.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure south of the region moves offshore tonight. A
deepening coastal low will track south and east of Long Island on
Sunday. High pressure builds into the area on Monday. A frontal system
will impact the region on Tuesday. Another low pressure system is
possible by the end of the week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
High pressure south of the region moves offshore tonight.
Clouds will gradually increase, lower, and thicken through the
night ahead of a developing storm system across the southeast
states. Timing of the onset of precipitation has been slowed by
a few hours and the latest thinking is that the majority of it
comes after day break Sunday morning. Lows will range from the
upper teens across the Lower Hudson Valley with 20s most
elsewhere. Temperatures could level off during the early morning
with the increasing cloud cover.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
No major changes were made to winter storm warnings and winter
weather advisories for Sunday. No significant changes were made to
the snowfall forecast as well.

Low pressure will strengthen off the Middle Atlantic coast Sunday
morning and then track south and east of Long Island near or just
south and east of the 40N/70W benchmark in the afternoon and
evening. The main shortwave responsible for the system is in the
southern stream and will amplify as it rounds the base of a broader
upper trough. The overall fast movement of the system remains high
confidence but confidence in snow banding location, timing, liquid
equivalents, and snow amounts is not as high as one normally would
expect at this time range.

Precipitation Type...The vast majority of the event will be in the
form of snow although it is not out of the question at the very
onset for a brief period of rain/snow mix as the boundary layer
cools on Long Island, specifically the immediate coast and the
Forks. Otherwise, do not anticipate any mixing given the track of
the surface and middle level lows. If there is any sleet, it would
occur in deeper convection which at this time appears to remain
offshore.

Model Overview...The models agree overall on the evolution and track
as mentioned above. However, the differences arise in the liquid
equivalent amounts and therefore snowfall forecast. The NAM12, 3-km
NAM, HREF, and SREF remain the most aggressive with regards to
liquid equivalent amounts and the overall extent of the higher
amounts reaching west of the NYC metro/coast. It is noted that the
SREF can be contaminated with rain due to the usual over amplified
ARW members and have therefore examined the NMB members. The global
models, (GFS, ECMWF, CMC, UKMET, GEFS mean, ECMWF EPS mean) all are
lower with liquid equivalent amounts and therefore lower on the
snowfall from about the NYC metro on NW (<0.50 in). Most of the
guidance agrees that Long Island, especially Suffolk County, and
southeast Connecticut will see the higher liquid equivalent amounts
(0.50-0.80 in). One concern with the global models is that they are
not handling the banding potential well and are over smoothing the
liquid equivalent amounts. The GFS shows excellent lift in the
dendritic growth zone (-12C to -18C) even as far north as the Lower
Hudson Valley where current forecast liquid amounts are lower.
Frontogenesis on the NW side or colder side of the middle level low
is impressive for about a 3-6 hour period from late morning into the
afternoon across much of the region. The mesoscale models agree with
this lift, but are stronger in magnitude and therefore higher in
snowfall/banding potential. Another limitation in the global models
is the handling of the coupling upper jet structure aloft and the
jets amplification, which impacts the extent of the precipitation
shield. The temperature profile for interior locations is cold and
there is indication of significant ice saturation and less
super cooled water (riming), which supports potential of higher
ratio snowfall. Profiles even closer to the coast indicate
potential for higher ratio snow in the afternoon with some of
the banding. These factors lend some credibility to higher
snowfall amounts. Past cases have shown that global models can
underdo the lift associated with these jet streaks. The 12z HREF
indicates potential for 1" per hour rates across much of the
region late morning into the afternoon and possible 2" per hour
rates on eastern Long Island and southeast Connecticut, with
widespread 6-8 inches across the entire area with 8 to 10 inches
on eastern Long Island and southeast Connecticut on the
ensemble probability-matched mean.

Official snowfall forecast and headlines...Have elected to use
persistence with the latest snowfall package for many of the reasons
mentioned above. In the advisory area, 3 to 6 inches of snow is
forecast. Amounts on the higher end of this range are possible if
the banding is able to make it further NW, but could be on the
lower end if strongest banding stays S and E. A range from
about 5 to 9 inches for most of the warning with potential for
a bit higher across eastern Long Island and SE CT. If banding
ends up stronger and persistent for several hours, amounts
could be locally higher in spots especially across eastern
portions of the region. Amounts would fall on the lower end of
the forecast range if the banding stays more offshore or the low
tracks further away from the region.

Timing...Light snow should begin to overspread much of the region
around or shortly after daybreak. The intensity will increase
through the morning with the highest rates occurring from late
morning through about middle afternoon. The snow should quickly
taper off from west to east in the early evening.

Temperatures...Temps could briefly sneak above 32 degrees at the
coast at the onset, but otherwise should remain at or below freezing
for the duration. The forks could see temperatures 32-34 during the
peak of the system. The NYC metro should remain 30-32 and inland
areas and CT in the 20s to around 30 degrees.

Winds...No concerns with winds with the storm due to the offshore
track, but gusts 20-25 mph are possible in some of the heavier snow
bands.

The system moves away from the area Sunday evening with improving
conditions and clearing skies. Lows will be in the teens inland to
the lower and middle 20s elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A 1030 high builds into the region on Mon. This will produce fair wx
with decreasing winds. Temps blw normal with highs staying blw
freezing. Fresh snow should allow temps to drop quickly Mon ngt, but
increasing clouds are expected late as a sys approaches from the
west.

There could be some snow before daybreak Tue across extreme wrn
portions of the cwa, but the best chances for pcpn are during the
day on Tue. The 12Z model consensus was pretty good with the timing,
but there understandably remains some spread regarding the exact
placement of the low. Placement of the low Thu aftn ranges from s of
LI to nrn CT. Small in terms of distance, but large in terms of
impact. Plenty of time for this to trend in one direction or the
other, but right now pops were increased to likely, with a wintry
mix forecast for most of the area. A track further s is more snow,
further n more mix/rain. All areas should see at least a little snow
at the very onset of the pcpn. The sys exits Tue ngt, with Wed dry
and cold with arctic air bleeding into the region.

The next sys begins to arrive Thu into Fri. The models have been
consistent with this feature, so pops have been increased into the
chance category. Amplification of the h5 trof over the plains looks
to be a major player with this sys. As the deepening takes place,
the sys is drawn closer to the coast and milder air flows into the
region. For now, a blended approach has been taken, leaning on the
NBM for temps. This translates to chances for snow Thu ngt, snow or
rain on Fri, then ending as snow again Fri ngt. Dry wx next Sat
attm.

.AVIATION /21Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
High pressure will slowly build in from the SW through this
evening. Another developing low off the Mid Atlantic coast on
Sunday will then track south and east of the area through
Sunday night.

Mainly VFR through tonight. MVFR to IFR as snow begins to
develop from south to north 12Z to 15Z Sunday, first across the
NYC and Long Island terminals.

Forecast snowfall accumulations for Sunday:

BDR/ISP/GON: 6-9"
HPN: 4-7"
SWF: 3-6"

SW winds around 15kt gusting 20-25kt early, then diminishing
toward evening. Winds become light and variable overnight and
then NE less than 10kt toward morning, increasing to 10 to 15 kt
by afternoon.

Winds will weaken through this evening on the waters, but ocean
seas will remain eleBDR/ISP/GON: 6-9"vated through the first
half of the night. Conditions will briefly fall below SCA on all
waters before coming back up again on Sunday with low pressure
passing south and east of the waters. Have opted to extend the
SCA on all waters through Sunday evening, except for the waters
east of Moriches Inlet where gales are likely especially late
morning into the afternoon. A gale warning has been issued here
for Sunday. Winds will slowly fall below SCA Sunday night, but
ocean seas may remain elevated through the night.

A sca may be needed on the ocean Mon with decreasing nw winds and
subsiding seas. Passing low pres may produce sca cond on Tue, mainly
on the ocean. Winds and seas improve on Wed into Thu, then another
storm will likely bring at least sca winds and seas to all waters by
Fri.
