friday...Seas will build and likely exceed 5 feet as a coastal low passes to the east of the ocean waters. East to northeast winds will gust around 20 to 25 knots. Saturday through Monday...Seas and winds are expected to decrease below SCA criteria during the day on Saturday and then remain below criteria through Monday. Rip Currents... A southerly wind at 15 to 20 MPH is expected for today. Breaking waves are forecast to build to 2 to 3 feet with a short to medium period southerly swell. A LOW risk for the development of rip currents is anticipated along the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey. A southeast to east wind is forecast for Thursday and it should increase to 10 to 15 MPH as the day progresses. A medium period southeast to east swell is likely and breaking waves should be 1 to 2 feet.
