What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this freeze warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this freeze warning went out at Nov 2, 1:48 AM EDT, 1 hour 53 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Nov 2, 1:48 AM EDT, 1 hour 53 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
148 AM EDT Tue Nov 2 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds to the south of the region through Tuesday
night. A weak cold front passes through the region Tuesday
evening. High pressure will build across the region by mid week.
A coastal low pressure system may affect the region Friday
night and into the weekend with high pressure building back for
the beginning of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Temperatures across much of the area outside of the New York
City metropolitan area continue to lower quickly as winds
remain near calm with higher clouds slow to move into the
region. Updated for current conditions and trends.

With mainly clear skies across the region, high thin clouds
were slowly moving into the lower Hudson Valley, and
northeastern New Jersey. Increasing clouds late tonight will
stabilize temperatures. Updated temperatures and dew points into
Tuesday morning to account for the latest trends.

An upper low across eastern Canada will continue to lift
northward, while additional shortwave energy dropping into the
backside of the upper trough across the Midwest, will allow for
further amplification. The latter of which will send a cold
front toward the region on Tuesday.

Ahead of the amplifying trough, mid and high level clouds will
work in from the southwest, mainly after midnight. Skies are
forecast to become mostly cloudy by daybreak. There is
uncertainty as to how quickly temperatures drop the first half
of the night before the insulating effect of the clouds are
felt. At this time, lows are forecast to drop into the upper
30s inland and across the Pine Barrens region of LI and in the
40s elsewhere. This is nearly seasonable.

Light NW winds will become light and variable by daybreak.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
A cold front approaches from the Great Lakes on Tuesday. Ahead
of the upper trough, mid level warm advection and some jet
energy (in close proximity) could produce a few showers, mainly
across LI/NYC metro during the afternoon/early evening hours.
The cloud cover will keep daytime highs in the lower to mid 50s,
about 5 degrees below normal. W/SW winds may gust 15-20 mph in
the afternoon.

The cold front passes through during the early evening hours
Tuesday with another reinforcing shot of cooler air. Clearing in
the evening combined with light NW winds and drier air will
allow for a colder night with many locations dropping into the
30s. The NYC metro will be in the lower 40s. The best chance for
freezing temperatures at this time will be across interior NE
NJ, portions of the Lower Hudson Valley, and interior SW CT.
Thus, a freeze watch has been posted for these locations. A
smaller area of sub-freezing temperatures is possible across the
Pine Barrens region of LI.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Canadian high pressure gradually building in for the middle of the
week. The combination of light winds and clearing skies Wednesday
night should allow for strong radiational cooling conditions away
from urban centers, and coldest temperatures of the fall season so
far. Widespread temperatures in the upper 20s Wednesday night across
the interior of NE NJ, Lower Hudson and S CT may result in the
potential for freeze and then hard freeze. Similar conditions for
pine barrens of LI. Note: NWS NY frost/freeze program ends for these
interior area on November 4th (2 weeks after average first freeze).

For the coastal plain, temperatures in the lower to mid 30s
Wednesday night, outside of NYC/NJ metro. This will bring
likelihood for widespread frost, and potential for localized
freeze.

High pressure dominates the area for Thursday with temperatures
5 to 10 degrees below average as highs will only be in the
upper 40s and low 50s. Meanwhile, an area of low pressure will
be moving to the northeast offshore of the Mid- Atlantic region.
Latest models have trended further offshore with this low
pressure system which will result in drier conditions for the
weekend. Opted at this time to leave just a slight chance PoPs
Friday and Saturday timeframe. High pressure builds back for the
beginning of the week.

Otherwise, temperatures will be generally below average with
highs each day in the upper 40s to low 50s through Saturday.
Highs Sunday and Monday will be in the middle 50s. Lows will be
in the upper 30s and 40s through the entire period with Interior
locations being the colder spots.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure will build in from the west through the
overnight, and then to the south of the terminals Tuesday. A
reinforcing weak cold front will pass through the region Tuesday
evening.

VFR. Ceilings lower Tuesday afternoon, generally 3500 to 4000
feet. There is a chance that ceilings at the coastal terminals
briefly become high end MVFR (3000 feet) late in the afternoon
with a slight chance of light showers or sprinkles.

Winds will be light and variable tonight to light NW. Winds
become more westerly 10 kt or less Tuesday. Depending on the
timing of a cold front, winds inland become NW toward 00Z
Wednesday.

.MARINE...
No changes to winds and seas at this time.

W to NW winds will continue to gradually diminish through
tonight.

High pressure builds to the south through Tuesday with an
approaching cold front. W/SW winds of 10-15 kt may gust up to 20
kt on Tuesday. Cold front passes through Tuesday evening with a
diminishing NW flow. Sub-SCA conditions are forecast during this
time.

Below SCA conditions expected through the end of the week.
There is the potential for a coastal low to impact the area
waters resulting in elevated seas and marginally gusty winds
Friday night and into Saturday which may result in SCA
conditions on the oceans.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
No hydrologic impacts expected through the forecast period.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
An approaching Spring tide will have astronomical tides running
as little as a few tenths below minor flood thresholds for our
most vulnerable coastal communities mid to late week. Cannot
rule out some localized and brief minor coastal flooding in
these spots with the Wednesday morning high tide, but there is
better potential with the Thursday and Friday morning high
tides dependent on development of offshore low pressure.
