.SYNOPSIS...Cooling trend will continue through the remainder of
the week, with increasing night and morning low clouds and patchy
fog. Near to slightly below normal daytime temperatures will then
persist into the upcoming weekend, along with mainly dry weather
conditions. However, some drizzle will be possible along the coast
late Friday night and Saturday morning.

.DISCUSSION...As of 2:10 PM PDT Wednesday...Water vapor imagery
continues to show a weak disturbance moving into the Pacific
Northwest this afternoon with a secondary wave clipping far
Northern California. As a result, high pressure is flattening over
the California, with onshore flow returning and an established
marine layer along the coast. Temperatures are running several
degrees cooler today as well, with inland areas seeing the
greatest cooling.
The marine layer will spread inland once again tonight, with
patchy fog developing once again across the inland valleys. The
Fort Ord Profiler shows that it is currently around 1500 feet
deep, and may see a slight deepening in response to the disturb
tonight. This may result in some drizzle possible along the
immediate coast, but not really expecting much. Tomorrow and
Friday will also be repeats of today, with some minor additional
cooling to inland areas, and morning low clouds and fog giving way
to predominately sunny skies.
A trough of low pressure will then dig along the West Coast for
late Friday through Saturday. The ensembles continue to indicate
that some light rain may be possible with this upper level low.
However, given that the majority of the moisture is within the
boundary layer, believe it is picking up on the coastal drizzle.
Have added drizzle to the forecast, as the marine layer should
rapidly deepen to around 4000 feet Friday night into Saturday
morning. This is the best chance of rain for the period, even
though the models are hinting at some instability as well.
However, there are two main limiting factors when it come to any
thunderstorms or even real shower activity at this time. One, the
upper level moisture. And two, the dry layer between the boundary
layer and the moisture aloft. Therefore, if any showers or
thunderstorms develop, think that any rain would likely evaporate
before hitting the ground. Although we could not completely rule
them out, just think that the convective inhibition will likely
overrule the instability at this time.
Temperatures will remain seasonal through the weekend, with
predominately dry conditions prevail. Some slight warming is

.AVIATION...As of 11:15 AM PDT Wednesday...For the 18z TAFs. Much
of the marine stratus has cleared out of our terminals as VFR
conditions prevail for this afternoon...the only exception is
lingering MVFR cigs near MRY which should quickly clear out.
Light to moderate onshore flow today. Expect a return of the
marine stratus tonight with a similar pattern of IFR/LIFR as what
we saw last night into this morning. Stratus should move inland
around KSNS and KMRY around 03Z and head into the SF Bay and KSTS
after 06Z. Terminals that may only have brief cigs or may escape
the stratus altogether include: KAPC, KLVK, and KSJC.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR and onshore winds up to 15 kts this
afternoon. Low clouds will return to the SF Bay late tonight.
Expect cigs at KSFO around 11Z and then scattering out by 18z on
Thursday.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR conditions this afternoon into early
evening. Models show the stratus returning to the terminals around
03Z with IFR/LIFR conditions through 18z on Thurs.

.MARINE...As of 11:06 AM PDT Wednesday...The waters have light,
mixed northwest and southerly swells with light northwest winds
today and Thursday. As the next system approaches the waters late
Thursday into early Friday, winds will increase over the northern
outer waters generating steep, fresh swell making for hazardous
conditions for smaller vessels into the weekend.
