.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure should bring dry weather and warmer temperatures into
Wednesday. Rain chances increase from northwest to southeast late
Wednesday night into Thursday as a cold front moves through the
region. Quiet weather returns on Friday into the first half of the
weekend, with rain chances increasing by early next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:15 PM PDT Tuesday...A mixed bag weather
wise around the Bay Area today. Some areas, especially to the
north, saw more sunshine, while down here in Monterey we
experienced periods of heavy drizzle. Regardless of the clouds and
drizzle temperatures were seasonable with most locations in the
60s and 70s. Near term weather concerns for tonight will be the
ample low level moisture resulting in low clouds and patchy fog.
Similar to this morning some of the fog could be locally dense and
less than one mile. The evening satellite fog product is already
showing some of the low clouds and fog developing along the coast
and the Diablo/S Gabilan Range.
As the early panels of the 00Z model rolls in timing still looks
on track for the next round of rain. The Bay Area will be mostly
dry on Wednesday, outside of some patchy morning drizzle.
Temperatures will be a tad warmer than today with more locations
in the 70s. It still looks like the rain will hold off for the
evening commute as well. No update needed. For more details see
below.
Speaking of rain. As noted below it looks like the storm door
remains propped open. The latest CPC 6-10 day outlook has much of
CA in above normal chances for rain. The details vary from model
to model, but the longer range outlook is promising. AR guidance
shows another potential push of substantial moisture around
November 8. We'll have to wait and see how the guidance fine tunes
this as the date nears.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:03 PM PDT Tuesday...
Wednesday Night and Thursday:
A short wavelength trough will progress into the Pacific Northwest,
while an accompanying cold front approaches northern CA. Light rain
may develop ahead of the front for the Note Bay on Wednesday night,
with rain chances spreading towards the South/East Bays on Thursday.
Rain amounts have trended down a bit with this system as it appears
our area will receive more of a glancing blow as the better dynamics
lift away to our north. Rain amounts should range from ~1" for the
coastal North Bay, with around 0.3" or less for the interior North
Bay, to around 0.15" for the South/East Bays and for San Francisco.
Amounts farther south should generally range from a few hundredths
to a trace, with perhaps a little more for the Santa Cruz and Santa
Lucia ranges. High temperatures may be a touch cooler given the
additional cloud and rain coverage around.
Friday through Sunday:
Transient high pressure should build into the region by late week
before weakening. Upstream troughing will then progress towards the
Pacific Northwest over the weekend. This should bring dry conditions
through at least the first portion of Sunday. There's a small chance
of light rain reaching the area by Sunday afternoon/evening, but a
consensus of the forecast models now suggest that a slower arrival
time on Sunday night (or Monday) is more likely. Temperatures may
gradually cool a few degrees each day as cloud cover ahead of the
next weather system increases.
Monday and Tuesday:
A progressive upper level pattern will continue as a series of
shortwave troughs advance from the northeast Pacific into the
Pacific Northwest States. While some variability exists in timing
the individual waves, it appears that a stronger system will evolve
during the Monday-Tuesday timeframe when upper troughing reaches our
area. This idea is supported by recent deterministic model runs and
cluster ensembles. A decent moisture feed may accompany this system
as well. That said it's a bit to early to discuss potential rain
amounts but we'll keep watching this system going forward. The key
message is that the storm door remains open along with the
possibility for more beneficial rainfall by early next week.

.AVIATION...as of 11:10 PM PDT Tuesday...For the 06z TAFs. LIFR
currently at Monterey Bay terminals and expected to persist
through the night. North Bay terminals could start to see some
patchy fog develop in the next few hours, bringing localized LIFR
visibilities. Patchy IFR due to fog and/or low clouds redeveloping
later tonight in the SF Bay as well. VFR returning late Wednesday
morning and afternoon. Light rain chances return at the end of
the TAF period for the North Bay and SF Bay terminals.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR currently but MVFR/IFR ceilings tonight
and Wednesday morning. VFR returning late Wednesday morning and
afternoon. Light winds expected through TAF period.
KSFO Bridge Approach...similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...LIFR currently with cigs at 100-200 ft.
Visibilities teetering between a half mile to 2 miles, with the
chance for intermittent visibilities of a quarter mile possible
tonight. VFR returning by late Wednesday morning and afternoon.
Winds mainly light.

.MARINE...as of 09:06 AM PDT Tuesday...Light winds over the
waters today and tonight, mostly out of the south but
northwesterly off the Big Sur coast. Winds will increase out of
the southeast over the northern waters on Wednesday ahead of the
next frontal system, which will likely be accompanied by a period
of rain as it moves through the waters late Wednesday into
Thursday morning. Significantly larger and longer period northwest
swells will spread southward over the waters beginning Thursday.
