Area forecast discussion, Jun 26, 2:20 PM EDT, 1 hour 25 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New York NY 220 PM EDT Sat Jun 26 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure over the western Atlantic will remain the dominant weather feature through next week. This will allow heat and humidity to build early next week and persist into late week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... Additional shower activity has developed along a corridor from the NJ coast up into the Lower Hudson Valley. This is a result of a fog/stratus boundary from earlier that is provided the lift/convergence. Instability is weak and thunder is unlikely. Any rainfall should be short-lived. Cloud cover varies from the stratus along the coast to the instability CU associated inland with the showers. There will be some breaks with sun, but a tougher call along the immediate south shore of LI and SE CT. Even some fog lingering across those locations. This has resulted in cooler temps and thus have knocked highs down a few degree in spots. && .SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... Any showers and thunderstorms will quickly die off with the loss of daytime heating after the sun sets. Warm and humid conditions will continue tonight as low stratus and fog will likely affect the area once again. temperatures will only drop to the lower 70s in the New York City metro area, 60s are expected elsewhere. The warming trend will continue Sunday into Monday as the upper level high and surface high remain in place and strengthen, allowing for continued height rises. Temperatures on sunday will rise into the lower 90s across northeast New Jersey and upper 80s in the New York City metro area and locations north and west. Again, a more southerly flow across Long Island and Connecticut will keep these area slightly cooler. Heat index values on Sunday will rise to the middle to upper 90s, mainly across northeast New Jersey and portions of the Lower Hudson Valley, with isolated middle 90s across New York City and portions of the Lower Hudson Valley. However, model guidance in regards to dew points may be a degree or two too cool, and there is the possibility of more widespread heat index values of middle to upper 90s into the New York City area. Will have to monitor the potential for Heat Advisory for the city, but it is more likely for northeast New Jersey at this point. Warmer temperatures are expected on Monday, with highs in the middle to upper 90s across New York City, northeast New Jersey, and the lower Hudson Valley. Heat index values may reach the lower 100s across much of the forecast area, and Heat Advisories will likely be needed across the entire tri-state (except for perhaps the Twin Forks of Long Island and southeastern New London) for Monday and Tuesday. There is the potential that Excessive Heat Warnings are needed for portions of northeast New Jersey on Monday, but confidence is too low this far out and will continue to be monitored. Weak thermal troughs will develop Monday and Tuesday, with diurnally forced showers and thunderstorms that will develop both days, dissipating as the sun sets. Again, coverage will be isolated. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Surface high pressure over the western Atlantic will continue to be the main feature in the weather pattern for most of the the long term period. This will however slowly weaken with each day as heights aloft fall. Thermal troughs setting up nearby will be the main focus for potential diurnal convection through Thursday, then surface low taking shape over the eastern Great Lakes/Ohio Valley Regions may have more of an influence bringing shower and thunderstorm chances here on Friday. Generally speaking, Thursday and Friday will feature the higher chances of rainfall as models agree that deeper moisture will be present by this time, and with falling heights, less of a cap to overcome for convection. Regarding temperatures and heat indices, 850mb temps on Tuesday progged around 19C, and maybe slightly cooler on Wednesday. Wednesday also has a better chance of more cloud cover, so expecting Tuesday to be the hotter of the 2 days, but not by much. NBM deterministic with a few minor local adjustments looked representative for high temps given this setup along with SW to S winds. Dewpoint/RH profile up through 850mb looks similar both days along with similar surface winds, and not expecting much mixing out of surface dewpoints both days. Heat index values for both days are expected to reach advisory criteria for most of the forest area - mid 90s to around 100. More cloud cover and cooler temps aloft translate to cooler highs and heat indices for Thursday and Friday - remaining below advisory criteria. && .AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Offshore high pressure will dominate through the period. Conditions have improved to VFR across the NYC terminals. KSWF and KGON have improved to MVFR while KISP remains LIFR. Conditions at KSWF/KGON/KISP will show some improvement, mostly likely to VFR for a period late this afternoon or early evening. Conditions are expected to go back down again tonight mainly IFR or MVFR. Can not rule out some LIFR. There are some showers around this afternoon, have included a TEMPO to cover this. Best timing for showers will be through 20z. Winds will be from the south this afternoon 10-15 kts with some occasional gusts to 20kt. Winds fall below 10 kt tonight, and increase once again on Sunday with gusts possible again in the late morning and afternoon. ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty... Timing of flight category changes may be off my +/- 1-2 hours. Amendments possible for changing flight categories. .OUTLOOK FOR 18Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY... .Sunday-Tuesday...MVFR or lower sunday morning, then mainly VFR. A chance of afternoon showers/tstms, mainly NW of the NYC terminals. .Wednesday-Thursday...Mainly VFR. A better chance of showers and Thunderstorms across most of the area terminals. Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts, can be found at: https:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90 && .MARINE... Marine Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for the central and eastern sound, Peconic and Gardiner's Bays, the eastern ocean, and the south shore bays until 11 am. There is some uncertainty as to when the fog will burn off, and the advisory may need to be extended into the early afternoon, especially for eastern areas. Will continue to monitor for this possibility. Fog will affect the waters again tonight, and there is the potential for dense fog once again tonight. Typical increased southerly flow near the opening of the harbor may see occasional wind gusts of 25 kt this afternoon across the western ocean zone. Ocean waters will see occasional gusts to 25 kt on Sunday and waves may briefly touch 5 ft on the ocean waters Sunday night. However, was not confident enough at this time to issue a SCA for the short time frame and low coverage for both winds and seas today and Sunday. Although winds/seas should remain below SCA criteria, a prolonged period of S flow could produce near SCA conds on the ocean waters at times early next week. && .HYDROLOGY...
