Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 631 AM EDT Sat Aug 28 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A weak frontal boundary will become nearly stationary in or just south of the area today, with low pressure drifting southeastward into the western Atlantic through tonight. The front will lift back through the region by Sunday night. A cold front will then move southeastward through the Northeast early next week. The remnants of Hurricane Ida will progress northeastward along the front during the middle to latter portions of the week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Showers and thunderstorms from earlier in the overnight hours have tapered off. The cold front runs across Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey will continue to sag southward this morning. Another area of showers is developing over New York Harbor, around Middlesex and Monmouth counties. This will be the wave of showers and eventual thunderstorms that will impact eastern New Jersey later today. Otherwise, there is some strong shortwave energy over southern New Jersey, and this will interact with the front to allow for a weak wave of low pressure to develop in that area. Cooler air sags into northern New Jersey and the southern Poconos, so although scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible here, PoPs will be fairly low, and not expecting heavy rain. Onshore flow south of the front will allow for moisture to increase, and PWATs will be in excess of 2.5 inches across southern New Jersey. Instability will be high here, as well, with SB CAPE values around 2000 J/kg. The focus will be on southern New Jersey, and that is where the heavy rain will be focused. Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for portions of southern and eastern New Jersey. Really not a great day, as onshore flow will also allow for status to develop. So not expecting much in the way of sunshine, except for maybe portions of Delmarva, where it remains south of the cold front, and thus, it will stay quite warm and humid. A wide range of high temperatures on tap for today, with highs in the low to mid 70s in the southern Poconos and northern New Jersey, and generally in the mid to upper 70s to around 80 in southeast Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. Southern Delmarva will be in the mid to upper 80s. Showers taper off tonight, and with abundant low level moisture over the area, patchy fog is possible once again. Lows tonight generally in the 60s to low 70s. && .SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... The large-scale pattern will feature a strong midlevel ridge in the southeastern U.S. with a weak, convectively-enhanced vorticity maximum drifting southeastward through the central/southern Mid-Atlantic and adjacent western Atlantic. Meanwhile, a potent vort max will lift northeastward from the Upper Midwest at 12z Sunday to southeastern Canada by Monday night. This will allow dangerous Hurricane Ida to progress northwestward toward the central Gulf Coast, likely making landfall Sunday night. For our area, the lingering effects of the weak mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) and the stalling frontal boundary will dominate our weather Sunday and Monday. The MCV will likely have drifted far enough southeastward for its influence to remain generally off the coast by Sunday morning, though cannot rule out some lingering precipitation in coastal areas of southern New Jersey and Delaware. Meanwhile, the cold front sinking southward through the region today will begin its return northeastward as a warm front, in response to the northern- stream system lifting northeastward into the Upper Great Lakes and vicinity. With onshore flow to the north of the southward-shifting MCV- like feature, this should lead to combined orographic lift and convergence along the returning warm front. Though not expecting widespread convection in this regime, there will likely be some isolated to scattered showers/storms during peak heating. High temperatures will be a challenge owing to uncertainty associated with the returning front as well as lingering cooling effects from onshore flow to the north. The warmest temperatures should be in the south/west portions of the CWA (likely at least middle 80s), while areas north of Interstate 80 may remain in the 70s. Convection will likely wane Sunday night, with warm/muggy conditions returning with the front's retreat northeastward. This sets up a hot/humid day Monday, with another round of heat indices approaching advisory levels. Models are likely slightly conservative with temperatures, so the forecast may end up a little bit hotter than it is currently. A cold front attendant to the large-scale trough in southeast Canada will begin its push southeastward into the northern Mid- Atlantic Monday, likely moving into the region Monday night. With diurnal heating in advance of the front, should be another day of scattered convection across much of the Northeast. High precipitable water values (near/above 2 inches), weak tropospheric winds, and ample instability will lead to another day of slow-moving pulse storms capable of localized flooding and isolated downbursts. Precipitation may continue through Monday night (though likely less intense and lower in coverage), given the somewhat stronger large-scale lift expected with the approaching front. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... The main concern in the long-range period remains the potential influence of what will become the remnants of Ida. As the early-week front slowly sags southeastward through the Mid-Atlantic, Ida will lift northeastward along the southwest tail of the front in the Mid-South, acquiring baroclinic characteristics as the northern-stream trough provides considerable large-scale lift downstream. A southwest-to- northeast baroclinic zone collocated with strong low-level convergence and upper-level divergence will result in widespread precipitation in much of the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys northeastward into the Mid-Atlantic during the Tuesday-to- Thursday period. Models are in decent agreement for this time range, with the main differences generally focused on the timing of the remnant low of Ida as well as the exact placement of the surface front (which will strongly influence the zone of heaviest rainfall attendant to Ida's passage). What is clear is that considerable precipitation is likely near the baroclinic zone, via the synoptic ingredients mentioned above as well as the copious moisture advected northward in advance of Ida. Heavy rainfall will be a substantial threat with this system, with hydrologic impacts probable in portions of our area, with model consensus in the Wednesday to Thursday morning time window. Confidence is increasing that widespread precipitation will occur in our area during this period, so have increased PoPs to high-end chance to likely. Stay tuned to the latest forecasts, as confidence will inevitably increase regarding the precise track of the remnant low and the associated axis of highest QPF. Regarding temperatures...Tuesday may remain quite warm as the sinking front lingers near or in the area, but widespread precipitation will likely keep readings lower (possibly mostly in the 70s or lower 80s) Wednesday and Thursday. A period of dry and cooler weather will likely occur after the remnants of Ida move through the eastern U.S., with Labor Day weekend looking potentially pretty nice. && .AVIATION /12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Today (12Z through 00Z)...Main focus for SHRA/TSRA development with VSBY restrictions in heavy rain will be at KMIV/KACY, though scattered SHRA/TSRA possible at the other terminals (KRDG/KABE/KTTN/KPNE/KPHL/KILG).
