Main concern in the short term is temperatures and wind chills.
Models continue to overforecast temperatures. Yesterday saw about 4
degrees of diurnal warming; today is looking about the same. Lows
tomorrow morning are a blend of hi-res short term guidance, which
combined with wind give us wind chills of -5 to -15 F in the morning
across the northern half to two thirds of Oklahoma. This calls for a
slight expansion to the wind chill advisory.
For tomorrow's highs, leaned heavily toward NBM 10th percentile
which seems most in line with the limited diurnal range seen
lately. Despite several models wanting to scatter clouds tomorrow,
went with a persistence forecast for sky cover as there does not
appear to be any clear mechanism for clearing.
Snow flurries continue across much of the area. Expectation is for
this to continue off and on into tomorrow. Light accumulations are
possible (particularly Saturday morning), but no impacts are
expected.

Winter will really be making its presence known with dangerously
cold temperatures/wind chills and significant snowfall Sunday into
Monday. Any preparations for the upcoming winter weather should be
done either today or Saturday. More specific details below.
Some snow accumulations may begin as early as Saturday evening as
a lead shortwave trough approaches. Therefore, opted to add
probabilities for snow during this period. As the primary
shortwave trough lifts across north Texas, the intensity of the
snow should increase (with deteriorating conditions) across the
west Sunday afternoon and spread eastward into central Oklahoma
Sunday evening into Sunday night. Conditions should improve Monday
morning.
The shortwave trough appears to be fairly progressive with no closed-
low. There is no real evidence of surface cyclogenesis or the
development of a 700 mb low, which are some features we typically
look for to predict where the heaviest snowfall bands may occur.
Nevertheless, vertical cross sections indicate a saturated
dendritic snow growth zone collocated with vertical motion with
the approach of the aforementioned shortwave trough.
One big difference compared our typical events are the snow to
liquid ratios. Snow to liquid ratios are progged to gradually
increase from ~15:1 at the start to ~20:1 near the end of the
event as the temperature profile becomes colder. This is higher
than the typical "wet" snow we get here (i.e., ratios from ~8:1 to
12:1), so it won't take as much moisture to produce significant
snowfall. The high snow to liquid ratio makes the total snowfall
sensitive to total QPF. In the convective season, usually 0.30"
vs. 0.60" isn't a significant consequence. For this event, this
could make a difference between ~6" vs. ~12" of snowfall.
The NBM 07Z probabilistic guidance has the following probabilities
of exceedance (72-hr period 6 PM Sat-6 PM Tue):
Oklahoma City: >12" 7%; >8" 24%; >6" 50%
Wichita Falls: >12" 7%; >8" 14%; >6" 30%
That means there is an 24% chance Oklahoma City may exceed 8" of
snowfall (according to the NBM guidance). However, NBM seems a
little low on the snow to liquid ratios (~10:1 to 15:1 during the
event), so these probabilities might be a little underdone. The
NBM QPF is 0.49" and 0.51" for OKC and Wichita Falls,
respectively. Therefore, our official snowfall forecast is shifted
slightly higher than what those probabilities would suggest with
~6-10" (higher west and north where snow ratios are higher) with
the potential for locally higher amounts. Nevertheless, a slight
change in QPF will change these values. Therefore, I urge people
to be cautious on snowfall totals given the highly sensitive
forecast.
The relatively low water content, combined with breezy northerly
winds, will make the snow easily blow around and drift. Dangerous
travel from both snow drifts and a reduction in visibility are
possible. The drifting will make it difficult to accurately measure
the snow as well.
Besides the snowfall, dangerous, life-threatening cold
temperatures and wind chills are forecast. High temperatures
Monday will be in the single digits and teens with wind chills as
low as about -25 deg F in the morning. While winds will be lighter
Tuesday morning, the air temperature will be quite cold with
widespread subzero temperatures forecast. As a result, dangerous
wind chills will continue.
Another shortwave trough is progged approach late Tuesday into
Wednesday with the potential for more accumulating snow.
Significant snowfall may occur with this system as well, but
details remain to be seen.
While guidance shows a gradual warming late week, opted to trend
toward the colder end of guidance given the potential snow pack.
Temperatures may have to be lowered further if Wednesday's system
results in significant snowfall.
