.SHORT TERM...
Today through Friday...The much advertised colder weather will
begin to be felt today, as dry northwesterly flow sets up over
the Pacific Northwest. While temperatures will be below normal and
colder than they have been lately, they still will not be
terrible for February...and only a preview of what is to come.
Today will also be the nicest of the next several.
An area of low pressure over the Pacific will move southeastward
toward southern Oregon/northern California where it will reach
around Thursday night. As this low tracks toward the region, a
warm front will extend across northern Oregon, and moisture will
gradually increase later today into Thursday.
The latest guidance this cycle, has for the most part come in
drier across southeast Washington and northeast Oregon, including
the SREF. So while temperatures will be supportive of snow,
amounts do look to be a bit less than earlier model guidance
suggested. At this point, due to the widespread potential impacts
have decided to issue winter storm warnings for the east slopes
of both the Washington and Oregon Cascades and the Blue
Mountains. Most other locations, outside of the Columbia Basin,
Yakima Valley and Kittitas Valley will be under a winter weather
advisory. Some of these headlines may need to be adjusted later as
additional data comes in.
Breezy winds, especially across northern and central Oregon will
cause blowing and drifting snow.
High temperatures today will be the warmest of the next 3 days
with many areas in the mid to upper 30s to even low to mid 40s in
central Oregon. This will be the last day of above freezing
temperatures in the next 5 days, at least.
Thursday is quite interesting, while temperatures will be below
freezing, with highs mainly in the 30s to around 30, some
locations could get close to freezing. However, some guidance
suggests temperatures could be much colder, on the order of 10
degrees. While this appears to be an outlier, the temperatures
that do occur will have a big influence on snowfall and snow
ratio. If it does get close to freezing in some areas any snow
that falls during the daylight hours will have a difficult time
accumulating due to the warmer ground at first and higher sun
angle. A couple of degrees can make a big difference.
On Friday, temperatures will be substantially colder with highs in
the teens and 20s. Friday could ultimately be the coldest day of
the next week. Overnight lows will be in the teens and 20s tonight
then single digits and teens.
.LONG TERM...Friday night through Wednesday...The extended will see
the continued pattern of very active weather as a series of moist
systems pass through the PacNW, each potentially bringing impactful
snow amounts across the CWA. After another very cold day on
Saturday, expect a warming trend into next week.
For the weekend onward, models are coming into better agreement.
General trend is for the large polar low over south-central Canada
to slowly drift east, allowing for a return or more onshore flow
aloft over the PacNW. This will allow for snow chances each day as a
series of potent shortwaves work onshore. First shortwave low/trough
is expected to work onshore Friday night into Saturday as shortwave
ridging passes overhead and shifts east of the region, allowing for
southwest flow to pull ribbon of Pacific moisture into eastern
OR/WA. Plenty of cold, Canadian air in place at the surface and
aloft that will allow for just snow across the CWA. Stratiform snow
will transition to showers Saturday night as the low/trough work
overhead. Cold through Saturday night with highs Sat again in the
upper teens to 20s with lows Fri/Sat night in the single digits to
teens. Expect a lull in activity Sunday with region under drier
northwest flow aloft, but could see a few lingering mountain upslope
showers. Slightly warmer as well on Sunday as the arctic airmass
shifts east and we begin to see a return of more moderate Pacific
air with highs in the mid 20s to mid 30s expected. The next
shortwave expected early next week with more snow and possible low
elevation rain. Models in good agreement with this system with upper
low/trough working onshore near the WA/BC border and plume of
Pacific moisture overrunning the CWA late Sunday night into Monday.
One thing to watch will be if cold air near the surface lingers. If
it is persistent, could see potential for freezing rain, esp early
on Monday. As of now, expecting warmer temps Monday with highs in
the 30s to low 40s. Lingering showers expected on Tuesday with moist
northwest flow behind the departing low/trough. Models hint at
precip diminishing Wednesday with ridging trying to build onshore.
Warmer Tue/Wed with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s.

YKM will see sct-bkn 3500-5500ft, otherwise expect increasing high
level clouds today. A system will begin to build into eastern OR
overnight, with bkn-ovc CIGs 5-6kft developing after 5Z. Snow could
develop at or near BDN/RDM around 8-10Z with MVFR or IFR VIS/CIGs
possible. Snow then expected to expand north and east towards the
other terminals after 12Z Thursday.
