Area forecast discussion, Nov 10, 12:24 PM EST, 3 hours 42 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New York NY 1224 PM EST Wed Nov 10 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure builds in from the west through tonight. The high then slowly builds east on Thursday, giving way to an approaching frontal system. A warm front passes through late Thursday night, followed by a cold frontal passage on Friday. Another cold cold front crosses through the area Saturday evening. Weak high pressure briefly builds into the area for Sunday. Another frontal system may impact the region Monday, with high pressure returning Tuesday and Wednesday. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... High pressure continues building in from the west. Pressure gradient between the high and a slowly deepening low near Nova Scotia should allow for NW gusts of 20 to 25 mph late morning into afternoon. Ample sunshine and downslope flow in a mild airmass should once again allow for temps to rise 10 to 15 degrees above normal. Continued to lean towards the warmer MOS guidance versus the NBM based on recent days performance and lagging caa. Highs will range from the lower 60s inland to the mid and upper 60s across LI, NYC, and NE NJ. Temps could once again reach lower 70s for NYC/NJ metro. && .SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH FRIDAY/... Both ridging aloft and at the surface will translate east across the area tonight and then offshore on Thursday. The combination of clear skies and diminishing north winds will result in areas of frost outside of the NYC metro. Lows will be close to normal. The sharpening of the ridge aloft into Thursday will be a direct result of a digging upper trough across the mid section of the country. Models have been pretty consistent with this feature and the resultant frontal system that impacts the area late Thursday night into Friday. While a deepening closed low drops SE from the Upper Midwest on Thursday to across the Great Lakes on Friday, there still looks to be enough progression with only about a 6 hour period of moderate to locally heavy showers along and ahead of the cold frontal band. There is marginal instability and deep-layered lift, so have maintained the mention of a thunderstorm. Warm advection showers will develop ahead of the main cold frontal band Thursday night, mainly after midnight and continue into Friday morning. There are still differences in the timing of the cold frontal passage on Friday as some of the Pac energy is just coming onshore today. Additional jet energy diving down the backside of the trough Thursday night into Friday is also a key player. So there will likely be some timing adjustments over the next day or two. For now, the main frontal band rain looks to move into western areas prior to daybreak and then spread east in the morning. Much of the rain is forecast to be across eastern LI and SE CT by afternoon with conditions drying out to the west. However, the NAM and the Canadian are on the slower end of the model envelope, which would delay the heaviest rain until Friday afternoon. A 45-50 kt LLJ ahead of the cold front on Friday will produce southerly gusts of 25 to 30 mph near the coast and 20 to 25 mph inland. As for temperatures, mild conditions will linger into Thursday, albeit a bit cooler than Wednesday. Lows Thursday night will likely occur the first half of the night, with nearly steady or slowly rising temperatures after that. Highs on Friday will once again get up into the 60s. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... No significant changes to the long term forecast and stuck fairly close to the NBM guidance. The cold front moves east of the region Friday night with POPS gradually diminishing and skies beginning to clear out a bit. Cyclonic flow remains into Saturday and with wrap around moisture and daytime instability a few showers will be possible across the region. However, it's possible that Saturday remains dry. A second cold front moves across the region Saturday evening with weak high pressure building in on Sunday. A clipper type system is then expected to move across the area on Monday, however with temperatures slightly warmer than previous forecasts, most of the precipitation will be in the form of liquid with only mixed precipitation possible across the higher terrain of the lower Hudson Valley. High pressure builds in for the middle part of the week. && .AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... High pressure builds over the terminals through tonight, then offshore on Thursday. VFR. NW winds 10-15 kt with gusts up to around 20 kt through late afternoon. Winds and gusts weaken this evening. The wind direction will veer to the NE overnight, ENE-E Thursday morning, then SE Thursday afternoon. Winds veer to the NE and diminish tonight. Light wind speeds Thursday morning become 5-10 kt by afternoon. ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty... Wind direction should remain to the right of 310 magnetic into this evening. Gusts may become sporadic or end 1-2 hours sooner than forecast. .OUTLOOK FOR 18Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY... .Thursday Afternoon...VFR. .Thursday Night-Friday...Becoming MVFR or lower in showers late Thurs Night into Friday. Slight chance of TS. SE-S winds G20-25kt. LLWS possible. .Saturday...MVFR or lower possible. Chance of showers in the afternoon and evening. SW winds G15-20kt. .Sunday...VFR. .Monday...Mainly VFR. Slight chance of showers. Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts, can be found at: https:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90 && .MARINE... NW winds on the heels of a cold frontal passage, 10-15 kt G20kt into the afternoon. Seas on the ocean will be around 4 ft, but can't rule out seas approaching 5 ft for a short time out near 20 nm offshore. High pressure then builds in from the west through tonight and to the east on Thursday ahead of an approaching frontal system. SE winds will ramp up Thursday afternoon and night with SCA conditions likely to develop across all waters. A brief window of gale force gusts on the ocean is possible Friday. That window looks to be Friday morning, but there is some uncertainty with the progression of the cold front which could delay the stronger winds. With the passage of a cold front by early evening, wind gusts will be diminishing to below SCA levels from west to east Friday night, however, ocean seas will remain elevated through Sunday night. Behind another cold front westerly winds may gust to SCA levels on the ocean waters Sunday and Sunday night. && .HYDROLOGY... A frontal system is forecast to bring about an inch of rainfall across the area late Thursday night into Friday. Locally higher amounts are possible. For an upper end, WPC 90th percentile 24h QPF has amounts of 1.50 to 2.0 inches. Some of the rain may be heavy at times, especially Friday morning into the early afternoon. Nuisance flooding looks to be the primary impact at this time. && .OKX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... CT...None. NY...None. NJ...None.
