.SYNOPSIS...Beneficial rain should persist into this evening before
diminishing. Dry weather should prevail into Wednesday with high
pressure in control. Rain chances increase from northwest to
southeast late Wednesday night into Thursday as a cold front moves
through the region. Quiet weather should then return for the
first half of the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:12 PM PDT Monday...A front continues to
decay/wash out over the Bay Area this evening. This front has
brought another round of beneficial and needed rainfall to the
region. Over the last 24 hours almost everywhere in the forecast
area, with the exception of interior Monterey/San Benito, picked
up some measurable rainfall. The rainfall winners are the the
North Bay Coastal Mountains and the Santa Cruz Mountains with a
general 1-2 inches. Mt Tam is creeping toward the 2 inch mark.
For this evening and tonight - radar imagery continues show
scattered shower activity across the region, except interior
Monterey/San Benito. The official forecast was updated to fine
tune the forecast - downplay rain chances over the N Bay after
midnight and increase chances E/S Bay and around Monterey Bay. Not
expecting a lot of additional rainfall, but an additional few
hundredths to a tenth or two is possible. As the shower activity
diminishes toward morning the very moist low levels may contribute
to widespread fog tomorrow. Current forecast will carry a broad
mention of fog tomorrow morning with biggest impacts to the
morning commute.
No other updates at this time. Next round of rain is on track for
Wednesday into Thursday.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:42 PM PDT Monday...
Tuesday and Wednesday:
The flow pattern should amplify with building heights aloft across
the region. This will support surface high pressure for our area
with warming temperatures and dry conditions. Meanwhile our next
weather-making system of interest should begin approaching from the
eastern Pacific late in the period.
Wednesday Night and Thursday:
A short wavelength trough will progress into the Pacific Northwest,
while an accompanying cold front attendant to surface low pressure
moves southeast through our area. Rain showers are expected to
develop ahead of this front on Wednesday night across the North Bay,
with rain chances spreading south/east across the remainder of our
area on Thursday. This system appears to be rather similar in
magnitude to the one impacting us today, with light to perhaps
occasionally moderate rain rates. The highest rain totals appear to
be for the coastal North Bay with ~1", to ~0.5" or less for the
interior North Bay, and less than 0.25" around the SF Bay and for
points south and east. High temperatures on Thursday may be just a
touch cooler than average depending upon the amount of precipitation
and cloud cover we experience.
Friday through Sunday:
Transient high pressure should build into the region by late week
before weakening. Upstream troughing will then progress towards the
Pacific Northwest over the weekend. Deterministic models and some
ensemble members suggest possible support for light rain on Sunday
into Monday. This is also reflected in the latest output from the
statistically weighted National Blend of Models, which has
introduced precipitation changes during this time. So while
predictability during this period is somewhat limited, will defer
to the blended guidance until a clearer picture emerges.
Temperatures should remain seasonal.

.AVIATION...as of 11:00 PM PDT Monday...For the 06z TAFs. Mix of
VFR/MVFR/IFR conditions across the area with most terminals seeing
CIGs hovering around 3,000 ft. Rain showers currently in the
Monterey Bay to last into the morning. Lingering low level
moisture after showers may result in MVFR/IFR cigs overnight and
through late Tuesday morning for most sites. Already seeing some
sites (i.e. KLVK, KMRY, KOAK) teeter between MVFR and IFR with
intermittent lower CIGs.
Patchy fog is also not out of the question for tonight.
Conditions should improve by tomorrow afternoon. Winds remain out
of the S/SE at about 10-15 kt for most sites. Winds should also
diminish this evening, but retain at least some southerly
component until Tuesday afternoon when onshore flow returns.
Vicinity of KSFO...MVFR. Intermittent IFR tonight with occasional
patchy low clouds. Expect SCT-BKN low clouds between 1,500-3,000
ft AGL to persist into Tuesday afternoon before cigs lift.
Southerly winds 10-15 kt into this evening before winds diminish
overnight. Latest guidance shows southerly winds continuing into
Tuesday afternoon.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...VCSH with VFR conditions currently and SCT-BKN
clouds between 3,000-3,500 ft AGL. KMRY having occasional IFR/LIFR
with localized low clouds. Showers will be possible into early
Tuesday morning. VFR conditions forecast to return by Tuesday
afternoon. S/SW winds around 10 kt this afternoon should diminish
and turn more SE this evening. Onshore winds back Tuesday
afternoon.

.MARINE...as of 02:59 PM PDT Monday...Breezy to gusty southwest
winds persist in portions of the the coastal waters due to today's
frontal passage, but are beginning to lessen. These winds will
maintain hazardous seas conditions for smaller vessels into this
evening. Winds are expected to shift back out of the west to
northwest later this evening. A long period west to northwest
swell is forecast mid to late week.
