.SYNOPSIS...Monsoonal influences are decreasing and a return to a
marine layer dominated environment begins tonight. The marine
layer will gradually deepen into midweek and promote cool, moist,
onshore flow. Another potential surge of monsoonal moisture is
possible late in the weekend to early next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:30 PM PDT Monday...Evening satellite
imagery depicts a broad 598dm 500mb monsoonal ridge across the
intermountain west via monsoonal thunderstorms and wildfire
rotating clockwise west of the Rockies. Meanwhile, coastal stratus
lingers along the coast south of a 560dm 500mb Gulf of Alaska
farther north. The high pressure ridge nudged farther westward
into our territory over the last few days than expected. This then
deflected a majority of the previously scheduled monsoonal
moisture farther offshore and mitigated the risk of high based
thunderstorms, thus bringing an early cancellation of the Red Flag
Warning earlier today. Interestingly enough, the ingredients for
a brief high based thunderstorm did converge early this morning
over Sonoma county where a sole lightning strike was detected
after sunrise. This came as the moisture that was deflected
offshore finally rotated back onshore -- a potential sign of how
the event could have turned out otherwise. Otherwise, today was
slightly cooler and a fair bit more humid than yesterday, which is
not a tremendous surprise given the increased cloud cover and
entrainment of moisture from the monsoonal air mass.
For tonight, the marine layer has already rebounded to 1500-1600
feet per the Ford Ord profiler, another clear indication that the
pressure pendulum between the Gulf of Alaska low and monsoonal
ridge impacting the SF Bay Area and Central Coast is swaying back
towards the lower pressure system. Tomorrow will see slightly
warmer conditions for the interior as the drying air mass allows
for higher temps. Meanwhile, most locations will see similar if
not slightly cooler temperatures as the ridge retreats and a
resurgent marine layer reintroduces cool, damp, onshore flow to
the coastal and low lying areas once again. This trend is
anticipated to continue through the coming days with the marine
layer eventually redeepening to 2000 feet by midweek.
The weather pattern will see another transition beginning late in
the week and into the weekend. The Gulf of Alaska low lifts into
British Columbia early Thursday and then drags the jet stream
well to the north into Friday. This allows for a broad but lower
amplitude/intensity desert southwest monsoonal ridge (ie
594-595dm) to backbuild towards California late Friday into the
upcoming weekend. With this, the GFS and EURO deterministic and
ensemble datasets indicate the potential for another clockwise
flow of monsoonal moisture from the south. Both of these longer
term global forecast systems depict a weak low embedded in the
broader monsoonal flow accompanying this monsoonal moisture as it
cycles up the coast next Sunday into Monday. It is still well too
soon to get excited about this scenario as it is likely to
significantly change. Furthermore, todays early cancellation of
the Red Flag Warning should be indication that these events are
notoriously difficult to pin down as they require many moving
ingredients to behave as modeled and come together nearly
perfectly given how far on the western periphery of the monsoonal
flow coastal CA is. Thus, we will continue to keep an eye on this
potential and begin to take it more seriously once it shows up in
several concurrent runs. Generally it is not until the higher
resolution convective models have a chance to render the potential
scenario that we truly begin to build forecast confidence in
these low probability potentially high impacts elevated convection
monsoonal events.

.AVIATION...as of 11:30 PM PDT Monday...For the 06z TAFs. VFR
continues tonight for most terminals except the Monterey Bay
terminals will remain IFR through 16-17Z. KOAK will see
intermittent MVFR ceilings through the morning hours. Expect
winds to weaken overnight. Breezy onshore winds Tuesday afternoon
with some high clouds.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR through the TAF period. Skies FEW-SCT
at006-015. Winds build slowly through Tuesday morning leading to
a breezy and gusty afternoon with 22 kt westerly winds and up to
30 kt gusts. These winds look to last through Tuesday evening,
before backing off into the night.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...IFR through the night and into Tuesday morning.
Expect chances for fog/mist overnight and cigs falling to around
500 ft AGL. Winds look to remain mild overnight, but will begin to
increase mid morning Tuesday. Cloud cover looks to thin in the
mid morning, leading to VFR before noon. Parts of the Monterey
Bay, such as SNS look to continue to see increases in wind,
leading to a breezy afternoon.

.MARINE...as of 9:16 PM PDT Monday...Northwest winds generating
wind waves with periods of around 7 to 9 seconds. Strongest wind
gusts are expected over the northern outer waters and along the
Sonoma Coastline, north of Point Reyes. These strong winds and
resulting steep waves are hazardous for smaller vessels. Stronger
wind gusts are also expected to funnel through coastal gaps and
the Golden Gate into the San Francisco Bay tomorrow afternoon and
evening. A lighter, longer period southerly swell persists,
diminishing into midweek. Winds will increase across most of the
waters midweek.
