What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Nov 17, 9:44 PM EST, 53 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Nov 17, 9:44 PM EST, 53 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
944 PM EST Wed Nov 17 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will lift through overnight into Thursday morning,
with the area remaining in the warm sector until a cold frontal
passage Thursday night. High pressure will then build in from
the west on Friday, move overhead on Saturday, then pass
offshore Saturday night into Sunday. A complex frontal system
will affect the area from Sunday night into early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...
A warm front will likely move through the coastal plain tonight,
and the entire area Thursday morning. With little isentropic
lift, and little moisture, the front moves through the area dry,
but with some low clouds across southern CT and adjacent
portions of Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley.

It should remain mild overnight, with temperatures likely
holding steady along the coast via low level WAA.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A longwave upper trough from central Canada into the plains
states moves east through Friday, with the trough axis passing
east during Friday. The associated surface low will remain well
to the west and north of the region Thursday into Friday. A warm
front may be through the coastal plain by Thursday morning, then
pass through the inland areas early Thursday morning. A cold
front will be slow to approach and then move through the area
Thursday night. Much of the precipitation will be behind the
cold front. As a result, there will be little CAPE and no
instability, so will not have any mention of thunder. Moisture
is limited with the front, and precipitation will be less than
1/2 inch. Colder air does move into the region, but will be
lagging behind the ending of the precipitation. So will have
only a chance of flurries or a mix of flurries and sprinkles
across the lower Hudson Valley and into western Passaic county
New Jersey late Thursday night into early Friday morning.
Heights will be rising Friday, as the precipitation will be
over Friday morning.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Models in good agreement with progressive northern stream
shortwave moving east of the region Friday Evening, giving way
to a zonal upper flow for Saturday. At the surface, sprawling
high pressure builds to the east coast Friday Night into
Saturday, gradually sliding east on Sunday.

Potential for good radiational cooling conds Friday Night with
high pressure building in, and then chilly conditions (temps in
the 40s) Saturday as high pressure moves offshore. Increasing
cloud cover Sat Night into Sunday ahead of deepening Central US
trough, with temps moderating to slight above seasonable levels
in return flow ahead of approaching frontal system.

Then general agreement on an intense polar shortwave diving
into the northern plains and Great Lakes Sunday Night into
Monday, carving out an anomalously deep trough across the
eastern 1/2 of the country for early next week, with a deep
phased northern and southern stream upper low (-3 to -4 std 500
HPA heights) tracking through the Mid Atlantic and NE US Monday
Night into Wednesday.

At the surface, good agreement on broad low pressure developing
to the south of Hudson Bay, with associated cold front moving
towards the east coast Sunday Night into Monday, and then
offshore Monday Night into Tuesday. With this being 5 day out,
subtle differences in amplitude and progressiveness of the
trough, as well as nature of phasing exits, and will play a
role in the exact timing of frontal passage, and potential
development, track and timing of low pressure/s along the front.
In terms of sensible weather, strong waa ahead of the cold
front will bring an increasing chance of showers Sunday Night,
with a likelihood for a period of rain Monday into Monday Night
as deep layered lift interacts with Gulf moisture feed. At this
point, progressiveness of this system appears to keep
development of a strong WCB of Gulf and Atlantic moisture (and
therefore heaviest rainfall axis) offshore, limiting any
excessive rain threat. Based on climatology, there is potential
for embedded thunderstorms ahead of the cold front or even a
fine line of convection with strong synoptic lift in a high
shear/weak CAPE environment, but confidence in these details
will not manifest until this weekend.

At this time, the evolution of this system appears to keep
secondary low pressure development and associated precip
offshore or north of the region in wake of the cold frontal
passage Monday Night into Tuesday. Strong wind gust and caa
regime likely during the Monday Night into Wednesday period.
Cyclonic flow under the deep trough (potential closed upper low)
will linger a threat for scattered snow/rain showers Tuesday
and possibly into Wednesday, with temps running slightly below
seasonable.

&&

.AVIATION /03Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A warm front will lift through overnight into Thursday morning.
A cold front will then approach late day Thursday.

MVFR cigs at KSWF should be short lived as the warm front lifts
to the north, and vsby could lower to IFR there overnight.
MVFR vsby possible at KTEB overnight as well. Otherwise, VFR
conds should prevail, with lower clouds moving into areas NW of
the NYC metros during late afternoon.

Mainly light SE-S winds overnight (except closer to 10 kt at
KJFK/KISP where the warm front has moved through) should become
S-SW and increase to about 8-12 kt, highest at KJFK/KISP. Gusts
up to 20 kt likely at KISP and may become possible at
KJFK/KBDR/KGON in the afternoon.

 ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...

No unscheduled AMD expected.

.OUTLOOK FOR 00Z FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY...
.Thursday night...Cold fropa accompanied/followed by showers
with MVFR at times. Possible rain/snow shower mix at KSWF late
but no accumulations expected. LLWS possible coastal terminals.
NW winds G20kt possible after fropa.
.Friday...VFR. NW winds 15-20G25kt, diminishing at night.
.Saturday and Sunday...VFR.
.Sunday night and Monday...Rain likely with MVFR or lower cond.

forecasts, can be found at: https:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90

.MARINE...
Gusty southerly flow in wake of warm frontal passage increase
to marginal SCA levels on the ocean and southern and eastern
nearshore waters tonight. A SCA remains in effect for the ocean
waters, south shore and eastern bays and the Sound east of the
mouth of the Connecticut River later tonight through early
Friday morning. Ocean seas will build in the southerly flow
Thursday ahead of a cold front. The cold front then crosses the
waters Thursday night with a strong and gusty northwest flow
behind the cold front. The gusty flow and elevated seas will
remain on the ocean waters Friday, and the SCA was extended
through Friday.

Residual SCA conditions, mainly on the ocean, Friday evening,
should subside by Saturday morning as high pressure builds
towards the region. Sub SCA conds then expected for the weekend.
SCA conditions likely developing on the ocean waters Sunday
Night or Monday ahead of an approaching cold front, potentially
all waters. Then potential for SCA or Gales all waters in wake
of the frontal system Monday night into Tuesday.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
Around one quarter inch, or less, of precipitation is expected
with a cold front Thursday night. No widespread hydrologic
impacts expected through early next week.
