What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS San Francisco Bay Area, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Jun 26, 11:29 AM PDT, 2 hours 16 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jun 26, 11:29 AM PDT, 2 hours 16 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area
1129 AM PDT Sat Jun 26 2021

.SYNOPSIS...Warmer temperatures for inland locations this weekend.
Low pressure offshore will approach Cape Mendocino but stay
offshore. This low will bring a return of onshore breezes to the
region on Sunday keeping the temperatures near the coast and bays
seasonable while temperatures inland will warm to 5 - 10 degrees
above normal for today and Sunday. Seasonable weather pattern
next week with nightly intrusions of low clouds and fog followed
by sunny and warm afternoons.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 9:43 AM PDT Saturday...No significant
forecast updates this morning. Earlier we had some patchy drizzle
and fog as the marine layer was compressing in response to
building high pressure aloft. Latest satellite trends show the low
clouds quickly burning off. SFO to Sac is 1.5 mb onshore and we'll
hold onto the westerly winds all day. This will keep any
significant warming potential in-check around the bay. Inland
areas still look on track to rapidly warm into the 90s with some
lower 100s for the most interior locations of the Bay Area and
Central Coast.

A well defined upper low out near 130 west will slowly march
eastward on Sunday, approaching Cape Mendocino but staying
offshore. This feature will keep onshore winds in place and help
to keep the main upper ridging nudged eastward. All this to say
that today looks to be the hottest day inland and coastal/bay
locations will benefit from persistent onshore winds this weekend
despite the impressive warming aloft. This is all supported by
the ECMWF extreme forecast index (EFI) which keeps extreme heat
well to the north and south of the Bay Area.

Some more coastal drizzle both Sunday and Monday morning as the
proximity of that low may add just enough synoptic lift combined
with onshore breezes and a shallow but well defined marine layer
along the coast.

Pattern looks pretty seasonable next week and inland temps may
actually warm as the aforementioned low lifts northward and high
pressure builds. Will be watching the monsoon push towards the
Sierra early in the week with some outside potential of activity
pushing towards the Central Coast by mid/late week. That scenario
is unlikely but worth watching as any t-storms after heat this
time of year can lead to new fire ignitions.

&&

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 03:02 AM PDT Saturday...Currently, satellite
shows most of CA's central coast below 1500ft being covered by
marine stratus. This compressed marine layer will continue its
diurnal ebb and flow through the weekend as high pressure builds
in over the west coast. The highest heights will remain to our
north, over the Pac NW, with the axis of the high bleeding down
the CA/NV border. 850 mb temperatures are forecasted to quickly
warm around 4-6 degrees tomorrow, reaching 26-28 degrees C by
noon. These warmer 850 temperatures should allow the interior and
higher elevation temperatures to reach 5 - 15 degrees above
normal for Saturday and Sunday. North eastern Sonoma county, far
north Napa county, and far south east Monterey county could see a
few locations reach into the low 100s. Most of the central coast
population will see near seasonal temperatures this weekend
thanks to the afternoon delta breeze, as well as some coastal
areas remaining cloudy all day. This made the temperature forecast
a bit difficult, but I ended up keeping the coastal and bay areas
similar to yesterdays temperatures and raised the interior
temperatures by a degree or two for this weekend.

As we enter into early next week, a cut off low approaches the
northern coast of CA and begins its climb over the upper level
high. This will push some of those higher 500mb heights to the
east, and try to lift the marine layer a tad for Monday and
Tuesday. Maybe some coastal drizzle over Sonoma county too, but
the low continues north.

There is slight disagreement between the global models for next
week. The GFS brings an inverted trough westward over the desert
SW Tuesday. This will keep the high pressure over the Pac NW out
of our area and will transport some moisture with it, leading to
some isolated TS chances by the end of next week in southern
Monterey and San Benito counties. The ECM dissolves the inverted
trough over AZ. Nonetheless, temperatures will gradually cool day
to day next week, with inland areas reaching around 0 - 5 degrees
above normal by Wednesday. Winds will remain locally driven.

&&

.AVIATION...As of 11:30 AM PDT Friday...For the 18Z TAFs. The
marine layer compressed further overnight bringing widespread LIFR
cigs, with locally higher bases near KSFO/KSJC and lower along the
central coast. The marine layer has since retreated to a few miles
onshore of the coast, encompassing KMRY/KHAF while still spreading
a FEW-SCT to KOAK/KSFO. VFR conditions are expected at most non-
coastal locations through the remainder of the day, with the
marine stratus ebbing near the coast through noon. Light to
moderate onshore winds midday, 10-16kt with gusts 16-24kt. For
tonight, the marine layer will further compress and lower another
200-500 feet, bringing IFR cigs to most terminals, with periods of
LIFR-VLIFR visbys/cigs possible 10-15Z. Earlier mix out tomorrow
with less marine depth, ie 16-17Z.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with breezy onshore winds through midday.
Forecast data indicates a return of marine stratus between 02-04Z
SUN, around BKN/OVC008-010 level, lowering to OVC005 level
overnight.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Secondary surge of marine stratus
occurred as of around 18Z and may result in lingering SCT-BKN
through early afternoon, before brief VFR returns midday. Breezy
midday onshore winds. Then, a compressed marine layer returns
between 02-03Z SUN, resulting in LIFR, then VLIFR conditions
overnight into SUN morning.

&&

.MARINE...as of 11:16 AM PDT Saturday...Moderate to locally gusty
northwest winds across the waters through most of the forecast
period. The strongest winds are forecast to develop in the
afternoons along the coastal jets south of Point Arena, Pigeon
Point, and Point Sur as well as through the Golden Gate gap.
Infrequent to occasional gale force gusts will be possible along
the Big Sur coast during the peak of these winds during the
afternoons. These winds will result in steepening northwest seas
that are hazardous for smaller vessels. Seas remain mixed with a
series of light shorter period northwest swells and a longer
period southerly swell.
