.SYNOPSIS...A warming trend will continue through the weekend,
with Sunday expected to be the warmest day. Cooling will begin on
Monday, mainly in coastal areas. More widespread cooling is
forecast for Tuesday as temperatures return to seasonal averages.
Rain is not expected through Friday.

.DISCUSSION...as of 12:59 PM PDT Saturday...Despite a Gloomy
start to the day with widespread stratus, this afternoon is
shaping up to be pretty nice. The morning low clouds were pretty
quick to erode across the interior, but still linger along the
immediate coast. Ample sunshine, warming airmass, building 500 mb
heights, and offshore flow are resulting in much warmer
temperatures today. Latest 24 hour trends indicate many locations
are running 3-5 degrees warmer than yesterday and expect that
trend to continue through the rest of the afternoon. A few
interior locations still have a shot at reaching the mid 80s. One
extra item of note this afternoon are some cumulus clouds popping
up over S San Benito County this afternoon. Nothing showing up on
radar yet, but enough lift to generate some cu.
Light to locally moderate offshore flow is still projected for
tonight. The most notable locations will be over the N Bay Mts
and E Bay Hills with mild temperatures, lower RH, and breezy to
gusty NE winds. The offshore flow combined with building 500 mb
heights will help to suppress the marine layer with clouds
confined closer to the coast.
An upper level ridge currently to the west will build over the
region on Sunday. Continued offshore flow with building high
pressure will lead to another mild afternoon, especially across
the interior. Expecting Sunday to be a touch warmer than today,
but by only a few degrees. 80s and possibly approaching 90 across
the interior will be possible on Sunday. As noted on the previous
discussion, the challenge/lower confidence portion of the
forecast will be the transition from the interior to the coast
temp wise. Hi-res models still show a seabreeze on Sunday, which
will keep warmer temperature potential lower. Any brief pause in
the seabreeze or burst of offshore flow will result in a quick
uptick of temperatures.
The warmer weather and ridge of high pressure will end on Monday
as a disturbance begins to develop off the PacNW Coast. Further
cooling is expected on Tuesday with increasing night/morning
clouds. Aforementioned mentioned disturbance develops into an
upper low and takes aim at NorCal late Tuesday and down the Sierra
on Wednesday. Models have been hinting at a few showers possible,
but these showers are most likely N and E of the Bay Area.
Forecast will remain dry for now.
Speaking of precip, much needed precip may arrive late in the
week and next weekend. Confidence is increasing that a storm
system will bring some precip to NorCal and possibly into the Bay
Area late Friday/Saturday. There is a definitely some spread
between the deterministic and ensemble weather models. It doesn't
look overly promising, but will at least carry a slight chance
for showers in the North Bay. Much farther down the road all eyes
turn to the west as a typhoon in the WPAC makes its march
eastward. Really long range models show some moisture traversing
the Pacific and reaching the West Coast by the end of the month.

.AVIATION...As of 10:40 AM PDT Saturday...For the 18Z TAFs. Robust
overnight marine layer compressed somewhat by building ridge with
fairly uniform IFR-MVFR OVC cigs overnight through the coast and most
of the nearshore valleys. Marine layer has eroded rapidly since
16Z and widespread VFR expected by 18Z for all terminals aside
from Half Moon Bay. High pressure peaks today and will compress
the marine layer further through the next 24 hours as it has
already done across the North Bay into this morning. For tonight,
weak low level wind shear is possible out of the NNE at 20-25kt
from 03-08Z. The marine layer will be extremely compressed down
to the 250-600 foot range and bring generally brief FEW (Bay
Area) SCT- BKN (Monterey Bay) type cigs to the coastally
influenced TAF sites into the predawn hours before mixing
out/retreating offshore by 15Z. HREF ensembles are running at
about 60% of this scenario occurring while the local WRF is biased
towards the drier scenario, thus good confidence of ceiling
heights but low confidence on ceiling coverage Sunday morning.
Otherwise, breezy to occasionally onshore winds expected today
through the coastal gaps with lighter winds elsewhere.
Vicinity of KSFO...Rapid clearing has brought VFR for the morning.
Onshore winds will become breezy Saturday afternoon, reaching
15-20kt late afternoon/early evening. VFR expected Saturday into
Sunday, with a drier airmass filtering in, but may see a few very
low level clouds in the pre dawn hours.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Marine layer will remain banked along
coast and may ebb and flow near KMRY through the day, but
otherwise VFR. Breezy WNW winds 10-15 kt return in the afternoon.
For tonight, compressed marine layer at a few hundred will remain
in near proximity of terminals and is expected to ebb over them
for a few to several hours into Sunday morning. While low
confidence, most likely scenario for now will be BKN/OVC cigs at
200-500 feet through 7-14Z Sun.

.MARINE...as of 10:32 AM PDT Saturday...Breezy northwest winds
across the waters today, locally stronger and gusty along the
coastal jets south of Point Arena, Pigeon Point, and Point Sur
today. Winds will ease along the coast into early Sunday morning
before the gusty coastal jets return by Sunday afternoon. Then,
stronger northwest winds will persist north of Point Reyes and
the Farallones from late Sunday through mid week next week. Gale
force gusts may be possible in the northern waters by late Monday.
These stronger winds will produce steep to very steep wind waves
and hazardous conditions for smaller vessels. A moderate
northwest swell prevails through the period with a smaller longer
period southerly swell.
