.SYNOPSIS...
Triple digit heat is expected to arrive this weekend and persist
well into next week. This event will likely be one of the most
extreme and prolonged heat waves in the recorded history of the
Inland Northwest. Unprecedented heat will not only threaten the
health of residents in the Inland Northwest but will make our
region increasingly vulnerable to wildfires and intensify the
impacts our ongoing drought.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
...A RECORD BREAKING AND PROLONGED HEAT WILL ARRIVE THIS WEEKEND
AND PERSIST WELL INTO NEXT WEEK...
Today: A clipper-type system will shift our winds to a north or
northwest direction today and will also provide far north Idaho
with an opportunity for widely scattered showers and
thunderstorms. Hot, dry north winds channeled down the Okanogan
Valley are expected to blow between 10 and 15 mph for much of the
day with localized gusts approaching 25 mph in places like
Oroville and Omak. Any fire ignitions will have the potential to
spread quickly in this environment that will flirt with Red Flag
criteria. As for the thunderstorm potential for far north Idaho,
the majority of the models suggest that the best instability will
be along the Continental Divide and far northwestern Montana from
mid-day to early this evening. The NAM and several members of the
HREF generate enough instability over the high terrain near
Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry to mention widely scattered showers
and thunderstorms capable of brief and spotty rain and a few
lightning strikes.
Friday and Saturday: Our highly advertised heat wave will begin to
build into the Pacific Northwest Friday and Saturday. An unusually
strong upper level high off the coast of southern B.C. will
migrate inland on Friday and amplify as it is pinched between a
trough over the Bering Sea and another downstream trough digging
into the eastern United States. The net result will be high
amplitude ridge of unprecedented strength, and the blocky pattern
over North America will keep the heat locked over our area for
days...probably most of next week. Look for afternoon temperatures
on Friday to climb well into the 90s over most of central and
eastern Washington with places like Moses Lake, Omak, Wenatchee,
and Leavenworth nearing triple digits. By Saturday, the axis of
the 500mb high will be firmly planted over central Washington
pushing afternoon temperatures into the 100 to 105 range for the
lowlands of central and eastern Washington with mid to upper 90s
in north Idaho. Several daily records will be threatened on
Saturday, and it will be just the beginning as temperatures
continue to continue an upward trajectory into the early to middle
part of next week. /GKoch
Sunday through Wednesday: Confidence remains high that the Inland
Northwest will experience an historic heat wave this weekend
through next week. It is now seeming more likely that the triple
digits will hang around through Wednesday and even Thursday,
which would put Spokane at 6 days at 100 degrees or greater
according to our current forecast (Saturday through Thursday...or
longer). For reference, Spokane's current record for longest
streak of 100+ degree days is 6 days, set in July 1928. This is
also the largest number of 100+ degree days in one year,
regardless of being consecutive days.
This heat event raises some concerns. This won't just be one day
in the 100s. Multiple days in a row of these temperatures will
make heat illness all the more likely if precautions aren't taken
because the heat will continue to stress the body each day. It
doesn't help that our natural nighttime A/C of temperature in the
50s and low 60s will instead be in the upper 60s and 70s, posing a
problem for those who don't have an A/C system to cool their home
(i.e. a lot of people in our area). Hot days and warm nights don't
allow the body time to cool down, making people more susceptible
to heat illness in the following days.
The heat will unfortunately be bad news for farmers, too. Low
relative humidities and no precipitation will worsen the already
bad drought. Plus, fuel models suggest record dryness this early
in the season, so wildfires are a concern. Sunday will be a day
to monitor for breeziness in the Basin combined with low RHs. RC
