.SYNOPSIS...Cloudy skies overnight will keep temperatures fairly
mild. Dry weather continues Wednesday as a low passes over far
Southern California with dry conditions into Friday. A cold front
arrives Friday night into early Saturday with a chance of light
rain. Drying but cool Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Long range
for next week looks cool and showery with a trough along the West
Coast.

.DISCUSSION...as of 9:25 PM PST Tuesday...No forecast updates
planned for this evening. Plenty of mid and high clouds over the
region in association with the weak low well west of Point
Conception. Those clouds will keep overnight lows from getting too
cold with mainly 40s except some 30s in the North Bay where
clouds are thinner with more breaks. That low will move onshore
near San Diego on Weds keeping any precip well to our south. The
impact around here will be cool onshore breezes and mostly cloudy
skies early in the day with increasing sunshine by afternoon. With
our cool SST the onshore winds will keep the beaches cool with
60s inland.
That low will eject towards the Four-Corners region on Thursday as
high pressure briefly noses over Norcal keeping the weather dry
and seasonal.
Friday remains dry but with increasing southerly winds and clouds
ahead of a well defined cold front and upper trough. NCEP reports
that 32 drop sondes were successfully dropped into the source
region of this moisture plume as part of the Atmospheric River
Recon project. This gives added confidence in some of the model
solutions and consistency we are starting to see. The moisture
plume on the GFS is progged to be around 0.50-0.75 TPW by Friday
evening, not overly impressive. This is consistent then with low
forecast rainfall amounts of generally 0.50-0.75 coastal hills
and quarter inch lower elevations with 0.10 for the interior
valleys. Timing is looking like Friday evening for the North Bay
then rapidly spreading southward overnight into early Saturday
morning with nearly all showers ending by 15-18z Saturday. That
will leave a cool but mainly dry weekend for Saturday afternoon
into Sunday.
Light rain could return as early as Sunday night but more likely
into Monday/Tuesday. Trends for next week look positive in terms
of rainfall chances. Not seeing any signs of overly wet systems
with AR taps. In contrast it looks to be a cold trough off the
coast with periods of showers through the week. Rains will be
beneficial and could add up to a few inches if things pan out. As
we get into March will have to be looking for t-storm potential
with small hail events as 700 mb temps will plummet to -10 to -14
c for much of next week. So no drought busters but some hope for
some beneficial rains next week.
Latest long range trends show that trough ejecting by around March
11-12th with a brief ridge followed by potentially another cold
trough as the PNA is progged to remain negative by the latest gfs
and ecmwf weeklies through much of March.

.AVIATION...as of 9:46 PM PST Tuesday...For the 06Z TAFs. High
clouds obscure the satellite view of the Bay Area and the Central
Coast; but no low clouds are being observed my ground instruments
and none are expected overnight. Winds will be light, but as a
surface trough approaches on Wednesday, winds will shift to the
WSW. Winds will diminish after 00Z, but models are still hinting
at the possibility of some low clouds increasing. Given the high
clouds expected and the southerly wind component, only FEW to SCT
was added to the end of the TAFs, but will be monitored as new
model data comes in and VFR otherwise.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR through the TAF period, despite high clouds
overhead. Winds over producing what models indicated by remaining
breezy at this hour, but are still expected to diminish
overnight. Winds will increase Wednesday out of the WSW. Models
are still hinting at a few lower clouds moving into the but there
remains low confidence in impacts to the terminal. Winds become
variable Wednesday night.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Winds are diminishing, but a few moderate
breezes still funneling through the Salinas Valley, expecting to
subside tonight. High clouds aloft keep VFR through the morning.
As winds increase Wednesday afternoon, models are showing NW
farther inland, but a more southerly component for terminals
closer to the coast as the next surface boundary approaches. FEW/SCT
low-to-mid level clouds after 00Z, with a chance for brief BKN,
but low confidence in it so it was left out the TAF.

.MARINE...as of 08:47 PM PST Tuesday...Light to locally moderate
breezy northwest winds continue this evening and overnight.
Slightly breezier conditions are expected Wednesday afternoon as a
low pressure system passes to the south. Moderate northwest swell
is bringing hazardous seas conditions for smaller vessels over
the outer waters into the morning. Winds will increase and turn
southerly on Thursday ahead of the next frontal system set to
arrive Friday into Saturday. Moderate northwest swell persists
through Thursday, when a longer period northwest swell arrives.
