Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
435 AM EST Mon Nov 22 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front moves through and gets well offshore later
today. High pressure gradually builds through Tuesday night and
settles over the area on Wednesday. Another cold front moves through
by the end of the week into the weekend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Showers along a cold front will push east and get completely
offshore for the afternoon. A secondary boundary should push through
later in the day. The first boundary early on results in the wind
shift, with the second boundary resulting in more of an air mass
change heading into tonight. Cold advection takes places for this
afternoon, but really gets going too late to impact today's high
temperatures. Clouds will linger through a good portion of the day,
followed by afternoon partial clearing from west to east.
Temperatures will average a few degrees above normal with mainly
lower and middle 50s for max temperatures.
For tonight some mid and upper level clouds will linger during the
evening as the trough axis and its associated shortwave begins to
work through. Following this spoke of energy, skies should go clear
for late tonight into Tuesday morning. Temperatures at 850 mb drop
quickly due to strong CAA. Temperatures at 850 mb into Tuesday
morning will approach -8 C. Therefore a fairly cold air mass moves
in for tonight into Tuesday morning. With an advective night setting
up and the winds north of northwest, thinking that the city and NE
NJ get a bit colder typically in this scenario. Thus, the thinking
is that these area can get down to the freezing mark late tonight.
The Freeze Watch for much of the city and Hudson County, NJ
therefore has been upgraded to a Freeze Warning. The next two nights
are forecast to get to around freezing so it is likely that the
growing season officially comes to an end for the entire NYC metro.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Tuesday morning starts off as one of the coldest mornings of the
season thus far. The NW breeze will make it feel as cold as the
upper teens across far northern parts of the area, and lower and
middle 20s elsewhere. A deep NW flow will keep the area below normal
temperature wise, despite a good deal of sunshine. During the
afternoon some strat-cu is likely with a shallow layer of higher RH
at around 5 kft. This should result in a period of partly sunny
skies for the late morning and into the afternoon. Temperatures will
be running below average during the day, with highs only reaching 40
to 45 across the area, while the wind will make it feel like the 30s
all day long. For Tuesday night it remains brisk and cold with clear
skies as upper level ridging continues to work in. Temperatures
should fall back into the 20s, with lower 30s once again in the NYC
metro. As high pressure continues to build in the pressure gradient
will begin to diminish slightly late at night and into Wednesday.
On Wednesday high pressure will settle over the area resulting in
lighter winds and plenty of sunshine. Temperatures should be a few
degrees warmer, but will likely not budge the middle and upper 40s,
which is still a touch below normal.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
No major changes to the long term forecast.
High pressure will dominate Wednesday night through Thursday before
the next frontal system approaches late Thursday night into the day
on Friday. A vigorous shortwave digs a trough over the Great Lakes
by Thursday night and into Friday which forces a low pressure system
to our north. The associated cold front moves through the area
sometime late Thursday night into the day on Friday, bringing with
it a chance of showers. Some locations across the interior could be
cold enough to see rain mix with snow. Thereafter, the large-scale
trough meanders over the area with the low becoming cutoff. While
the forecast remains dry for now, will have to watch for some
lingering showers on Saturday and Sunday in the vicinity of the
cutoff low.
After slightly above normal temperatures on Thanksgiving Day,
temperatures will be noticeably cooler for Friday into the weekend
behind the cold front. By the weekend highs will remain in the low
to mid 40s with overnight lows falling below freezing for much of
the area.
&&
.AVIATION /10Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A cold front will cross the region this morning. High pressure then
builds into the area this afternoon into this evening.
Periods of light rain showers will continue through this morning,
tapering off from west to east between 12-16Z. City terminals should
see rain come to an end between 14-15Z. Ceilings continue to vary
between VFR and MVFR, but these should gradually lower to MVFR at
all terminals as showers overspread the area. Visibilities will
generally remain VFR, although can't rule out the potential for MVFR
in any steadier areas of rain. VFR conditions are then expected to
return at all terminals by afternoon.
WSW winds 5-10 kt early this morning will shift to the W and then NW
by 16-18Z. Speeds will increase to 10-15 kt, with gusts 20-25 kt.
There is some potential for gusts greater than 25 kt late this
afternoon into this evening, primarily at city terminals. Winds then
gradually decrease tonight, although 15-20 kt gusts will linger into
the overnight at coastal terminals.
NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...
Amendments possible this morning for changing ceilings/visibilities.
Winds could gust to 25 kt or higher late this afternoon into this
evening.
.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY...
.Tonight...VFR. NW winds near 10 to 15 kt along coast with gusts to
near 20 kt. Winds and gusts diminish inland.
.Tuesday...VFR. NW winds near 15 kt with gusts near 20 kt. Winds and
gusts subside at night.
.Wednesday and Thursday...VFR.
.Thursday night...Chance of rain and snow showers inland, slight
chance of rain showers along coast. MVFR to IFR possible.
.Friday...Chance rain showers. Chance of rain and snow showers
inland during the morning. Mainly dry conditions forecast at night.
MVFR to IFR possible, mainly during the day. NW winds near 10-15 kt
with gusts up to near 20 kt afternoon into night.

.MARINE...
Marginal small craft conditions persist on the ocean waters through
much of today, with the winds increasing a bit later this afternoon
into the this evening. Small Craft conditions will then resume
across most of the waters except perhaps for Western LI Sound
tonight. On Tuesday all waters will experience small craft wind
gusts at some point. The pressure gradient should then gradually
begin to diminish Tuesday night into Wednesday as high pressure
draws closer. Small craft conditions are likely to continue on the
ocean waters into a portion of Wednesday as the non-ocean waters
will go to sub SCA conditions Tuesday night into early Wednesday
morning.
Ocean seas will continue to subside Wednesday night into Thursday as
high pressure builds across the waters. SCA conditions are then
possible for Friday into the weekend as both winds and seas increase
in response to a passing cold front and tightening pressure gradient
over the region.
