What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Feb 12, 11:56 PM EST, 3 hours 13 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Feb 12, 11:56 PM EST, 3 hours 13 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New York NY 1156 PM EST Fri Feb 12 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will remain in control through most of Saturday. A series of weak low pressure systems pass to the south from Saturday night into Monday. A stronger low will then move near or just south of the region Monday night into Tuesday. Another low pressure may impact the region late in the week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/... For this update with the high clouds have nudged temps up a couple of degrees during the overnight, thus raising overnight minimum temperatures. This was essentially the only change for this update. Otherwise, high pressure stretches into the area from south- central Canada, keeping us dry. Models in good agreement that it'll be mostly cloudy, so thinking is that it won't be quite as cold as it was last night for areas that typically experience stronger radiational cooling. Even so, lows expected to fall to around 10 or so well northwest of the city, teens for most other locations, and around 20 in the city. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY/... High pressure gives way to an approaching area of low pressure during Saturday. The low will pass well SE of the 40N/70W benchmark Saturday night into Sunday, however, an inverted trough attached to this system will extend northward toward us. Moisture convergence along this trough along with some lift from a mid level shortwave and a jet streak above is probably enough to maintain likely PoPs, focused mostly on Saturday night into Sunday morning. Earliest chances for precipitation will be Saturday afternoon, and low chances for additional lingering precipitation occurs Sunday afternoon. Precipitation types are a challenging part of this forecast. There will be an elevated warm nose for most, if not all of the forecast area, but models disagree on the magnitude of this warmth, as well as the magnitude and depth of the sub-freezing layer that will be just above the surface. Additionally, there might not be enough moisture in the ice nucleation zone at times for northern portions of the forecast area, precluding snow as a PCPN type and leading the the potential of light freezing rain. PCPN begins as snow or a snow/sleet mix. A rough model consensus brings the freezing rain line or a mix of freezing rain and sleet late Saturday night and Sunday morning across most of Long Island and NYC as well some of NE NJ. Farther north, sleet and freezing rain become possible with the snow for about the same time period. This appears to be a low QPF event that could potentially trend drier as some models have shown. Since any advisory-criteria weather likely would not be met until late in the 3rd period, have decided to hold off on issuing any advisories at this point and wait for higher confidence of QPF and thermal profiles before issuing any. Temperatures will remain at around freezing or below on Saturday before falling Saturday night and eventually rising into to low-mid 30s Sunday afternoon. && .LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... Forecast confidence in an active long term continues to increase, but specific details on precipitation types remains low through the period. Several weak waves of low pressure will pass south and east of the area Sunday night into Monday. Two jet streams are indicated by the models with the stronger one to our north and a weaker one lingering over the eastern seaboard. Jet dynamics will likely lead to a continuation of unsettled conditions Sunday night into Monday. Heights are likely to be rising along the east coast into Monday, which introduces a chance of the boundary layer warming above freezing near the coast. The models have been trending this way over the last day or so. Have trended temperatures upward Sunday night into Monday. The probability of precipitation remains slight to low chance and anything that develops looks spotty at this time. A light wintry mix is possible inland with a chance of freezing rain and /or plain rain near the coast. Forecast soundings are indicating a thick warm nose above the surface, so most of the precip should be in the liquid form. The precipitation type. if any occurs, will be dependent on how quickly the surface temperature warms. Monday night into Tuesday...Focus then shifts to a stronger southern stream shortwave that will be nearing the east coast. Low pressure will develop over the Southern Appalachians and then track over the Middle Atlantic early Tuesday morning. Confidence in the track of the low on Tuesday is much less certain, but the spread of the deterministic and ensemble runs varies from a track just south of Long Island to a track that moves over the southern half of the region. The model guidance seems to be in good agreement with the southern stream shortwave with minor changes noted run-to-run. However, the biggest difference among the models is with the handling of the northern stream. Dprog/Dt over the last several deterministic runs and ensemble means indicates the northern stream vortex has slowed down considerably. Earlier runs had it racing across southeast Canada as it weakened, which lowered the heights across the northeast and allowed for much colder low level air to filter southward. The models have slowed the progression of tHigh pressure builds in from the NW overnight. A weak area of low pressure will then develop along the Mid Atlantic coast on Saturday, tracking north and east. VFR. Mid level clouds will filter in from the west and gradually lower through Saturday. There is a chance of MVFR ceilings late Saturday afternoon, but likely holding off until the evening with a light wintry mix of snow and sleet. MVFR conditions develop during Saturday evening with a low probability of freezing rain towards 5- 6z Sunday. NW-N winds less than 10 kt, will gradually veer to the NE by daybreak Saturday and continue into Saturday night at around 10 kt for the city terminals. ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty... No unscheduled amendments expected. .OUTLOOK FOR 6Z SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY... .Saturday night...MVFR, with possible IFR in a wintry mix. .Sunday...IFR or lower in a wintry mix, mainly early in the morning. .Monday...MVFR or lower with a chance of wintry precipitation. Chances increase at night. . Tuesday...Chance of MVFR or lower possible with wintry precipitation. N-NE wind G20-25kt. .Wednesday...VFR.his feature down considerably, which is allowing heights to rise over the northeast ahead of the low pressure. Based on the WPC Ensemble Analysis Tool, 50 percent of the variance in the ensemble spread is explained by changes in the evolution of the northern stream system. Some of this can be seen in the GEFS with several members tracking the low south of the Long Island and several taking the low over or even just north of Long Island. If the northern stream continues to slow down, then a warmer solution and further north track of the low pressure wave is likely to occur. This scenario would introduce much of the PTYPE as plain rain for the southern half of the region and a wintry mix of sleet and/or freezing rain inland. A faster northern stream will help suppress the system and allow for arctic air to filter into the region with potential for a more significant sleet/freezing rain event. The official forecast has been trended towards the slower northern stream and therefore a slightlyHigh pressure builds in from the NW overnight. A weak area of low pressure will then develop along the Mid Atlantic coast on Saturday, tracking north and east. VFR. Mid level clouds will filter in from the west and gradually lower through Saturday. Did not go as aggressive as the 12z ECMWF, but have hedged in that direction. Have introduced a freezing rain or rain wording across the southern portion of the area with the potential of warmer air. A wintry mix of mainly sleet and freezing rain is indicated for inland/interior locations. Even if the arctic air is able to make it fully across the region Tuesday morning as the current OP GFS shows, there may be a difficulty of seeing much snow due to a significant warm nose in the middle levels. The biggest uncertainty lies with the boundary layer, timing of the arctic push, and the track of the surface low. The highest probability for precipitation is currently shown for late Monday night into Tuesday, lowering into the late afternoon and ending by Tuesday night. A brief break in unsettled conditions is forecast on Tuesday night into Wednesday. Arctic air looks to filter into the region Wednesday as high pressure builds over New England. Yet another southern stream system is poised to impact the east coast late next week. Models are in excellent agreement on the occurrence of the system, but differ on timing and ultimate PTYPE. As of now it appears to be an overall warmer storm, but could include snow or sleet at the onset changing to plain rain through the event. The ECMWF does hint at a colder solution as the arctic air may hang on a bit longer over New England. These details will likely be quite uncertain until at least early next week. && .AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... High pressure builds in from the NW overnight. Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts, can be found at: http:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90 && .MARINE... Relatively quiet conditions on all waters for tonight. For Saturday, NE winds increase with the approach of a low pressure system that eventually passes well to the south of the waters late Saturday night into Sunday. Winds and seas could briefly reach advisory criteria at times Saturday night on the ocean , but with this being a 3rd period marginal event, have decided to hold off on that for now. Even though winds subside on Sunday, swell may help build seas up to 5 ft on the ocean, so there's a better chance of advisory conditions starting then. SCA conditions are likely on the ocean from Sunday night through Wednesday, mainly in elevated seas. Winds could come close to 25 kt on all waters, especially on Tuesday as low pressure passes. Otherwise, sub-SCA conditions are forecast on the non ocean waters Sunday night through Wednesday. && .HYDROLOGY...
