.SYNOPSIS...Low clouds and drizzle should persist overnight as a
weak cold front slowly passes through the region. Drying trend
tomorrow as high pressure builds through the weekend. Periods of
offshore winds will gradually bring warmer temperatures,
especially by Sunday afternoon. Dry weather forecast Monday
through Friday of next week with highs in the 60s to lower 70s.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:40 PM PST Friday...
A weak cold front is bisecting the area this evening while slowly
pushing south. With the slower frontal movement plenty of low
clouds persist with multiple reports of drizzle and even a few
rain showers producing measurable amounts over portions of the Bay
Area this afternoon and evening. Clouds and drizzle should remain
the story into Friday morning before being scoured out from north
to south behind the front. Seeing some partial clearing across
the North Bay this evening, but this may be short lived with
fog/stratus redevelopment likely owing to the moist surface layer.
A decently robust signal exists among the short-term guidance for
low visibility in this area as well, which is consistent with
trends. As such, updated the forecast as follows: 1) expanded fog
mention, particularly for the North Bay Valleys; 2) introduced
light rain accumulations (~0.01-0.02") for the East Bay; and 3)
delayed clearing a little to allow for the slower frontal
progression. Everything else is in good shape and no other
changes are planned for this evening.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:50 PM PST Friday...A weak cold front is still
marching slowly south and east across the Bay Area this
afternoon. The fropa continues to provide cool and damp conditions
around the region, especially the North Bay. Radar imagery from
KMUX shows little in the way of echoes, but a few surface sites
still report an occasional 0.01". Webcams also show wet lenses
too. The bigger impact or more noticeable impact from the fropa
are the cool temperatures. Previous forecast had already lowered
max temperatures today, but the latest forecast lowered them
further. As of 1 PM, several locales north of the Bay Bridge are
struggling to even reach 60 degrees. There are some hints of minor
thinning of clouds in the north, but time is running out for
insolation today.
For about a week, long term models and short term models have been
forecasting a burst of offshore flow behind the current fropa.
The latest near term models continue to support this idea. Local
WRF model shows winds over higher elevations quickly shifting to
the NE late this evening and moreso overnight. As noted on the
previous discussion, there will be ample boundary layer moisture
left in the valleys from today's showers/clouds/fog. This will be
hard to initially mix out despite the drying NE wind. Tonight will
cool into the 40s and poss upper 30s, but feel even colder given
the damp conditions. Fog will also be a possibility too.
For Saturday, and cool and damp start to the day, especially in
the valleys. Similar to today have under cut the max temperatures
a little, especially for the northern half of the forecast area
(north of San Jose). Offshore flow will persist and even
strengthen Saturday night into Sunday. Winds will be strongest in
the North and East Bay higher terrain. The second night of
offshore flow will lead to better drying and less likely for
fog/low clouds. The offshore flow will lower humidity and result
in milder temperatures in the hills, but fortunately little in
the way of fire weather concerns.
Sunday will be the warmest day of the weekend with lingering
offshore flow and ample sunshine. Forecast highs on Sunday will
be in the 60s to mid 70s - or about 3-10 degrees above normal.
Now for the upcoming holiday week: Starts off dry on Monday, but
a low confidence wrinkle in the forecast develops on Tuesday. Most
of the operational models and ensembles are dry, but the last two
runs of the GFS develop a low off the NorCal Coast early Tuesday.
This GFS low pressure system moves south Tuesday bringing rain
showers to the Bay Area. It still looks like an outlier compare to
ensembles and cluster analysis. Will watch this closely.
Regardless dry Thanksgiving and Friday with temps 60s and 70s.
High pressure holds tight into next week and toward the end of the
month. Totally fantasy land at this point, but watching early
December for more active weather. The Pacific jet becomes more
active and stretches across the Pacific. Is there a crack in the
storm door or does it open? We'll see.

.AVIATION...as of 09:53 PM PST Friday...For the 06z TAFs. As the
front trudges slowly southward, lingering moisture is providing
drizzle at some Central Coast terminals, and lower clouds around
the San Francisco Bay. Very tricky forecast with whether or not
terminals will stay MVFR or drop down with low clouds overnight.
The prevailing thought is that drier air will gradually move in,
so MVFR is for prevailing terminals, but several have TEMPOs
groups for lower clouds, for at least through 12Z.
Winds will remain light and onshore through the TAF period, only
reaching up to 10 knots Saturday afternoon. Once the overnight
clouds clear (likely around 17Z), VFR conditions are expected,
lasting through Saturday night as a warming and drying trend takes
hold.
Vicinity of KSFO...Cigs are MVFR and likely to remain through 17Z.
Light drizzle is still being observed on radar south of the
terminal, so -DZ was added back in the short term. Not expecting
low cigs tonight, but will monitor the possibility of reduced vis
from overnight condensation. Not expecting dense fog but will be
monitored. VFR after 17Z with an onshore seabreeze in the
afternoon. Drier air moves in for VFR conditions into Saturday
night.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO except additional clouds
overnight.
Monterey Bay...Drizzlefest continues. Low visibility expected
through the night with chances for low clouds early Saturday
morning. Forecast for now looks to have clearing after 16Z. VFR
Saturday with a light breeze in the afternoon. Lingering moisture
may have a FEW clouds try to form Saturday night, but models are
hinting at staying VFR through the end of the TAF.

.MARINE...as of 07:40 PM PST Friday...A weak cold front continue
to drag southward across the waters this evening and is currently
situated off the Central Coast. Breezy to occasionally gusty
northwest winds are developing in the wake of this front and will
prevail through the day tomorrow before north to northeast
offshore winds take over along the coast tomorrow evening. By
Sunday, rather gusty offshore (east) winds will develop through
the Golden Gate, San Bruno, and Monterey Bay coastal gaps and
bring locally hazardous conditions there with weaker winds
elsewhere. A 5 to 10 foot, 10-12 period west- northwesterly swell
will persist through this weekend as winds become more
northeasterly and diminish.
