.SYNOPSIS...A warming and drying trend will continue into late week
as high pressure builds over the region. Widespread 90s to triple
digit temperatures will be likely across the interior Wednesday,
Thursday and potentially into Friday. Meanwhile, onshore flow will
limit heat impacts along the coastline and around the bays. Gradual
cooling is then likely this weekend and into early next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:56 AM PDT Tuesday...One more day before the
hotter weather really kicks in. Mostly sunny skies prevail this
morning with a few patchy clouds outside of the Golden Gate and
along the San Mateo Coast. The broader view on satellite this
morning shows some upper level moisture moving into SoCal tracking
to the northwest. Not expecting much of an impact to the Bay Area
aside from some high level clouds. This moisture however could
produce a few showers/thunderstorms over the Sierra later this
week. The bigger weather story continues to be focused around
heat - for the Bay Area and the SW U.S. Forecast remains on track
and no updates are needed this morning. Wednesday will be the
first real warm up with Heat Advisories in places away from the
coast and bays. The peak of the heat is still focus on Thursday.

In addition to heat - the hot and dry conditions combined with
breezy afternoon winds will elevate fire weather concerns.
Simply put - this will be the hottest weather we've seen in a
while. People should take precautions and plan accordingly,
especially those sensitive groups and vulnerable populations.
Additionally, be fire weather aware and be one less spark.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 02:24 AM PDT Tuesday...Only seeing patchy
stratus this morning along the North Bay coastline, down the San
Francisco Peninsula, into the East Bay hills and around the
Monterey Peninsula. With this, temperatures are generally in the
lower 50s for the cooler interior valley locations with upper 50s
to lower 60s elsewhere. Expecting temperatures to generally cool a
bit more through the remainder of the morning with stratus
unlikely to make much of an inland push.
Temperatures across the interior will begin a gradual warming trend
this afternoon as high pressure over the Four Corners strengthens
and builds westward. This should result in mid 60s near the
immediate coastline, mid/upper 70s just inland and more widespread
80s across the interior. Sky conditions will also clear out by mid
morning giving way to a mostly sunny afternoon.
The ridge will build further to the north and west by Wednesday as a
mid/upper level trough over the Pacific Northwest lifts to the
north. This will result in warming 850 mb temperatures likely to
reach between 26 and 29 deg C by Thursday. Thus, look for widespread
90s to around 100-102 deg F across the interior on Wednesday as
onshore flow reduces and much drier air advects into the region.
With this, a Heat Advisory will go into effect beginning Wednesday
morning for just about all interior locations. Temperatures then
continue to warm into Thursday with the hottest inland areas
reaching between 100-108 deg F while 90s will be common away from
the ocean/bays. Thus, the Heat Advisory will be upgraded to an
Excessive Heat Warning for the North Bay Mountains, East Bay
Hills/Mountains and Interior Valleys, the Mountains of San Benito
County, the Santa Lucia Mountains and Southern Monterey County. Not
only are afternoon temperatures going to be hot, overnight
conditions in the hills/mountains will only cool into the 70s if not
lower 80s only adding to the Heat Risk across these areas. All of
this said, onshore flow is forecast to persist through this heat
event allowing for adequate relief from the heat. Temperatures here
still look to be a good 5 to 10 deg F above seasonal averages
however. The hot and dry conditions will also result in elevated
fire weather concerns as temperatures soar and relative humidity
plummets. However, the lack of stronger winds will likely prevent
widespread critical fire conditions.
Onshore flow increases a bit on Friday, yet forecast ensembles
indicate temperatures will remain well above seasonal averages
across the interior with continued risk of heat related illness.
Thus, the Heat Advisory and Excessive Heat Warning will remain in
effect through Friday evening. Temperatures look to gradually cool
this upcoming weekend as onshore flow spreads further inland and the
ridge aloft weakens. Additional cooling looks possible early next
week as the ensembles suggest the development of a trough along the
West Coast into the middle part of next week.

.AVIATION...as of 11:10 AM PDT Tuesday...For the 18z TAFs.
Satellite imagery shows mostly clear skies across the region today
while coastal and higher elevation observations indicate breezy to
gusty onshore flow. These breezy to locally gusty onshore winds
present aloft/nearshore will transition to the terminals through
the afternoon with peak gusts ranging from 16 to 32kts depending
on proximity to coastal gaps (ie, strongest at KSFO and weakest
deep inland). Backbuilding high pressure over the region will
suppress and weaken the marine layer and bring predominately
widespread VFR through the coming days. That said, patchy low
cigs are possible along the immediate Pacific coast and through
coastal gaps tonight, including FEW-SCT near the San Bruno Gap to
East Bay hills and near KMRY with local BKN/OVC near KHAF.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR today. Winds gain strength into Tuesday
afternoon, with peak winds around 23 kts and 32 kt gusts. While
winds and gusts look to reduce into the evening, expect breezy
conditions to last well into the night. Low clouds may filter
through the San Bruno gap eastward towards Oakland hills and bring
FEW-SCT briefly late overnight into sunrise Wednesday.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR, only clouds through the period will
be brief ebbs of FEW- SCT low cigs late overnight into sunrise
Tuesday near KMRY. Breezy onshore NW winds this afternoon, with
occasional gusts 15-20kt.

.MARINE...as of 10:59 AM PDT Tuesday...Northwest winds are
forecast to strengthen across the waters today, becoming moderate
and locally gusty by the afternoon. The strongest winds are
expected along the Big Sur coast south of Point Sur where gale
force gusts are forecast to develop. Occasional gale force gusts
will also be possible elsewhere across the waters late this
afternoon and evening. These winds will generate steep northwest
waves resulting in hazardous seas conditions, particularly for
smaller vessels. Winds will ease slightly on Wednesday but remain
breezy over the northern and outer waters most of the week. Seas
remain mainly wind driven with a lighter southerly swell.
