.SYNOPSIS...An incoming weather system will bring light
precipitation over the North Bay this evening and portions of the
Bay Area overnight. Dry weather returns Friday afternoon and
evening as high pressure builds. Dry offshore winds Saturday and
Sunday will bring a warming trend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 12:51 PM PST Thursday...Widespread clouds
blanket much of the region this afternoon in advance of an
approaching frontal system. A majority of cloud cover resides in
the mid/upper levels of the atmosphere with a mix of low clouds
near the coast, around the Monterey Bay region and over the far
interior East Bay. This has resulted in temperatures in the lower
50s to lower 60s, a few to as much as 15 deg F cooler compared to
24 hours ago.
The main mid/upper level system will push into the Pacific Northwest
later in the day pushing a frontal boundary into northern California
tonight. This will bring light rainfall to the North Bay and as far
south as the Santa Cruz mountains late in the day and into early
Friday morning. Being so far removed from the main moisture tap and
mid/upper level support, precipitation will diminish greatly south
of the Golden Gate. While a few rain showers may linger into midday
Friday, drying conditions are likely by the afternoon and evening.
Rainfall totals are forecast to range from 0.10"-0.20" in the North
Bay with locally up to 0.40" in the coastal ranges of Sonoma and
Marin counties. From San Francisco southward, generally expecting
rainfall amounts of less than 0.05" as the frontal boundary appears
to wash out over the Bay Area. This will likely result in wet
roadways across the Bay Area, especially the North Bay along with
the potential for lingering fog early Friday morning.
High pressure will build inland over the Pacific Northwest and then
down over northern California this weekend. This will result in some
breezy and gusty northerly/offshore winds Friday night over the
North Bay and East Bay hills/mountains. This offshore flow will
increase a bit Saturday and Saturday night and become more
widespread across the region's higher elevations. That said,
widespread fire concerns are not anticipated given recent rainfall
during the past few weeks. This offshore flow should also dry out
the boundary layer a bit resulting in less widespread fog coverage
during the night/morning hours. This pattern will also support a
warming trend region-wide with more widespread upper 60s to lower
70s, potentially mid 70s over the Central Coast.
Slight cooling is anticipated early next week as another mid/upper
level trough drops across the region. The latest deterministic models
(GFS/ECMWF) show a cut-off low dropping down the California coast
resulting in light precipitation from Tuesday into Wednesday. Will
have to monitor in the coming days to see if the ensembles also pick
up on this trend. Mainly dry and seasonably mild conditions are then
likely for Thanksgiving Day.

.AVIATION...as of 10:04 AM PST Thursday...For the 18z TAFs. Expect
widespread VFR this afternoon but with persistent high clouds.
The afternoon will offer light to moderate winds. VFR remains
intact until the late night, when a weak frontal passage begins to
offer rain chances for the North Bay. These chances will slowly
make their way south, affecting the SF Bay terminals early Friday
morning. Meanwhile, the Monterey Bay looks to experience another
batch of IFR/LIFR as CIGs fall and patches of fog form in the late
night. Widespread VFR returns late Friday morning but the area
will be covered under a blanket of clouds around 5000 ft AGL
through the end of the TAF period.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR until the late night with a blanket of high
clouds. Expect northwesterly winds to become slightly more moderate
this afternoon, but still be relatively light. Expect MVFR
conditions and chances for rain in the late night and lasting
through much of Friday morning. After these chances, expect mid-
level clouds to remain for the rest of the TAF period.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...VFR with high clouds until the late night. Winds
will be light to moderate for the afternoon and look to become
lighter and more variable this evening. IFR/LIFR returns around the
Monterey Bay in the late night as CIGs fall below 500 ft AGL and
patches of dense fog form. Cloud cover and fog patches look to
linger into the late morning and early afternoon before VFR returns
under mid-level clouds.&&
.MARINE...as of 10:02 AM PST Thursday...Expect winds to continue
to stay light and out of the northwest through most of the day. An
approaching weak frontal boundary will move over the waters late
in the night and into Friday morning. Winds will turn to the south
and increase for a short duration of time as the front passes.
Additionally, there is a chance for light showers with that same
system; lasting into Friday morning. The next moderate westerly
swell also arrives late Thursday and into Friday, with more
northwesterly swell arriving over the weekend.
