.SYNOPSIS...Sunday and Monday will continue to be dry with mostly
sunny but cool days, and chilly nights with some areas of fog and
low clouds. Potential for patchy frost in cooler inland locations
each morning. Wet weather pattern will dominate next week by
early Tuesday and through the holiday weekend. Expect intermittent
periods of moderate to heavy rain during that time period as
several waves of precipitation move inland next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:10 AM PST Saturday...Another frosty start
this morning as overnight lows generally ranged 30-35 degrees for
inland valley locations with a few spots dipping into the upper
20s. Closer to the coast & bay shorelines, overnight lows were
generally in the mid 30s to low 40s. Most of these overnight lows
are about 2-8 degrees below normal for this time of year. We've
also had some stubborn areas of fog in the North Bay and East Bay
where visibilities got down to around 1/4 to a 1/2 mile, but most
areas now have improving visibilities as the morning progresses.
The one exception is near Santa Rosa where visibilities continue
to oscillate between 1/4 to 1/2 mile. Expect similar mornings for
Sunday and Monday except a couple degrees warmer than today.
No changes to this morning's forecast package, but we'll be
focusing on the wet weather pattern next week as we update the
forecast this afternoon.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 03:38 AM PST Saturday...The night continues
to offer calm and cool conditions across the region. The
forecaster team is currently monitoring fog developing in Sonoma
Co with a separate batch pushing into the East Bay from the delta.
While temperatures in those areas will struggle to cool any
further (most sitting between 34 to 37 degrees), there is the
possibility for patches of freezing fog in the early morning.
Other more dry areas in the interior valleys will fall into the
upper 20s and low 30s, while coastal areas will rage from the mid
30s to low 40s.
Saturday is going to be another cool day with widespread highs in
the 50s under partly cloudy skies. Expect a close copy of this
mornings conditions for Sunday morning as the trend of patches of
fog and cold temperatures continues.
As mentioned in the previous discussions, the weather pattern
becomes active again early in the next work week. Recent model and
ensemble updates have been weakening the initial front and delaying
the time of arrival of the next system. Current low resolution, long
term models and ensemble families place the initial rain chances early
Tuesday morning, but the NAM is pushing it back closer to Tuesday
afternoon. For now the official forecast follows the longer-term
models, but the NAM output will be something to keep an eye on as
more updates come through.
Outside of timing, there is strong agreement on the track of this
oncoming low pressure and how it will allow for persistent rain
chances for much of next week. The long-term models and most of
their ensemble members paint the picture of an initial frontal
passage offering moderate rainfall and breezy to gusty winds, with
more of a focus on the North Bay. Behind the initial front, the
parent low pressure centers itself off the coast. The position of
this low will call for more widespread, but less intense rain
chances around the SF Bay and Central Coast lasting through the work
week. The main argument between the longer term modes and ensembles
comes at the end of the work week as GFS members show another
frontal boundary moving into the area, while the ECMWF has the
parent low begin to move inland. While both outputs call for the
rain to continue into the next weekend, the GFS forecast could mean
for another period of increased rainfall for Friday. With the most
recent update, the official forecast keeps the rain on the steadier
side, but this will be something the forecasting team keeps an eye
on over the next few days.
The end of the rain chances becomes murky across the deterministic
models and even within their own ensemble members. Chances are good
that the rain will continue through the weekend, but how much longer
they last into the next work week has poor confidence.
As of the most recent forecast update rainfall totals between now
and next Saturday morning go as follows:
-Coastal peaks in the North Bay: 5 to 8"
-The Santa Cruz Mtns and Northern Monterey Bay: 4 to 7"
-The Santa Lucia Mtns and the Big Sur Coast: 4 to 7"
-Interior North Bay: 3 to 6"
-Around the SF Bay: 2 to 4"
-Southern and Eastern Monterey Bay 2 to 4"
-Santa Clara and Salinas Valley 1.50 to 3"
While there is strong confidence in the first part of this event,
much can change for the latter half of the week and these numbers
will change. Be sure to be prepared and to keep checking in as this
forecast develops in the next few days.

.AVIATION...as of 9:55 AM PDT Saturday...For the 18z TAFs. Fog
advecting across the Delta and East Bay will continue to lift
through the remainder of the morning as will fog over the North
Bay. This should bring VFR conditions to the entire region this
afternoon and evening with generally light winds. Look for fog and
low clouds to likely return to the North Bay, East Bay and
potentially around the Monterey Bay terminals late in the night
and into Sunday morning. While MVFR/IFR visibilities/ceilings may
also develop around KSFO and the South Bay early Sunday morning,
confidence remains low at this time. Conditions look to improve
around or after 18z Sunday.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR, generally light winds this morning before
turning northwest by this afternoon. FEW/SCT low clouds may
develop near the terminal early Sunday morning with the potential
for lowering visibility as well. However, confidence of occurrence
is low.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...VFR, east to southeast cold air drainage winds 5 to
10 knots except up to 15 knots in the Salinas Valley through the
remainder of the morning. Winds easing and shifting to northwest
briefly late today. East to southeast cold air drainage winds 5 to
10 knots redeveloping tonight and Sunday morning with the
potential for MVFR/IFR visibilities/ceilings to develop early
Sunday morning. Confidence of occurrence is moderate.

.MARINE...as of 09:10 AM PST Saturday...Generally light northwest
winds continuing through today before turning southerly on
Sunday. By late Sunday night, southerly winds strengthen as a
storm deepens offshore. Gusty southerly winds are forecast by
Monday before the storm moves closer to shore starting late Monday
into Tuesday. These stronger, gusty winds are likely to result in
hazardous sea conditions.
