.SYNOPSIS...A warming and drying trend will continue on this
Labor Day into midweek as high pressure builds over the region.
Mid to upper level monsoonal moisture will bring extra cloud
coverage into midweek. Temperatures trend cooler with the return
of a deeper marine layer by Friday. Deeper cooling by late next
weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:15 AM PDT Monday...Had a few reports this
morning of localized areas with dense fog. Dense fog conditions
are not as widespread as yesterday morning, but some places did
see visibilities around 1/4 to 3/4 mile. Expecting the fog to
clear out within the next hour or two for the impacted areas.
Deterministic and ensembles still show that today should be
warmer. The airmass aloft shows that 850 mb temps will range 24-27
degrees C compared to the 21-24 yesterday. 500 mb heights will
also increase over our region to around 595 dam as the center of
the high pressure is just east of our CWA near the CA/NV border.
In addition, the marine layer has consistently stayed around 1000
ft deep which limits the cooler ocean air from moving very far
inland. Did some minor tweaking to today's max temperature forecast to
ensure that our highs today are warmer than what we saw yesterday.
There were just a few reports of triple digit heat yesterday, but
we'll see an increase of our extreme inland areas in the upper 90s
to low 100s. Hottest areas will be: northern & eastern parts of
Sonoma and Napa counties, the more inland portions of the East
Bay (like Livermore/Concord region and eastward), southern half of
Monterey County, and much of San Benito County. Meanwhile, coastal
areas will mostly stay in the 70s to 80s. Please make sure you
stay hydrated and cool on this Labor Day holiday, especially if
you tend to be sensitive to heat. Also, monitor air quality as
there could be light to moderate smoke near the surface from
wildfires.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 3:00 AM PDT Monday...Happy Labor Day! While
Labor Day is known to mark an unofficial end of the summer for
many, summerlike weather conditions are forecast to persist
through the coming days. This is due to the presence of 594-596dm
high pressure system centered over the Las Vegas metro and
extending out to encompass all of California, Arizona, Utah, New
Mexico and Colorado. This positioning differs somewhat versus
previous model runs that instead focused the center of the heat
dome over the Bakersfield area, though, much of the same area
remains under the high pressure heat dome due to additional east-
west bulging of the ridge, including over the Bay Area and Central
Coast. (Side note: It is fairly uncommon to see the forecast
models struggle to resolve the trajectory and coverage of a
backbuilding ridge in the short term, but we did observe that
within the last 24 hours, increasing forecast uncertainty).
Temperatures have been steadily increasing over the last few days
and are expected to hit higher highs today as 500mb temperatures
rise to 25-26C across the periphery. Yesterday's day over day
maximum temperatures were 4-8 degrees higher than Friday's and are
expected to increase another 2-4 degrees today. That said, even
further warming than forecast could be possible today as overnight
lows regionwide are running roughly 4 to 13 degrees higher than
last nights, an indication that warmer than forecast air may be
lingering aloft and ready to descend onto the region today (see
recent increase of forecast uncertainty in note above). The areas
with the largest night over night temperature spreads are across
the higher terrain atop any nocturnal or marine inversions, and a
better proxy for the true character of the air mass aloft.
Speaking of the marine layer, it has compressed further overnight
and is bringing locally cooler, less dry conditions and dense fog
to the immediate coastlines of the Monterey Bay, North Coast, and
portions of the Salinas valley. Expect locally dense fog and
drizzle to redevelop again this morning through these areas,
especially on the lower to mid level slopes of the ocean facing
coastal ranges.
Beyond today, ensembles and forecast models have been migrating
towards a solution with stronger than anticipated high
pressure/heat dome coverage through the midweek with the warmest
temperatures still looming after today (at least, across the
interior). This comes despite the center point of the heat dome
migrating eastward towards the Four Corners region by Thursday-
Friday. This makes more sense upon viewing the 500mb height
analysis as it is clear there remains a significant east- west
bulge of the ridge until at least Thursday, if not along the
periphery into Friday. Previous forecast model runs suggested low
pressure would reign in the ridging as early as Wednesday, then
Thursday, and now it is expected late Thursday night into Friday.
That said, the late week troughing is now too being downplayed as
the downstream ridge looks strong enough to shrug off the
advancing trough and deflect it out of the region by Saturday. It
is not until perhaps late Sunday that a broader, deeper trough is
finally able to herald a significant change in the weather pattern
towards cooler, wetter weather.
Main takeaways are then that a) high pressure looks to dominate
longer than expected through the next week, with a weaker trough
Friday, and a deeper trough and shift in weather pattern a week
out by late Sunday & b) there is higher than expected uncertainty
in the weather ensembles at this point and thus warrants closer
watching and a degree of skepticism about deterministic output.
Otherwise, the other interesting feature to watch will be a 580dm
500mb cutoff low approx 750 miles west of Hearst Castle. This cut
off low was the former base of a trough that impacted the area
last week and has been lingering offshore for days, trapped in
place by the stalwart heat dome developing downstream. This
feature is interesting in that the buffer region between it and
the building heat dome/ridge over us today will advect in warm,
moist air at multiple levels through the next 2-3 days. As a
result, expect continued chaotic decks of altocumulus and/or
cirrus arriving from the south. While convective models suggest
isolated pockets of deeper moisture/instability, the feed is too
stretched/diluted to support much more than the weakest of
vertical convective development, so showers/thunderstorms are
unlikely. That said, as the cutoff low begins to lift as the ridge
shifts downstream midweek, dynamics improve as 1.4-1.6 TPW
moisture ridges SW-NE off our coast and into the CONUS from
Mendocino northward.

.AVIATION...as of 10:31 AM PDT Monday...For the 18z TAFs. Other
than some passing high clouds, VFR is expected for most of Monday.
Winds are generally light, with an afternoon seabreeze expected
around coastal terminals. Isolated areas of haze from the ongoing
wildfires, but mostly P6SM. High pressure remains in California,
keeping the marine layer compressed below 700 feet. So any return
of stratus clouds overnight will be low once again with patchy fog
in some areas with limited inland reach, confining it mostly to
coastal terminals. Clearing back to VFR once again on Tuesday as
winds will be slightly breezier Tuesday afternoon.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR. Onshore winds will be up to 20 knots
Monday afternoon, before diminishing overnight. Low clouds will be
confined to the coastline, and while a FEW to SCT may appear near
the terminal, VFR is expected through the remainder of the TAF.
Winds will increase through the San Bruno gap Tuesday between 20
to 25 knots.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...The low clouds have returned to the Bay. Some haze
and mist for lower vis may linger through 19Z, but VFR conditions
are forecast for Monday afternoon. Winds will be onshore with
breezy conditions around 12 knots. Low clouds and fog are expected
to return once again overnight tonight for LIFR, possible VLIFR
conditions before clearing late in the forecast period.

.MARINE...as of 08:35 AM PDT Monday...Winds will remain mostly
light to moderate and out of the northwest on Monday, with locally
breezy conditions this afternoon and evening along the immediate
coastline south of Pigeon Point to Point Pinos and south of Point
Sur along the Big Sur coast. Winds will also be expected to be
gusty near the Golden Gate gap. Gradually increasing winds later
this week. Mixed seas persist with a moderate period northwest
swell and a light longer period southerly swell.
