Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 752 PM EDT Sat Aug 14 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A front will continue to cross the region this evening and settle south of the area into early next week. High pressure will cross north of the area Sunday and Sunday night before moving offshore. Unsettled conditions will return to the area early next week as a warm front and upper air disturbances arrive from the Ohio Valley. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 7:30 this evening the cold front has made it roughly to the I-95 corridor based the surface dewpoints and satellite- derived PWAT fields (the wind shift as mentioned in the previous discussion occurred well ahead of the boundary). This boundary has not been very productive from a convective standpoint with only some cu and short-lived showers forming on it thus far this afternoon... potentially a result of the upper-support pushing off to the north while the best instability remains to our southwest. Given these trends trimmed backed PoPs through early this evening, but did retain mostly low-end Chc PoPs near the NJ coast/over Delmarva where there is a bit more instability for the boundary to work with. The front will continue its southward push through the evening hours and should reach the far southern portions of our area around 06Z. There are indications that a convectively-enhanced mid-lvl perturbation may induce some minor low-lvl wave development along the boundary late tonight into early Sunday morning bringing a renewed chance of showers (maybe an isolated rumble of thunder as well) to primarily Delmarva and far southern NJ. Raised PoPs a bit in the 04-10Z period to cover this potential, but suspect that outside of some locally heavy rainfall, impacts should be fairly limited. By sunrise Sunday morning, dew points will be in the 50s for much of the region! The dewpoints will likely be the more significant change with this front as compared to the temperatures. Lows tonight should be mostly in the 60s (upper 50s possible in the mountains, near 70 possible along the coast), with highs tomorrow mostly in the 80s (70s possible in the mountains and along the coast). While that will be a nice change from lows in the 70s and highs in the 90s, it is generally a 5 to 10 degree decrease as compared to recent temperature trends, while dewpoints will be almost 20 degrees lower than what we have seen the last several days. && .SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... After drier and more comfortable air being across the region during the near term, a return to more typical August weather will happen during the short term. The high pressure to the north will move offshore Monday and a return flow off the ocean will commence. Upper heights will build as well, so while higher dew points will be back, chances for rain will be low at first, and probably be restricted to Delmarva and srn NJ. Highs both Monday and Tuesday will be close to normal with low/mid 80s for the Delmarva, metro Philly and srn NJ. Across the srn Poconos and north NJ highs will be mostly in the mid/upper 70s. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... Temperatures will climb back to a little above normal for the middle and later parts of the upcoming week. It doesn't appear that any excessive heat is in our future however. An upper ridge will continue to build across the Southeast states. Considering the tropics are becoming more active, a building ridge to our south may keep any menacing disturbances from moving towards the Middle Atlantic. Either way, several weak disturbances will ride up across our area to the west of the ridge and bring almost daily chances for showers and a few tstms Wed-Fri and probably into next weekend as well. Thursday will feature the greatest chances for showers as an approaching shortwave and front may drop down from the Great Lakes at that time. We have mostly higher end chance and low likely pops for the area. Highs will run mostly mid/upper 80s with lows favoring the mid/upper 60s N/W and low 70s S/E. && .AVIATION /00Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight... Mostly VFR conditions are expected, although some 4-5k ft ceilings will be possible, particularly at KPNE and southward. Some showers will be possible at KILG, KMIV, and KACY but restrictions are not anticipated. Winds varying between Northerly/Northeasterly around 5kts. Moderate confidence. Sunday...VFR conditions expected with winds initially out of the NE around 10kts, then veering to more E-SE at most of the eastern terminals in the afternoon, while winds may take on more of a W-NW component at the western terminals. Outlook... Sun night...VFR expected. Mon/Mon night...VFR. A few isolated/scattered showers/tstms expected Mon evening and night. Patchy fog possible Mon night. Tue thru Thu...VFR much of the time. Scattered showers and tstms with lower CIGS/VSBYS at times during mostly the afternoon and evening hours. Patchy morning fog also possible. && .MARINE... Winds and seas should stay below SCA criteria through Sunday. However, winds are expected to shift to northwesterly by late this afternoon, and northeasterly by Sunday morning. Winds will likely gust above 20 kt Sunday morning, but still expect gusts to stay below 25 kt. Outlook... Overall, sub-SCA with fair weather much of the time. Scattered tstms Tue-Thu with localized higher winds and seas possible. Rip Currents... Although a light onshore flow will develop by Sunday and persist through Monday, this flow will remain light (10-15kts), and seas (a mixture of NE-wind waves and low amplitude SE-S swell) should remain 2-3 ft.
