Area forecast discussion, Feb 21, 12:47 PM EST, 2 hours 32 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New York NY 1247 PM EST Sun Feb 21 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure builds eastward over the region today with a frontal system approaching Monday. A weak warm front will pass to the north on Tuesday, and a cold front will move through Wednesday night. High pressure will otherwise remain in control through the end of the week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... The forecast continues to remain on track with temperatures in the low to mid 30s under plenty of sunshine. Only made minor adjustments to temperatures and dew points over the next several hours. For the remainder of the day, dry and sunny conditions are expected as high pressure builds eastward across the region. A chilly airmass will remain with temperatures today in the low to mid 30s which is near 10 degrees below normal. The high then moves offshore tonight and allows for some warm air advection as the flow shifts around to the south/southwest ahead of a frontal system. Temperatures tonight will fall into the mid 20s to upper teens. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY/... A low pressure system moves into the Great Lakes dragging a cold front through the area on Monday then pushing offshore by Monday night. Precipitation is expected to begin across the area around mid morning which will result in rain across coastal areas and mixed rain and snow inland with only the highest elevations far northwest remaining all snow. An earlier onset could produce a brief period of snow across coastal areas but with a south/southwest flow and rates not being intense enough the snow will likely just melt as it hits the pavement. Snow accumulations across inland location will generally be 1 to 2 inches, but some of the highest elevations northwest could reach 3 inches - not widespread enough for advisory consideration. Good agreement among the models that liquid equivalent precipitation amounts range mostly a quarter to half inch. Precipitation will exit quickly east during the evening. Temperatures on Monday will be in the lower to mid 30s across inland locations with upper 30s to low 40s along coastal areas. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... There's a chance that rain is still lingering across eastern LI and SE CT early Monday evening, otherwise dry conditions Monday night. A weakening warm front brings a low chance of rain showers NW of the city, mixed with snow for the highest elevations on Tuesday, otherwise dry on Tuesday, and remaining that way through Wednesday with ridging at the surface and aloft. A cold front then brings the chance of rain showers Wednesday night, then high pressure builds back in for Thursday and Friday, keeping us dry. Looks like Saturday should be dry, but another low pressure system could bring us rain and/or snow chances Saturday night. && .AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... High pressure over the terminals move offshore tonight. A frontal system moves into the region Monday morning, and passes through late Monday afternoon into Monday evening. VFR until late in the forecast, late Monday morning, with MVFR conditions developing as light precipitation begins. A mix of rain and snow is possible at the start at KEWR and KTEB, going to all rain by 18Z. All snow is expected at KSWF with MVFR lowering to IFR. Rain is expected at KLGA and KJFK. NW winds 10-15 kt diminish to less than 10 kt and become W through the afternoon. Winds back to SW around 5 kt this evening, becoming light and variable at the outlying terminals. South winds Monday increase to 10-15 kt, with gusts up to 20 kt possible mainly at the coast. ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty... Occasional gusts 17-20 kt possible until 21Z. No unscheduled amendments expected until Monday morning. .OUTLOOK FOR 18Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY... .Monday...MVFR to IFR in rain, snow inland. Precipitation will be ending 00Z to 03Z Tuesday west to east with VFR conditions. SW/W winds G20kt possible. .Tuesday...VFR. W winds G20kt possible. .Wednesday-Friday...VFR. Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts, can be found at: http:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90 && .MARINE... The remainder of the Small Craft Advisory was allowed to expire as both winds and seas have fallen below SCA criteria on the ocean waters. Conditions are expected to remain below SCA criteria through the overnight as high pressure moves across the waters. Advisory conditions become likely at least on the ocean waters during Monday as winds increase ahead of a cold front and remain gusty Monday night behind its passage. Winds subside for a short time late Monday night, but then increase again Tuesday into Tuesday night. SCA conds anticipated on the ocean through this period, and perhaps on eastern LI Sound as well for a good portion of Monday through Tuesday night. High pressure builds to our south on Wednesday, however the pressure gradient may still be strong enough to sustain advisory conditions on the waters mainly due to gusts through Wednesday. && .HYDROLOGY...
