What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this excessive heat warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this excessive heat warning went out at Aug 9, 9:40 PM EDT, 6 hours 13 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Aug 9, 9:40 PM EDT, 6 hours 13 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
940 PM EDT Mon Aug 9 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will continue weakening tonight as it moves away
from Long Island tonight. A warm front will approach from the
west early on Tuesday, and then lift well north of the region
late Tuesday and Tuesday night. High pressure in the Western
Atlantic near Bermuda will dominate through mid to late week. A
cold front moves through the region Friday night into Saturday
and remains offshore Sunday. High pressures builds in for
Monday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Showers have largely ended across the region this evening. Low
pressure south of Long Island has drifted further east and will
continue to weaken as it does so through the rest of the night.
It will still through moisture back at the area and a brief
light shower cannot be ruled out across eastern Long Island and
southeast Connecticut. Will also have to watch for the
redevelopment of low clouds and potential for patchy fog. There
are mixed signals in the guidance, but if low clouds become
widespread then the chance for fog likely ends up lower and
confined to outlying areas.

A warm front will begin to approach from the west late tonight.
This boundary will bring a change to our weather as far as a
return to heat and high humidity into the mid week. This
boundary will also bring the chance of showers and possible a
thunderstorm or two late tonight into Tuesday morning, mainly
west of the NYC metro.

On Tuesday the climb in temperatures will ensue. Temperatures at 5k
ft (850mb) get to about 16 C late in the day. That should be enough
to get daytime maxes into the middle and upper 80s, with some urban
areas reaching 90. The more noticeable change will be the nudge up
in the humidity with dew point readings likely averaging out in the
lower 70s. For now held off on heat advisories as heat indices
fall short of criteria with heat indices only reaching around 90
or in the lower 90s across the metropolitan areas for Tuesday
afternoon. A thermal trough is expected to develop with more of
a southerly flow. This may act as a boundary to force some
convection late in the day, mainly across western sections. For
Tuesday night any scattered convection should die out with the
loss of heating. The humidity will climb a touch further into
Wednesday morning as the overall southerly flow gets a stronger
grip on the area. Lows Tuesday night into Wednesday morning will
likely see lows in the 70s widespread across the area, with
perhaps some upper 70s into parts of the metro.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
The heat will get into full swing on Wednesday. Analysis of
mass fields indicate 500 mb heights getting to around 590 dm and
850 mb temperatures getting to 19-20 C. Also across western
most areas the low level winds are progged to have slightly more
of a westerly component. There is a good chance that heat
advisory criteria will get met into Wednesday afternoon based on
the latest heat index values across NE NJ and maybe even NYC
with heat index values progged in the lower 100s across NE NJ,
and the middle and upper 90s across much of the NYC metro, with
even hotter conditions expected the following day. As far as
diurnally driven convection, overall things looks similar to
Tuesday where a low level convergence zone sets up via a thermal
trough once again. The exact positioning of this low level
convergence zone may be positioned slightly further to the east,
but this is a detail that will have to be ironed out in
subsequent forecast packages. For now chance POPs are the way to
go for any convective activity. Any storms would likely be more
of the pulse variety and not long lived as shear and
organizational parameters look rather weak. The primary concern
would be downdraft winds and brief heavy rainfall with any
storms that could be potentially become briefly severe.

For Wednesday night any storms would likely die off during the
evening hours. A warm and muggy night will be on tap with minimum
temperatures will be in the 70s, with middle and upper 70s
across the metro. Any relief for Wednesday night from the heat
will be minimized due to the high humidity, which will be driven
by dew point readings in the 70s region wide.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The warm and humid weather will continue Thursday into Friday, as
western Atlantic high pressure dominates. Afternoon showers and
thunderstorms will be possible as the atmosphere destabilizes each
afternoon, and with the storms translating east, storms potentially
linger into the night time hours. With high precipitable water values
some storms may produce locally moderate to heavy rainfall. Highs
Thursday and Friday will be in the lower to mid 90s, with heat
indices in the mid 90s to 104. In the urban corridor of northeastern
New Jersey and into portions of New York City heat indices may
briefly reach 105 both Thursday and Friday. Continues to go slightly
above the NBM, as 850 mb temperatures remain 19C to 21C degrees. So,
advisory will likely be needed Thursday and Friday, there is the
potential for a heat watch where heat indices reach 105.

The timing of a cold front, and convection from the previous days,
will impact temperatures for Saturday. As of now, temperatures and
dew points will be slightly lower, with borderline heat advisory
conditions in the northeast New Jersey urban corridor, and across
New York City.

The front becomes nearly stationary just east and south of the
region Saturday into Sunday, with the chance of additional showers. A
cooler and drier airmass pushes the front south for Monday.

&&

.AVIATION /02Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Low pressure south of Long Island continues weakening through
tonight as it drifts away from the area. A warm front approaches
late tonight and lifts to the north Tuesday morning.

Mainly VFR through midnight. MVFR ceilings should begin to
redevelop during the early Tuesday morning hours across Long
Island and southern Connecticut terminals, and could lower to
IFR or LIFR around day break. MVFR to IFR ceilings are also
possible over NYC terminals early Tuesday. There may also be
some patchy fog development late tonight into Tuesday morning
at outlying terminals such as KGON and KHPN. Flight categories
improve to VFR from around 12z to 15z from west to east.

There may be a few showers with the warm front Tuesday morning
from NYC terminals on west. A thunderstorm cannot be completely
ruled out, but this looks isolated at this time. Showers and
thunderstorms are possible in the late Tuesday afternoon and
early evening west of the Hudson River.

Wind become light and variable tonight. A light SE flow develops
Tuesday morning and slowly increases into the afternoon. S sea
breezes are likely near the coast with winds 10-15 kt possible,
especially late in the day. Winds should begin to weaken Tuesday
evening.

   NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...

Amendments are likely tonight for flight categories as there
remains uncertainty with ceilings late tonight into Tuesday
morning.

A few showers are possible from around 08z to 13z. A brief
thunderstorm cannot be ruled out, but have left mention out of
the TAF due to expected isolated coverage.

.OUTLOOK FOR 00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...
.Tuesday night...A chance of thunderstorms in the early evening,
mainly west of the Hudson River. MVFR or lower possible
overnight in ceilings, especially at outlying terminals.
.Wednesday through Saturday...Mainly VFR. Chance of afternoon
and evening in showers and thunderstorms with MVFR.

.MARINE...
A weak pressure gradient will remain across the waters tonight.
The pressure gradient then will increase a touch going into
Tuesday afternoon, especially for the western most ocean waters
where marginal SCA conditions are possible with a few occasional
gusts of 20 to 25 kt. The southerly flow will continue through
mid week resulting in gusts to around mainly 20 kt on the ocean
and perhaps some of the southern near shore waters at times into
Wednesday and Thursday. Thus mainly sub SCA conditions are
anticipated throughout. By Thursday and Thursday night ocean
seas will climb closer to 4 ft and may briefly reach 5 ft on the
eastern ocean waters. Late Thursday night into Friday the
gradient will relax slightly with sub SCA conditions expected.
However, tstms thru the period will be capable of producing
hazardous wx at times on the waters, especially towards Thursday
through Saturday. Otherwise, winds and seas will be below SCA
levels Saturday.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
No hydrologic impacts are expected through tonight.

With high PWATS near 2 inches, Tuesday through Friday night, any
thunderstorms will be capable of producing locally heavy downpours.
Localized flooding in poor drainage areas will be a possibility.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There is a moderate rip current risk at the ocean beaches of New
York City, and Nassau County, and a low rip current risk at the
ocean beaches of Suffolk County Tuesday.

There is a moderate rip current risk at the ocean beaches
Wednesday.
