.SYNOPSIS...Warm conditions overnight with another hot day on
Friday across the Bay Area though some cooling is likely near the
coast and bays. Heat Warnings and Advisories will expire at 9 pm
Friday night. Gradual cooling trend back to more seasonal values
this weekend into early next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 10:03 PM PDT Thursday...About seven record
highs across the district with todays heat. Perhaps the most
impressive was Santa Rosa reaching 104 and breaking its old record
of 101 from 99 years ago back in 1922. In terms of extremes
Pinnacles National Park reached 111 but there were temps above 100
degrees throughout the region. The immediate coast was warm but
not hot with 67 Half Moon Bay, 79 Monterey and 80 in the City.
Heat Advisories that were up for the SF Bay shoreline and Santa
Cruz region were allowed to expire at 9 pm this evening. The North
and South Bay valleys as well as Santa Cruz mtns remain under a
Heat Advisory until 9 pm Friday with the rest of the interior
hills and valleys under the Heat Warning through 9 pm Friday.
Unrelated, shortly before 9 pm we noted a heat signature from the
emerging Willow wildfire west of Arroyo Seco in the Los Padres
National Forest. Earlier this afternoon there was a band of
convective clouds and virga but no lightning was observed in the
region today. That area will remain exceedingly warm and dry
overnight with light but switching wind directions.
Fridays forecast remains on track. We will be on the lookout for a
southerly wind reversal to develop along the Big Sur coast.
Satellite shows the marine layer lurking near Point Conception but
poised to make a northward jog up the coast on Friday. Under this
scenario the immediate Hwy 1 coastline of Big Sur would see some
cooling but more notably around Santa Cruz and Watsonville as
southerly wind flow could bring dramatic cooling. Otherwise areas
around the Bay will cool slightly. Far interior locations will see
essentially no change and may even warm. So locations east of the
680 and other interior valleys will still be well above 100
degrees, thus the excessive heat warning continues.
The marine layer will deepen along the coast Friday night and as
onshore breezes increase there will be noted relief most areas
into Saturday morning as temps gradually cool to more seasonal
values by Sunday.
A developing upper trough by Monday will bring much cooler
temperatures to the region as the marine layer deepens with
nightly drizzle and stronger onshore breezes.

.AVIATION...as of 10:31 PM PDT Thursday...For the 06z TAFs. Clear
skies and VFR conditions as winds become light overnight.
Southerly winds are expected to form along the Big Sur Coast,
drawing stratus clouds northward. But given that the current
stratus is still south of Point Conception, impacts to Central
Coast terminals is not expected at this time, but will be
monitored overnight. A brief period of reduced vis is possible
early Friday morning from a mix of smoke and haze, but still VFR
conditions expected. VFR conditions expected Friday afternoon as
winds become breezy in the afternoon. Clear skies will still be
present Friday night over the land, but the southerly surge will
move up the coast toward KHAF by Friday night. Central Coast
terminal could be impacted, but VFR elsewhere.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR and breezy. Some reduced vis 5 to 8 SM
possible early Friday morning from smoke and haze. Winds increase
in the afternoon. But as winds turn to the south over the ocean,
gusts are expected to be less than 25 knots in the afternoon, with
a more westerly component. As Friday evening approaches,
southwesterly winds are possible, but winds will diminish into the
evening. Expected stratus clouds to build up along the coast
Friday night, but not impacts to the terminal are expected at this
time.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR with light winds. The stratus clouds
over the ocean remain south of Point Conception, which reduces
confidence for the impacts of low clouds. That being said, winds
along the coast are expected to turn southerly and draw the clouds
northward, it will all depend on how fast it moves. VFR expected
Friday with afternoon breezy winds. Greater chance for low clouds
and patchy fog Saturday night as the stratus moves northward.
