.SYNOPSIS...A cold front will spread rain from north to south
across the forecast area today through tonight. Widespread showers
expected Tuesday while isolated showers continue as late as
Wednesday. Dry weather is likely from Thursday through next
weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:18 PM PST Monday...The cold front
continues move over the Bay Area at a snail's pace. Rainfall
totals remain as forecasted with higher peaks in Northern Sonoma
Co nearing 1" while the vallies in the area stayed closer to 0.25"
so far. At the time of this update, the cold front is centered
over the San Francisco Bay with a few sites in the South Bay
picking up their first hundredths of an inch in the last hour. The
Santa Cruz Mtns have also seen spotty rainfall so far with Ben
Lomond up to 0.12" since this afternoon. Minor adjustments have
been made to the official forecast to compensate for the slow pace
of the cold front. Peak rain chances for Monterey and San Benito
Counties have been pushed back later into the night and going into
Tuesday morning. The Monterey Bay may see lingering showers
behind the front for much of Tuesday. During that time, some
slight chances for additional rain could wrap behind the low
pressure associated with the cold front, which could last into
early Wednesday. Rainfall rates and rainfall amounts from these
lingering and additional chances look to remain low. Behind the
last few chances for rain, the longer term models continue to
agree on a dry pattern.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:00 PM PST Monday...A 528dm 500mb negatively
tilted low pressure system is currently centered off of Vancouver
Island in British Columbia and is the dominate feature across the
PacNW and extreme northwestern California. WFO Eureka's radar has
depicted a very sluggish cold frontal boundary on the
southeastern flank of this storm system and has taken nearly all
morning to surpass Cape Mendocino (well up the coast from the
North Bay). Our KMUX radar situated atop Mt Umunhum has been
picking up returns 100-200 miles off the Sonoma since mid morning
and within the last hour have inched within a few miles of the
coast. Rain gauges in the Sonoma coastal ranges have since picked
up a few hundredths of rain as weaker precursor showers spawn
ahead of the main cold frontal rain band. Winds have backed to
become south to southeast across the North Bay with generally
breezy to locally gusty conditions. Sustained winds in all but a
few valley locations are ranging from 10-20mph, with gusts
20-30mph. Santa Rosa airport's current weather report features
southerly winds at 17mph with gusts to 23mph and increasing cloud
cover, which fits the above criteria. Expect to see similar winds
a few hours prior to the arrival of precipitation in your area.

Speaking of arrival, this system is anticipated to remain on
the sluggish side and will primarily impact the immediate San
Francisco Bayshore and southward from dusk and onward into the
mid portion of the night.

Storm total rain estimates for the urban areas generally range
from approximately 1/10" to 3/4", with the lower end in the
southern rain shadowed valleys, the highest in the north bay
valleys, and the mid range (around half an inch) for the San
Francisco Bay shoreline. Coastal slopes will see significantly
more, especially for the Santa Cruz mountains and northward, with
1.5 - 3 possible at the peaks/up favored slopes. These numbers are
slightly higher than previous expected given the sluggish pace of
the main frontal boundary and additional support for lingering
post frontal showers early Tuesday and wrap around showers
Wednesday. Peak rain rates from this storm system will top out
around .25-.35/hr in non-orographically enhanced areas (such as
valleys), while orographic lift could increase that to as high as
.4 - .6/hr over the favored upslope portions of our surrounding
hills and mountains. That said, these higher rain rates would be
very localized and would still fall below criteria for significant
flash flooding or debris flow concerns. The caveat being that the
recent atmospheric river's heavy rainfall has left the soils
fairly saturated, meaning additional rainfall from this storm
system will only briefly be absorbed before favoring running off.
Thus, while generally beneficial rainfall is forecast to fall from
this storm system, very localized nuisance level flooding and
slide potential exists in low lying or poorly drained areas. These
wet conditions will make for a messy commute this evening and
again for Tuesday morning.

A return to drier weather is then anticipated in the wake of this
final system after the very progressive weather pattern of the
last couple of weeks. This drier weather will arrive as our
currently arriving low pressure system splits on Wednesday, with
the upstream portion (ie base of the trough) wrapping into a
closed low south of a building east Pacific ridge, forming a Rex
block that will persist into early next week.

Weak offshore flow is expected Wednesday night into Thursday,
with locally gusty conditions over the North Bay mountains,
however, minimal fire danger is expected from these offshore winds
given the recent moisture, low fuels risk, fair overnight
humidities, and minimum daytime humidity only as low as around
35%.

.AVIATION...as of 9:39 PM PST Monday...For the 06Z TAFs. It's VFR
to MVFR except VLIFR-IFR conditions in rain near the cold front.
Southerly winds subsiding overnight. Showers will linger into
tomorrow morning for most terminals, but through the afternoon
around Monterey Bay, allowing MVFR conditions to persist.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR to MVFR with rain tonight. Breezy southerly
winds with gusts to 20 kt. Possibly IFR in heaviest rain overnight.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR to MVFR tonight. Rain arriving after
midnight. Breezy southeast winds tonight, strongest in the Salinas
Valley. MVFR conditions tomorrow morning and perhaps into the
afternoon.

.MARINE...as of 9:23 PM PST Monday...A cold front will move over
the coastal waters and bays tonight and Tuesday. Winds will
produce locally steep to very steep fresh south seas through
Tuesday. This in combination with gusty winds will result in
hazardous seas conditions, particularly for smaller vessels.
Northwest winds will gradually return on Tuesday before
strengthening mid to late week. Moderate to long period northwest
swell will prevail over the next few days.
