.SYNOPSIS...An approaching weather system from the northwest has
brought a region-wide cooldown. A surge of upper level moisture
from the south will also combine with this system to produce a
slight chance of thunderstorms overnight into early Friday
morning, with possible dry lightning and heightened fire weather
concerns. Subtle warming and quiet weather return this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:58 PM PDT Thursday...All eyes are on radar
at this hour. Echoes are observed over the coastal waters and
moving onshore over North Bay. Office mets saw the first lightning
strike in our CWA at about 9:15 P.M. on GLM Satellite data just
off the Marin County coast. Several of our followers on Twitter
also reported seeing lightning or hearing thunder in the area.
Since then, have seen several flashes over Sonoma County and one
over Santa Clara Also have received reports of showers around the
Bay Area. However, most of the lightning and convective activity
has been occurring over the San Joaquin Valley through the day,
and more recently in the Sacramento Valley. The ingredients are
still present for more of this activity to move into our CWA. The
upper trough which will provide the lift to trigger these storms
is about 250 miles off the NorCal coast and will approach the
coast overnight. Measuring some cold cloud tops with the mid-level
moisture ahead of the trough. 00Z KOAK sounding shows favorable
parameters for elevated convection. MUCAPE value around 650 J/Kg -
a daily record based on sounding climatology, unusually hight
PWAT near 1.20 in, and steep 700-500mb Lapse Rate of 7.4C/km. At
this point, it's just a waiting game for any outbreaks. Red Flag
Warning is still in effect for the North Bay Mountains and
Valleys, East Bay Hills and Valleys, and the Diablo Range through
11 a.m. Friday. See Fire Weather Discussion below for more
details.
Convective weather aside, we experienced a significant cooldown
today. MaxTs were down in our interior North Bay and East Bay sites
10 to as much as 15 deg compared to yesterday. Around the Bay
Shoreline, it was around 5 to 10 deg cooler, and a little less along
the coast. This, as the upper level high over the Four Corners
region is being nudged eastward by the incoming upper trough. Look
for further cooling tomorrow, as the trough moves onshore. Temps
will be seasonable, but maybe a few degrees below daily normals. A
subtle warming trend is forecast for the weekend as ensembles and
deterministic solutions indicate high pressure will restrengthen
over the desert southwest. Still, seasonable temps expected for this
time of year for coastal areas, and a bit above normal inland.

.AVIATION...as of 1:18 AM PDT Friday...For the 06z TAFs.
Scattered thunderstorms with at least a couple dozen lightning
strikes over the North Bay have shifted to northern Napa and
Sonoma counties. Showers stretch back to a mid level trough over
the coastal waters, the trough has yet to move eastward across the
Bay Area. Isolated lightning eastern Santa Clara county has
shifted to the Central Valley. Convection is driven by instability
aloft mainly north and east while stable conditions continue at
the surface. It's VFR inland to VLIFR-IFR due to coastal fog and
stratus. Cool, damp, onshore winds are ongoing closest to the
coastline within the 1,000 to 1,500 feet marine layer. Surface
dewpoint temps, levels of water vapor, have increased thus with
residual showers aloft and cool, damp conditions with onshore
winds within the marine layer, additional light measurable showers
and/or drizzle will likely result in wet runways through morning,
best chances across the Bay Area. May need to consider tempo
-dz/-shra in tafs, will amend tafs as needed.
Conditions slowly improving to MVFR-VFR later on this morning and
afternoon. Onshore winds continuing with coastal stratus and fog
/IFR/ returning tonight and Saturday morning.
Vicinity of KSFO...A mix of mid and low level clouds through
morning, low to moderate confidence VFR through morning. Onshore
winds and a gradually deepening of the marine layer may allow
coastal low clouds and light drizzle to reach the terminal this
morning. And still waiting on the 500 mb trough to pass by to the
east as well, thus showers aloft and any patchy light drizzle may
cause wet runways. Best chances for MVFR-VFR is by late morning
and afternoon today.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...VLIFR-IFR in stratus and fog, isolated showers
through morning. Aside from patchy light drizzle this morning,
conditions should be drier relative the Bay Area. Ceilings and
visibilities lifting to MVFR-VFR by late morning and afternoon.
Stratus and fog /IFR/ returning tonight and Saturday morning.

.FIRE WEATHER...as of 9:35 PM PDT Thursday...No changes to
ongoing Red Flag Warning for dry lightning. Event unfolding pretty
much as expected. So far only a few confirmed cloud to ground
strikes with numerous cloud to cloud flashes, mainly over the
North Bay. We are in the peak period of instability from now
through the overnight hours. We have seen rapid cell development
along the coast from near Davenport down to Big Sur so potential
for storms developing quickly remains likely as airmass is quite
unstable by Bay Area standards while well defined shortwave trough
approaches. Its a nearly ideal situation for night time
convection with no need for surface heating. Given the night time
component should any fires start due to lightning they may be
harder than normal to detect and contain until sunrise. Getting
early reports of new fires in Tulare county where storms were
wetter but lightning more prolific. Upshot being that threat
remains real for possible new ignitions overnight where lightning
occurs. Rain drops are reaching the ground but storms are fast
moving and widespread wetting rains are unlikely.
Red Flag in place through 11 am Friday but latest indications
show main threat should be exiting the Bay Area shortly after
sunrise. Will monitor things overnight and update accordingly.

.MARINE...as of 09:56 PM PDT Thursday...Thunderstorms are
currently moving over the northern waters producing lightning
near Bodega Bay with the potential for strong, erratic wind gusts
near the storms. The risk for storms will continue into Friday
morning. Winds remain out of the northwest with stronger gusts
over most of the waters overnight. The sea state remains mostly
wind driven before mixed seas returns this weekend featuring a
moderate period northwest swell and a lighter longer period
southerly swell.
