.DISCUSSION...Widespread snow continues to impact the Northern
Rockies this morning. The heaviest snow will be over Clearwater
and Idaho counties. This snow will be steadily decreasing from
the north to south throughout the day. Scattered snow showers will
persist this afternoon into the evening hours. Models are
indicating that a few of these showers could turn into snow bands
over portions of west central and southwest Montana.
Tonight an arctic airmass will slide over central Montana. Some of
this arctic air could make its way over the Divide, especially
around Glacier National Park. The arctic air could make into as
far west as Kalispell and Garrison Junction by Saturday morning.
On Saturday, another weak disturbance will make its way across the
Northern Rockies causing widespread snow. Snow will be enhanced as
it interacts with the arctic air that has made its way over the
Continental Divide. Latest solutions indicate that this
interaction will occur along and east of a line stretching from
Kalispell to MacDonald pass. The mountains along the Montana/Idaho
border will also receive a decent amount of snow from this
feature.
The arctic air makes another push westward Saturday night into
Sunday morning. The cold air appears to push into northwest
Montana and down into southwest Montana. The leading edge of this
cold air will also enhance the snow. So the combination of snow,
dramatically cold air and gusty easterly winds will create
hazardous conditions.
The front appears to stall along the I-90 corridor Sunday into
Monday. This could be the focal area for steady light snow. The
models diverge on how long this snow will persist over the
Northern Rockies into next week.
Temperature will be dramatically colder this weekend into next
week. Tuesday and Wednesday morning appear to have the coldest
temperatures as much of western Montana will be in the single
digits to below zero and north central Idaho being in the teens to
single digits.

.AVIATION...Snow will continue to impact the Northern Rockies this
morning. The snow should be tapering off at KGPI around 05/15z.
KMSO will experience a reduction in snow around 05/18z. Snow will
diminish around 05/20z for KBTM and KSMN. Snow showers and
potentially bands will be linger across southwest Montana and
Lemhi county this afternoon and evening. An arctic airmass will
move over the Continental Divide tonight around Glacier National
park. This cold air causing gusty easterly winds could impact KGPI
by 06/07z.
