.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain just east of the Canadian Maritimes
today and then gradually gives way to a slow moving cold front
during the middle of the week. The front will track slowly
across the area late Thursday into Friday, followed by weak high
pressure Friday night into early Saturday. A cold front will
then approach and move across the area late Saturday into
Sunday. High pressure returns early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
This update accounts for observations in temperature, dewpoint,
and sky cover and their respective trends through the afternoon.
Clouds are continuing to overspread the area which is impacting
the temperatures and dewpoints at the surface.

An upper level ridge axis will push east of the area today
while a surface high of the New England coast will drift east as
well. This will allow a cold front over the Great Lakes and
mid-West region to slowly approach.

An east to southerly flow will set up across the forecast area
today, and this will bring in more in the way of moisture in the
lower to middle levels, allowing for more in the way of clouds
than sun. This moisture will be rounding the base of the high,
raising dewpoints through the day from the low to mid 50s this
morning, to the middle 60s by this evening.

Much of any precipitation will hold off until tonight, but there
will be a slight chance for light showers, mainly for Long Island,
northeast New Jersey, and New York City this afternoon as the
moisture moves in from the south.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Southeasterly flow will continue for tonight, advecting in the
moisture rounding the base into portions of Long Island and
southeastern Connecticut, so chances for precipitation will be
higher in these locations. Models are in fairly good agreement with
this feature. However, rain amounts will continue to be light, a few
hundredths of an inch at most, as there is a lack of any feature
providing any real strong lift.

The lower levels will continue to increase in moisture, so patchy
fog will once again be possible in the same general areas as Monday
night...north and west of New York City. In addition to the clouds,
these conditions will mean a warm night, with lows in the 60s to
around 70.

The cold front continues its approach through the day Thursday and
will begin moving through the forecast area late Thursday night, but
only making its way through about the western third of the area. The
continued persistent southeasterly flow will mean warm and humid
conditions continue until then. Any rain showers will continue to be
light until Thursday afternoon as lift increases with the front just
to the west. The high humidity and some daytime heating may spark an
isolated thunderstorm across portions of the Lower Hudson Valley,
northeast New Jersey, southwestern Connecticut, and New York City.
During this time frame, PWAT values rise to around 2 inches.
Therefore, moderate to briefly heavy rain will be possible in these
areas. Will have to monitor for the potential for flash flooding,
given the slow moving nature of the front and high soil moisture
across mainly northeast New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley.

Temperatures will be seasonably warm Wednesday through Thursday.
Temperatures will range from the middle 70s to lower 80s on
Wednesday, with slightly cooler conditions expected on Thursday,
except for perhaps eastern areas, where warmer temperatures may
occur on Thursday rather than Wednesday as the front will still be
well to the west, and any cooler air will not filter in until later.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
What has been an extremely challenging end of the week forecast has
become significantly less so as much of the 00Z guidance and
associated ensemble members are in much better agreement than they
were some 24h ago. This may be directly related to the fact that one
of the key players, PAC jet energy, has become better sampled by the
upper air network over the CONUS. It now seems that this energy will
help to close off an upper low at the base of the northern branch
trough, just east of the Mid Mississippi Valley. The latter of which
will then lift up through the Great Lakes Thursday and into eastern
Canada on Friday, blocked by anomalously high amplitude ridge over
the wester Atlantic.

It does appear that best dynamics will pass to the north and west of
the area with a weakening warm conveyor belt ahead of the frontal
band. There are multiple moisture streams (Gulf and Atlantic)feeding
into this system along with some instability. The slow movement of
the frontal bands always raises concerns, so while a low risk for
flooding, it still bears watching. WPC has placed northern NJ and
the Lower Hudson Valley under a Day 3 Marginal Excessive Rainfall
Outlook. This may hing on whether the departing RRQ of the upper jet
increases lift across these areas.

The best chance for the rainfall will be Thursday night into Friday
morning, with the cold front passing to the east in the afternoon or
early evening hours. It's quite possible that much of the area
clears out by early evening as high pressure noses in from the SW.
The 00Z ECMWF is outlier with a frontal wave developing that could
keep rain chances in the forecast Friday night. Plan to limit
chances to slight chance at this time.

A strong upstream kicker, dropping across western Canada, will carve
out another deep trough across the Great Lakes on Saturday, which
will send a cold front across the area Saturday night into Sunday.
There could scattered showers with the frontal system and even post-
frontal with the cold pool aloft on Sunday. However, it should be
mainly dry with a surge of drier and cooler air Sunday into Monday.

Temperatures will start off above normal to begin the period, then
settle closer to seasonable levels into the weekend and possibly
below normal for Monday.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pressure remains centered just east of the Canadian
Maritimes today.

VFR through this evening. MVFR/IFR conditions likely after 06Z,
lasting into Weds morning. Showers possible overnight into Weds
morning mainly east of the city.

Light E/SE winds around 10 kt or less through the afternoon,
weakening slightly overnight, and increasing from the SE 10-15
kt with gusts 20-25 kt Weds aftn.

     Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...

Timing of flight category changes late tonight could be off by
a couple of hours. IFR could potentially prevail along with
showers late tonight through most of the Weds morning push.

.OUTLOOK FOR 18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...
.Wed...VFR. SE winds 10-15 kt with gusts 20-25 kt.
.Thu...MVFR or lower possible in showers. Slight chance of
thunderstorms afternoon into evening. SE/S winds 10-15 kt gusts
20-25 kt. SE-S winds near 10 kt with gusts more in the 15-20 kt
range at night.
.Fri...MVFR or lower possible in showers. SW-W winds near 10 kt
with gusts 15-20 kt.

.MARINE...
Sub SCA conditions are expected through Wednesday morning. A
persistent easterly to southeasterly flow will allow waves to build
to 5 ft on the ocean by Wednesday afternoon. Waves of 5 to 6 ft on
the ocean are expected through at least Thursday. Additionally, wind
gusts may approach 25 kt on Wednesday, mainly across the western and
central ocean zones.

A wind shift is likely later Friday or Friday night depending on the
timing of a frontal boundary with marginal SCA conditions still
expected to persist on the eastern ocean waters for late Friday and
Friday night. A southerly flow may then return on Saturday with sub
SCA conditions.

.HYDROLOGY...
No hydrologic concerns through Wednesday.

A slow moving cold front will bring a chance for moderate
rainfall across portions of Northeast New Jersey and the Lower
Hudson Valley Thursday into Friday. There is still some
uncertainty with respect to the timing. With high soil moisture
in these locations, and PWAT values approaching 2", we will
have to continue to monitor the potential for flash flooding in
these and surrounding areas. For now, leaning towards more of a
moderate rainfall event which should preclude any hydrologic
impacts.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There is a moderate rip current risk today, followed by a high
risk on Wednesday. Persistent easterly swells will increase into
Wednesday and lead to the increasing risk. A statement was
issued for the high risk of rip currents on Wednesday.
