.DISCUSSION...as of 01:51 AM PST Wednesday...
Today and Tonight:
Broad cyclonic flow prevails across the western CONUS as a digging
shortwave translates through the mean trough before reaching SoCal
this evening. Surface low pressure attendant to this upper feature
should drop equatorward along the Central Coast this afternoon and
evening with an associated frontal zone remaining near the coast.
This will set the stage for another day with scattered to numerous
showers along with the small possibility for a thunderstorm or
two.
Moisture channel imagery early this morning revealed a shortwave
impulse over the Pacific Northwest which is embedded within broad
longwave troughing over the Western States. A surface warm front was
analyzed just offshore, with the elevated portion of the frontal
zone extending just inland along the Central Coast. Scattered fast-
moving showers were ongoing within the associated warm advection
regime with light to moderate rain occurring. A consensus of the
convection allowing models suggest that these showers should
continue pushing inland across the region through the mid morning
hours with a possible brief lull thereafter.
Another round of showers is anticipated through the late morning and
afternoon hours as the upstream shortwave pushes through the region.
This upper feature should excite the stalled frontal boundary
offshore with a surface wave/low pressure area dropping south along
the coast. Current projections center this low pressure area west of
San Francisco around 10 AM and near Monterey by around 4 PM.
Therefore expect shower chances to peak around the Golden Gate
through late morning to early afternoon and for Monterey and Big
Sur during the afternoon to early evening hours. Scattered
instability showers may then linger after the low passes with
precipitation generally ending for the North Bay around 2-4 PM,
around SFO by 4-7 PM, Monterey by 7-10 PM, and Big Sur by around
10 PM-12 AM.
The greatest rain totals from this system are expected across the
southern portion of our area. Forecast storm total amounts through
tonight are as follows:
* North and East Bays: 0.10 - 0.25 inches
* San Francisco and South Bay: 0.50 - 1.00 inches
* Santa Cruz Mountains: 0.50 - 1.50 inches
* Monterey Bay and Salinas Valley: 0.25 - 0.75 inches
* Big Sur and Santa Lucias: 0.75 to 2.00 inches (isolated higher
amounts possible)
These amounts should be light enough to prevent widespread water-
related impacts. However given wet antecedent conditions can't rule
out street flooding and the potential for shallow landslides
today. This potential appears to be greatest south of the Golden
Gate, with a possible focus over the Santa Cruz and Santa Lucia
ranges where higher rain rates may at least briefly occur. These
higher rates could impact the Dolan and Willow wildfire burn
areas at times, but at the moment they appear too light/transient
to reach debris flow thresholds. However we will continue to
monitor this possibility as conditions evolve today.
Given increasing subtropical moisture, steepening lapse rates with
the thermal trough, and low-level frictional convergence/forcing for
ascent from the nearby low pressure area/frontal zone can't rule out
a few loosely organized thunderstorm clusters during the late
morning to early afternoon hours. However only sporadic (at best)
lightning production is anticipated given the shallow nature of the
convective cores. This potential is greatest over the local waters
and along the immediate coast where the better reservoir of most
unstable CAPE should reside. So while lightning is far from a sure
bet, lowering freezing levels do suggest some potential for small
hail production in convective showers this afternoon. Waterspouts
are also possible over the local waters offshore from
approximately San Francisco south to Big Sur.
Given the surface warm front is expected to remain just offshore
high temperatures today should remain on the cool side. In fact far
inland areas, the North Bay Valleys, and higher elevations are
unlikely to get out of the 40s this afternoon. Closer to the coast
and bays temperatures may moderate a bit with highs reaching into
the lower 50s. A few spots from Monterey towards Big Sur could reach
into the mid to upper 50s given their closer proximity to the warm
front.
Given partial clearing and cold advection tonight lows should drop
into the 30s for most areas, with the exception of areas near the
immediate coast which should remain in the lower 40s.
Thursday through Sunday:
A shift in the upper pattern should evolve by late week into the
weekend as upper ridging builds across the west. This will support
surface high pressure centering over the Great Basin and branching
into our area. This should keep our area rain-free during this
portion of the forecast period. Forecast models remain on the cool
side for temperatures, with some chilly nights ahead. In fact,
calibrated 50th percentile temperature forecasts from the National
Blend of Models suggest a decent potential for lows on Friday and
Saturday nights to dip into the upper 20s and 30s for many areas
(potentially even for the urban/coastal areas). So it appears there
is another decent cold spell on the horizon.
Monday through Wednesday:
An active pattern returns with large-scale troughing evolving for
the eastern Pacific and west coast. While some differences still
remain among the deterministic guidance in evolving the upper
features, ensemble support remains decently high for increasing rain
chances in the Monday to Tuesday timeframe. These chances then
appear to persist into mid week. Looking beyond, a brief break
should follow with some potential for rain chances returning for
next weekend. So it appears that our pattern of below average
temperatures and above average rain chances may persist into the
beginning of the new year.

.AVIATION...as of 10:31 AM PST Wednesday...For the 18Z TAFs.
Scattered RA will continue through the evening today. Prevailing
southerly winds across regional terminals as conditions remain
VFR/MVFR. There is a slight chance for thunderstorms, but mostly
over the southern waters, but it will be monitored through the
day. Better chances for a break in the rain tonight leading into
Thursday morning, with chances of MVFR cigs returning. Slight
chance of FZFG around KSTS/KAPC early Thursday morning.
Vicinity of KSFO.. VFR/MVFR conditions continue as the showery
activity will continue with breezy southerly winds. Conditions
will begin to improve later this evening and into the night. Winds
become light tonight, then will switch to NW Thursday afternoon.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay... Winds will stay southerly and mostly light to
breezy, but may be locally enhanced through the Salinas Valley.
Slight chance for thunder over the ocean, but for now keeping it
out of the TAFs, but will be monitored. Chances for a break in the
rain overnight Wednesday into Thursday but MVFR cigs have a
chance to return.

to continue into Thursday night. There is a slight chance for
isolated thunderstorms primarily over the southern waters. Winds
are expected to remain breezy to locally gusty which may result
