.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will run well above seasonal averages
through Wednesday along with ongoing dry conditions. A surge of
upper level moisture will result in a slight chance for
thunderstorms late Thursday afternoon through Thursday night over
the North Bay and interior East Bay. Look for slight cooling late
in the week with the return of a deeper marine layer.

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:50 PM PDT Wednesday...Afternoon satellite
shows a much more diffuse marine layer this afternoon - more
patchy in nature. Less clouds this afternoon has led to slightly
warmer temperatures along portions of the coast. Away from the
coast is a different story as temperatures are rather warm and in
the 80s and 90s. Interior areas will likely top out in the 90s to
lower 100s. The satellite imagery also shows some upper level
moisture streaming off the coast and over far NorCal, but more on
that later.
For tonight, the marine layer will likely fill back in along the
coast and move locally inland. Above the marine layer, higher
terrain, will be mild and relatively dry. The longwave synoptic
pattern overnight will feature a large upper level high pressure
anchored near the Four Corners region and a digging/strengthening
upper trough off the NorCal coast. Upper level sub-tropical
moisture riding the western periphery of the high will continue
to stream northward. Some of the hi-res models , local WRF, show
enough moisture and marginal instability over S
Monterey/Interior San Benito for a pre-dawn shower or isolated
thunderstorm, but confidence is too low to include in the forecast
at this time.
As the day progresses on Thursday more sub-tropical moisture will
stream north and eventually northeast over the North Bay. Models
are capturing this moisture rather well as denoted by the
anomalously high PWATs (1"+). Upper level instability begins to
increase through the day as well, which may lead to a few
showers/isolated thunderstorms over the coastal waters. By late
afternoon daytime heating increases and upper level support from
a deepening trough really ramps up instability. At this point,
thunderstorm chances increase further over the North Bay late
afternoon/evening. The upper level trough lurking off the coast
will move inland Thursday night and early Friday morning. The
trough will bring some decent upper level support from a jet max
rounding the base of the trough. This timeframe has the
greatest potential for thunderstorms(overnight). The eastward progression of
the upper trough will also transition the chance of storms from
only in the N Bay to now the E Bay. The ECMWF EPS lightning
probability increases dramatically due to the upper level
support during the during this timeframe as well. Forecast point
soundings show some dry air still in the mid and lower levels
leading to drier thunderstorms. Storm motion will be pretty decent
too, so even if they do have some precip they'll be moving along.
By 15-18Z Friday the upper trough will have moved far enough
inland the chance for thunderstorms will have shifted eastward.
In summary, this is a low confidence high impact event. It appears
there will be two chances for thunderstorms: this initial push of
moisture Thursday afternoon/evening and then with the upper
trough during the night. All that being said, a Fire Weather Watch
has been issued for the N Bay Mts/Valleys, E Bay Hills/Valleys
and Diablo Range 5PM Thursday-11AM Friday.
Two other items to note - this event does not look like the
August 2020 lightning outbreak. Also, lightning climatology shows
that lightning does occur in September. September 11, 2017,
featured tropical moisture off the coast and a few lightning
strikes over land with gusty outflows.
The passing trough to the north will bring a cooling trend Friday
and over the weekend. The marine layer will likely return during
this time period as well.

.AVIATION...as of 04:37 PM PDT Wednesday...For the 00z TAFs. As a
few high clouds pass over the North Bay, VFR skies dominate with
breezy onshore winds at surrounding terminals Wednesday evening.
Overnight, will remain VFR as the marin stratus rebuilds over the
ocean under a compressed marine layer. Low clouds and fog are
possible along the immediate coastline and for terminals around
the Monterey Bay. Any low clouds should clear out by about 16Z
Thursday morning. Increasing mid-to-high level clouds expected
throughout Thursday afternoon. Winds will be onshore and breezy,
with stronger gusts possible through the coastal gaps. Slight
chance for dry thunderstorms to pop-up Thursday evening.
Vicinity of KSFO...Onshore and windy for the next three hours.
Winds will gradually diminish but remain breezy through the
evening. A FEW low clouds may pass over the terminal, but most low
clouds will, once again, be confined to the coastline. Winds will
once again increase Thursday afternoon to just over 20 kts as high
clouds increase. There is a slight chance for dry thunderstorm
development Thursday evening. While the main threat is in the
North and East Bays away from the terminal itself, VCTS was added
to the end of the TAF. Exact timing and threat will be adjusted
with subsequent TAF packages.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...VFR with breezy onshore winds. A compressed marine
layer keeps the risk of LIFR cigs overnight and the chance for
reduced vis and patchy fog. Low clouds will likely clear out
around 16Z. VFR forecast for Thursday afternoon as the onshore
seabreeze increases as higher clouds increase as well.

.MARINE...as of 02:28 PM PDT Wednesday...Gusty northwest winds
resulting in hazardous seas for smaller vessels across our outer
waters. Coastal jets are expected to continue along our coastal
waters over the next couple of days. Localized onshore gusts will
continue in areas that just past the Golden Gate this afternoon
before dropping off in intensity by the early evening. Gusty
northwest winds will persist over our outer waters tonight and
through tomorrow morning. A moderate period northwest swell will
then gradually mix with a light longer period southerly swell by
the weekend.
